How to Search Your Hotel Room for Bed Bugs
Signs of a heavy bed bug infestation on the bottom of a box springs. Image: Lou Sorkin/Flickr
Youre packed for your trip, your boarding passes are downloaded and then that little moment of terror hits. What if the hotel youre going to stay in has bed bugs? Its a real concern, but by being vigilant, you can reduce your chances of bringing home some unexpected souvenirs.
I dont put a lot of trust inonline hotel bed bug ratings or reports; infestation status can change from day to day, and there is no reliable way to verify that reviews are not fake.
Heres how I search for bed bugs when I arrive at a new hotel. I cant promise this is foolproof, but knowing how one slightly-paranoid entomologist deals with the threat of bed bugs might be useful to some readers.
Tools you will need: A flashlight, or the flashlight feature of your phone. Use your phone to take photos of anything suspicious.
What you are looking for: Bedbugs hang out near their food sourceyou. After feeding, bed bugs poop, creating tell-tale brown stains of your clotted blood. You typically wont see bugs they are fairly tiny and can scurry quickly but you will see these stains. You can find many itch-inducing photos hereto help you know what to look for.
1. Put your luggage in the bathtub when you arrive.Luggage is amajor way that bed bugs are moved from place to place. The bathroom has the fewest places for bed bugs to hide, and is the most vigorously cleaned part of a hotel room. If you actually find something suspicious in your search, you can grab your bags out of the tub and run away without risking contamination.
2. Tear the place up.Pull the bed away from the wall, if possible.Headboards fastened to the wall next to the bed are a great place for a flat little insect to stay.Shine your flashlight behind headboards and under beds.Strip the bed, right down to the mattress and bed springs to see whats underneath the sheets and mattress pad. Lift the mattress and box springs up and look underneath. If its a platform bed, inspect carefully under the springs and around the base.Pay special attention to the seams of mattresses and the box springs. These are spots the bugs like to hide in.
3. Check your sheets the next morning. When you get up the next morning, look for little blood stains or tiny rusty spots on your sheets.Reactions to bed bug bites vary widely, from no reaction at all to lots of swelling and redness. You may be one of the people that doesnt react with itching to the bed bug bites, so the presence of bites isnt always a reliable check.Typically bed bugs leave bites ingroups of threebut so do fleas, so that isnt always definitive. Dont use luggage racks, closet shelves, or drawers during your stay unless you feel confident that they are bed bug free.

SPCAP ~ Sleep Products ~ Bed bugs – North Carolina …
"Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite" is more than a quaint expression. Bed bugs, often referred to as chinches, used to be a common problem before 1950. With the widespread use of persistent insecticides, like DDT, they became rare. Current trends such as reducing pesticide use through targeting and increased travel may have inadvertently led to the resurgence of bed bugs. Reports of bed bugs have increased since the 1990s, especially in hotels, dormitories and apartments.
People are often surprised to learn that adult bed bugs can be up to a quarter of an inch long, approximately the size of an apple seed. Adult bed bugs are dark brown and have a flattened body. They hide in tight places on the mattress, box springs, bed frame and often elsewhere in the room. During feeding, as the abdomen fills with blood, it becomes dull red and more rounded. Young bed bugs look much like the adults but are smaller and may be a lighter color.
Bed bugs are night feeders, crawling out from their daytime hiding places to feed while you sleep. Each bug may bite more than once and a pattern of clustered bites or in a line is not uncommon. Bed bug bites are not currently shown to transmit diseases. The bite is usually painless but can itch and scratching can lead to a secondary infection.
Bed bugs are excellent 'hitchikers.' Small enough to remain hidden in a suitcase or clothing, they can travel from place to place quickly, setting up residence in your home or dormitory. Each female can lay a total of 200 to 500 eggs during her lifespan. Therefore, bedbug populations can increase quickly, leading to an infestation that is hard to eliminate. See "Controlling Bedbugs" for more information.
To avoid bed bugs, you can do an inspection of your sleeping area, especially when traveling. Check for bed bugs by lifting the mattress from the box spring and checking the gap for either live bugs or black spots staining the mattress which could be the remnants of digested blood. Bed bugs may also be found along seams, beading, under buttons or labels. Bed bugs may also hide behind the headboard, along the frame or in cracks or crevices of adjacent furniture. For more information, please see our Traveler's Guide.
Please be cautious when acquiring used bedding or furniture since bed bugs can live up to 12 months without food. North Carolina law requires that used bedding from a retail outlet must be professionally sanitized by a licensed sanitizer before being sold in the state. Used furniture can also harbor an infestation and should be checked completely.
If you think you have encountered bedbugs, please contact your local health department or the Sleep Products Section at (919) 733-6407. For more information, please visit:

