REPORT: Cincinnati ranks #1 for bed bugs
CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Cincinnati maintains its position as the #1 city for bed bugs, according to a report released by Orkin on Friday.
1. Cincinnati 2. Chicago 3. Detroit 4. Denver 5. Los Angeles 6. Columbus, Ohio 7. Dallas 8. Washington, D.C. 9. New York City 10. Richmond, VA
"The changes in some cities' rankings show bed bugs continue to be a problem in most areas of the U.S.," said Orkin entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison, Ph.D. "Several of the top 50 cities have large, busy airports, and there could be a correlation between increased travel and bed bug activity. The changes could also be because the bed bug population is increasing overall, or even because the public is becoming more aware of bed bugs and has become better adept at identifying them."
Bed bugs can multiply quickly, so early detection is critical to preventing a larger infestation. And since infestations can be difficult to control, Orkin advises vacationers to take the proper precautions before enjoying spring break activities to avoid contact with and spreading the blood-suckers.
"Bed bugs can be found in other places than the bedroom," warns Dr. Harrison. "They're great hitchhikers and tend to settle where people sleep, particularly in hotel rooms, but they can also crawl into personal belongings and make their way into planes, gyms, offices, stores and worse, your home."
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, bed bugs can carry more than 30 different human pathogens, but there is no evidence that bed bugs can transmit diseases. Their bites can, however, leave itchy welts on their victims. Red marks or swelling may also develop.
"One thing that's not a factor is sanitation," said Dr. Harrison. "Be sure to do some investigating when you arrive at your hotel, whether it's a one-star or a five-star property. Bed bugs are nocturnal and resemble apple seeds in size and color, so check mattress seams, sheets and furniture, behind baseboards, electrical outlet plates and picture frames for small reddish-brown spots and lightly-colored molted bed bug skins."
When traveling, think of the acronym S.L.E.E.P. to remember the following action steps to help avoid bringing bed bugs home with you:
Orkin says their bed bug business is up 33-percent over 2010.

Bed Bug cases are declining in Cincinnati
CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Data released from the Greater Cincinnati Survey conducted by the University of Cincinnati's Institute for Policy Research demonstrates that Cincinnati residents experiencing problems with bed bugs have declined from 22 percent in 2009 to 18 percent in 2010*. Cincinnati Health Department officials point to this data as an indication that the City's aggressive outreach and education efforts are working.
These results are an encouraging sign that knowledge has been gained and applied about how to limit the spread of the pesky insects.
Beginning in 2008, the Cincinnati Health Department led an effort to assemble a consortium of organizations and experts from the City, County and State of Ohio to develop one of the first comprehensive Bed Bug Strategic Plans in the nation. Since that time many of the recommendations have been put into practice.
1) Education. Often individuals have no idea how bed bugs spread, what should be done to limit transmission, or the best ways to eradicate them. A series of brochures, fliers, videos, public service announcements and other materials have been developed and distributed to the community.
2) Outreach. The Health Department has met with and worked with schools, businesses, "big box retailers", pest control companies, local, state and federal government agencies and community groups to develop bed bug control policies and attend events to teach effective bed bud control and eradication measures.
3) Surveillance. The Cincinnati Health Department is one of the first health jurisdictions in the nation to collect hard data which illustrates the scope of bed bugs in the City. In addition the health department licenses City hotels and motels, which allows for regular inspections and a quick response to bed bug complaints.
4) Advocacy. The Health Department has worked with community partners and governments to apply for grants and lobby the EPA and other governmental entities for assistance with bed bug remediation.
Going forward it is critically important that the City continue to work in partnership with the general community, business community, and county, state and federal agencies to combat bed bugs.
"We know that we can make a difference if we work together to provide surveillance, resources and deliver accurate public messages. The City will continue to be aggressive in our response to this very difficult problem and welcome partnership and resources from other levels of government, such as the State of Ohio to assist us." Said Dr. Camille Jones Cincinnati Assistant Health Commissioner.

Cincinnati Sees Decline in Bed Bug Infestation
The city of Cincinnati may soon be losing it's not-so-desirable status as the "Bed Bug Capitol of the United States." Today, officials announced that the number of residents who are dealing with bed bugs has declined in just the past two years.
The Cincinnati Health Department says 18 percent of residents are experiencing problems with bed bugs, down from 22 percent in 2010. The Health Department believes its campaign to educate residents about the pesky bugs, which involved assembling a consortium of organization and experts from the City, County and State of Ohio, helped.
Back when "Time Magazine" published its article naming our city as the "Bed Bug Capitol", the city responded by forming the first bed bug strategic plan in the nation. A series of brochures, fliers, and videos were released and the Health Department worked with schools, businesses, "big box retailers", pest control companies, local, state and federal government agencies and community groups to develop bed bug control policies and teach effective bed bug control and eradication measures. In addition, the health department licenses Cincinnati hotels and motels, which allows for regular inspections and a quick response to bed bug complaints.
Though bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, they can be an expensive nuisance and cause substantial embarrassment and mental anguish for those experiencing an infestation. Dr. Camille Jones, Cincinnati Assistant Health Commissioner, says "We know that we can make a difference if we work together to provide surveillance, resources and deliver accurate public messages. The City will continue to be aggressive in our response to this very difficult problem and welcome partnership and resources from other levels of government, such as the State of Ohio to assist us."
