Knox hotel first in TN to lose operating license

A Farragut hotel is the first in Tennessee to have its operating license revoked. The West Plaza Inn and Suites is located off Outlet Drive in West Knox County.

The Knox County Health Department said the hotel was inspected four times in 2011. It scored below 60 each time. The state average inspection score for Tennessee hotels is 89.

Health officials said they gave the hotel owner, Jet Patel, two weeks to make changes. Patel's license was revoked after no progress was made.

Inspectors said insects were a big problem, including roaches walking on ceilings.

"When we would go in, the infestations were so bad they would fall on your head when you walked in," said Scott Bryan, Environmental Manager for the KCHD. "Most of the bedrooms we inspected had bed bugs or have had bed bug issues in the past."

Bryan named other violations like mold, unusable fire extinguishers and unusable fire alarms.

Attorney Stephen H. Byrd represents the hotel and Patel. Byrd said the hotel has been treated for insects since the last inspection.

"I feel like this hotel, as scrutinized as it's going to be, will probably be one of the cleanest hotels around here," Byrd said.

The attorney said his clients plan to fix bothhealth and building code violations and reopen late this year.

Bed bugs were sighted again in Riley Hospital for Children in Indiana. That's according to a report from Fox43.com. The website stated that this was the second bed bug case reported in the said children hospital in just a month's time.

The said second bed bug sighting was reported by Veronica Young, a mother of an 11-year-old patient. The boy was said admitted at the 9th floor of the west wing of the hospital. She claimed that after visiting her child, she and her daughter brought home the pests. The aunt of the boy also added that she had been bitten by bed bugs on her shoulder and neck when she visited her nephew.

The first bed bug case in Riley Hospital for Children happened just last February based on the report. A father of a newborn baby girl saw the pest on his arm. He brought it to the attention of the staff. Nonetheless, he added that he was told to find the bug first before any action can be taken.

Woman says apt. pest control ruining her life

DENVER - Pests in your home can be a nuisance, but one woman says the practice of getting rid of those pests in her apartment complex is turning her life upside down.

A 9NEWS viewer contacted us and says Pinnacle Real Estate Management has a contract with a pest control company that sprays every two weeks.

The woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, says she's never seen bed bugs or cockroaches in her place at in the 1400 block of Jersey Street in Denver, but every two weeks, she has to pack up her life for spraying.

"It doesn't even seem like home," she told 9NEWS, "because we're always packing up everything."

The viewer says she's been living in the building for almost a year. The previous management company sprayed every month. The new one, Pinnacle Real Estate Management, has been spraying for cockroaches and bed bugs every two weeks.

This means residents have to pack up their belongings every single time.

"Clean out every closet, floorboards of every closet, pack up the bathroom, pack up bedroom, lift up the bed, closet in the bedroom, kitchen, pack up the kitchen, every dish," she said. "Pots and pans in the kitchen, including the living room, pick up everything and pack it away in a bag and cover it."

Pinnacle Property Management refused to talk to 9NEWS on camera.

9NEWS has left a message for Best Buy Pest Control, which is the company the property management company uses to spray for bugs.

The viewer says she's had just about as much luck with both of those parties herself.

KALAMAZOO Searching for bed bugs may be something to consider while spring cleaning this year because the blood-sucking insects are not going away.

We are as busy with bed bug work this year as we were last year and actually a little bit more, said Jim Nelson, the district manager for Rose Pest Solutions. Certainly in assisted living and senior citizen homes and student housing, thats the predominant intensity for bed bugs right now.

Nelson said the company is seeing an increase in calls from single-family homes, as well.

Rollins Corp. pest-control released its 2011 list for the top 50 cities with bed bugs and the Kalamazoo/Grand Rapids/ Battle Creek region was ranked 39 in the nation. The good news: the region dropped 17 places from its ranking in the 2010 survey.

Can I get diseases from bed bugs?There are currently no known cases of disease associated with bed bug bites. Bites usually look like little red bumps, sometimes resembling mosquito bites. Most people have mild allergic reactions resulting in small, itchy welts.

How do bed bugs get into beds?They are often carried on objects and clothing. They hide in tight cracks and crevices on or near peoples beds and come out at night.

How do I get rid of them?See the Michigan Department of Community Healths website -- michigan.gov/bedbugs -- for informational pamphlets, guidance and links to a list of state licensed pest management professionals.

Detroit was ranked No. 3 for having such a high number of bed bug treatments in 2011.

The report says there has been a 33.6 percent increase in bed bug business compared to 2010.
