North Texas’ Bed Bug Infestation Growing At Alarming Rate

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) For years, North Texas parents have put their children to bed saying Dont let the bed bugs bite. But that phrase, meant as a joke, has become a strange reality for many across the region.

Sandy Mayberry says her short home video taken at a recent camping trip proved to be scarier than any story she heard around the campfire.

After going to sleep, she felt something biting her.

They were bed bugs, and they were coming right out of her bunk bed. Bugs in your bed is pretty scary. When theyre in your pajamas, when theyre in your clothes, and theyre biting you, and you see the blood, and when youre smacking them, its just horrifying.

Mike Merchant is an entomologist at Texas A&Ms Agrilife Research & Extension Center in North Dallas, where he studies bed bugs. They feed on human blood. Theyve figured out a strategy where they can live places near where people sleep, and get their meals at night.

Despite his knowledge of bed bugs, he says a family member recently had a run-in with bed bugs. I think whats surprising is that even people that know a little about bed bugs, most of us dont really think its going to happen to us Its not a sanitation-related pest. You can live in the cleanest house and get a bed infestation.

In his relatives case, they had as many as 300 bed bugs on their mattress, sheets, and even on the wood below the mattress.

Merchant has a dozen of his own bed bugs he keeps at his lab. When the critters get hungry, he even willingly becomes their meal ticket. Its not the most pleasant thing in the world, but for science and education. Im willing to do it.

At the lab, theyre trying to find more effective ways to make bed bugs a thing of the past. They thought they eradicated the insects 50 years ago.

But it turns out more and more people here in North Texas are having a horrifying experience with bed bugs.

Should residents pay for bed bug problem?

They said the bigger problem is management wants them to pay for treatment.

One resident showed News Channel 4 spots were she said bed bugs bit her daughter.

She three years old and they itch her all the time, the woman said. We dont sleep in our beds anymore because they are in the box-spring lining.

Tenants said they were told it would cost $300 to $500 for extermination; for some, thats close to one months rent.

Unit after unit, residents showed us where the bugs are hidden in the crevices between the carpet and walls.

Some tenants have poured powder on their mattresses trying to suffocate the bed bugs.

We contacted the Oklahoma City County Health Department.

Officials said the complex was put on notice Sept. 27 and the owners have 10 days to days to abate the problem.

A review of county records shows four complaints on file against the apartments for bed bugs, rodents and other insects.

OKC Apartment Complex Charges Residents To Exterminate Bed Bugs

OKLAHOMA CITY -

An apartment with an ongoing problem with bed bugs is now charging residents to get rid of the pesky insects.

Several people who rent at Westview tell News 9 as soon as they clean up a roach, bed bug or flea from a neighboring apartment crawls in. Therefore, the problem can't be squashed or sprayed away.

"The roaches you can tell are here, but this apartment is not totally infested, but my kids they did get bit," said Westview resident Shayla Krujac.

It's become so commonplace people at Westview apartments are creating remedies to kill the critters.

"My daughters got bit a couple times, but I put a little baby powder in the couch and saran wrapped it, they just smothered and died. But they came back a little bit," said an unidentified resident.

Several residents, many of which didn't want to be identified, say the apartment charges them to exterminate.

"I have a $1,400 mattress that I had to replace a few months ago because it is so bad. The kids get eaten alive," another unidentified resident said.

Why don't they move? Economics and Immigration.

"A lot of people don't speak English, a lot of people aren't from this country in these neighborhoods," she said. "They are not going to come fix it. When it is this severe and it is every single household in the apartment complex, that would be a mass cleaning and cost a lot of money, they are not going to pay all that money especially for apartments in the hood."

Forum looks to take bite out of bedbugs

The bad news: Bedbugs are easy to transport, hard to spot, difficult to kill and love human company.

The good news is there's help.

The Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force will host a public forum on the pests from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church, 3005 Holt Road, Grove City.

Experts will offer tips on how to identify and inspect for bedbugs and how to get rid of them.

The forum is free and open to the public, but registration is strongly recommended. To register, visit centralohiobedbugs.org.

Paul Wenning, who leads the task force, said there are common misperceptions about treatment, some of which can be ineffective or even dangerous.

"Treatment has to be done by a professional," he said.

Bug bombs or fogging simply do not work, he said, and tend to scatter the bugs to other rooms. Rubbing down surfaces with alcohol will do little to help, he said.