Residents Say Hermitage Apartment Complex Infested With Bed Bugs
by Shannon Royster
HERMITAGE, Tenn. Residents in one apartment complex in Hermitage said they're being eaten alive by bed bugs and claimed they can't get management to clean up the on-going problem.
Inez Kinlaw's arms and legs are covered with bed bug bites.
"It's agony and itching all the time," she said. "I'm constantly having sores."
She said the problem is so out of control, she's had to bag up bedding and clothing. She even had to trash her bed.
"This is my second bed I've had to get rid of, so now I have to buy my third bed," said Kinlaw.
And she's not alone. NewsChannel 5 found at least two dumpsters at the Pine Brook Apartments piled with mattress after mattress and furniture. Kinlaw said she got fed up in the middle of the night.
"I woke up to being bit, and I saw the big bug it was sitting right here on my chest and I jumped up and picked up my bed and threw it in the hallway as bugs fell out of my bed," said Kinlaw.
Kinlaw said they did seek treatment.
"We've actually had somebody to come out to spray before and it hasnt helped; there's just too many of them."

Bed bug cases in NYC drop to 4-year low

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) Good news, New York. There are fewer bed bugs crawling in your sheets.
Infestations by the tiny brown critters have dropped every year for the past four years, according to new data from the housing department.
Brooklyn has the unsavory distinction of having the most bed bug violations since 2010, but all five boroughs have seen declines in confirmed bed bug cases, according to the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
Citywide, bedbug infestations were cut by nearly 53 percent from 4,808 in 2010 to 2,268 in 2013.
Housing officials credited the drop to legislation enacted in 2011 that required landlords to properly deal with infestations, and to better awareness citywide of the crawly critters.
As opposed to just a few years ago, people today are considerably more vigilant and there is more and better information available to the general public regarding how to prevent and deal with infestations, the city said in a statement releasing the new figures.
The numbers reflect confirmed infestations between fiscal year 2010 and fiscal year 2013, which ends in July.
The cases were reported in the housing departments jurisdiction, that is, homes that are being rented. The latest data does not include statistics for co-ops, condos, private homes, public housing, schools, offices, hospitals or any commercial spaces, including movie theaters.
Bed bugs are tiny insects, about the size of an apple seed, that are usually active at night. They live in cracks in furniture, floors and walls, and feed on blood.

Woman Claims To Have More Than 400 Bed Bug Bites from Local Motel
Since Jan. 1, 2014, four complaints of bedbugs have been received by the Rockingham-Harrisonburg Health Department:
ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- A woman is blaming the Economy Inn in Rockingham County, where she stayed a night, after leaving with dozens of bed bug bites on her arms.
The health department is now involved, but the owner said he has never had any bug problems.
"There was bugs all over the bed, and my blood all over the bed, little specks of blood all over the bed," explained Virginia Parrott, who travels about four months of the year for her job in the health care industry.
She paid for a week at the motel, but said one night turned into a nightmare.
"Throughout my arms, my hands and my whole torso area," continued Parrott, "I have over 400 bites on my body."
Nick Desai, the owner of the Economy Inn, said there's no evidence of bed bugs; instead he said, this is about money.
Desai provided WHSV with a tour of the room where Parrott stayed, and no bed bugs were found. Later on Monday, a health inspector examined the room and found four or five dead bugs, as well as two more in the room next door.
Desai released this statement:
