World, Bed Bug Registry Map – Infestation Reports

Bed bugs are some of the worst pests to exterminate. However, a recent news from dnainfo.com said that New York was winning the war against the blood-sucking pests. And in its latest post, BedBugBully.com pointed out the reason why their widespread slowed down. Additionally, the website advised to kill bed bugs naturally for the public to protective themselves from the pests safely.

According to the report, the waning of the bed bug epidemic in the city started in 2011. The bed-bug-related complaints in Manhattan particularly numbered from 2,649 in 2010 to 2,361 in 2011. That's about 11 percent decrease in bed bug cases.

The city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development also recorded a drop in called-in bed bug violations said the report. In 2010, the department issued 846 violations in Manhattan. That dropped to 649 in 2011.

However, despite the decreased in the number of bed bug cases and the eased frenzy about the pests, the city hiked up efforts to spread awareness about bed bugs, added the report. As said by Eric Bederman, spokesperson of Health Preservation and Development Department, that's the best weapon to prevent their spread.

While others say that the waning of panic over bed bugs is because people now know that they are not much of a threat as they were made out be, BedBugBully.com believed that's not it. It reckoned that the frenzy eased off mainly because the public is now more aware about the pests and how to get rid of them effectively.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) The city said Tuesday that 311 complaints about bedbugs have decreased by 12 percent since last year, but experts told 1010 WINS reporter Sonia Rincon that does not mean that the problem has gone away.

Councilwoman Gale Brewer, author of the Bedbug Bill, said that the drop is most likely attributed to New Yorkers developing a better understanding of how to deal with the bugs.

They have to work with the exterminatorto examine the apartment on adjacent sides, up and down. They have to hire an exterminator who really knows what to do, Brewer said.

Brewer told WINS that hotels, condos, co-ops and apartment tenants have become more proactive in fighting the bugs, which is important because exterminators say that the problem is far from eliminated.

I dont see much break in it at all actually, said Barry Pollack, an exterminator with New York Bed Bug Dogs.

Pollack told 1010 WINS thatover the past year the bugs have gotten more resilient.

Bedbug Complaints To The City Are Down, Problem Far From Eradicated

For those itching to find out more about bed bugs, there's a UC Davis talk that promises to provide the answers.

Tanya Drlik, integrated pest management coordinator for Contra Costa County, will speak on campus May 3 about bed bug infestations.

After a half century of life mostly without bed bugs, the tiny pests are back, said Drlik in a University of California, Davis press release.

Bed bugs infest luxury hotels, skid row apartments, hospitals, waiting rooms taxis and buses. Drilik said they have "no regard for wealth or class - everyone is vulnerable."

The insects are difficult to control due to their tiny size and growing resistance to pesticide. Rampant outbreaks of the pests are prevalent in some parts of the country, including New York City.

Drilk will give her talk as part of a Northern California Entomology Society meeting, which includes other experts speaking on various topics. The public is invited to attend after paying the annual $10 membership dues.

The meeting begins at 9:15 a.m. May 3 in the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility on Bee Biology Road.

Bed bugs are back - and UC Davis has answers

DAVIS Bed bugs may be little, but they are a big problem infestations are rampant locally, nationally and globally, says Tanya Drlik, integrated pest management (IPM) coordinator of Contra Costa County who will speak at the University of California, Davis campus at the May 3 meeting of the Northern California Entomology Society.

"We've had a reprieve from bed bugs for about 50 years, but now they're back," said Drlik, who will discuss "The Resurgence of Bed Bugs and Current Effective Control Methods" at 9:45 a.m. in the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility on Bee Biology Road.

The society-membership is open to the general public, meeting 9:15 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Drlik is one of five speakers on topics ranging from bed bugs to lacewings to endangered species.

Drlik, who formed the Bed Bug Task Force to help prepare Contra Costa County to meet the challenges of the mounting bed bug infestation, says that bed bugs "have no regard for wealth or class everyone is vulnerable. Bed bugs can be found all across the country in apartment buildings, hotels and motels, private residences, hospitals, waiting rooms, fire station, taxis and buses...and the list goes on. They've infested four-star hotels and penthouses as well as homeless shelters and rundown apartment buildings."

"Judging by history and the experience of other jurisdictions across the country, the problem is only going to increase, and more and more public buildings and homes will experience infestations," said Drlik, who has a master's degree in ecosystem management and nearly 40 years of experience in the field of IPM. "Bed bugs are difficult to control because of their small size, their secretive nature and their growing resistance to the pesticides we have at our disposal. Poverty, clutter, and poor housekeeping do not cause bed bug infestations, but they make eliminating infestations much more difficult."

Bed bugs "can be seen in epidemic proportions in some areas of the United States, including New York City and central and southwestern Ohio," said Drlik, adding that since 2004, New York City has experienced a 2,277 percent increase in complaints about bed bugs in the five boroughs (source: New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development). "Colleagues in the Franklin County Health Department in central Ohio have commented to us that they were completely unprepared for the rapidity with which bed bugs spread throughout their county."

"Bed bugs are far more common in urban areas, and the poor, the elderly, and the mentally ill suffer disproportionately because they do not have the funds, the information, and often the wherewithal, to eliminate infestations," she said.

The Nor-Cal Entomology Society agenda:

The Department of Pesticide Regulation will grant continuing education hours: two and a half hours of "laws," and an hour and a half of "other," according to Nor Cal Entomology Society president Bob Case of Concord, retired deputy agricultural commissioner from the Contra Costa County Department of Agriculture.
