Study Finds Bed Bug Foggers Worsen Problem

A study released by researchers at The Ohio State University showed foggers that claim to target bed bugs may be useless, 10TV News reported on Thursday.

The study released in the Journal of Economic Entomology said that researchers tested three major foggers available at hardware stores.

The foggers were Hot Shot, which claimed on the label to kill bedbugs, along with Spectracide and Eliminator brands.

Associate Professor of Entomology Susan Jones said that researchers found the bed bugs were not dying even when directly exposed to the chemicals.

Jones said that the foggers were shown to make the bed bug problem even worse by irritating the bug and causing them to scatter.

"So, they will get into adjacent apartments rather than stay in that one apartment. Or, rather than being in the bedroom they will move to the bathroom, the kitchen and makes the problem much worse," Jones said.

Jones said the best advice if you have a bed bug problem is to hire a licensed pest management professional.

12 On Your Side: Ga. woman battling management over bed bugs

News 12 at 6 o'clock / Thursday, June 7, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A great-grandmother is fighting with management at her apartment complex after she says bed bugs infiltrated her home.

The bed bugs are gone now inside Edna Turner's apartment, but management at Georgian Place wants her to pay up.

"Oh, I am very angry," Turner said.

Management is demanding her to pay the extermination fees involved with getting rid of the bud bugs. Turner's lease agreement does not state anywhere that she is responsible for extermination.

Georgian Place management told News 12's On Your Side that Turner is responsible for the fees because they require tenants to sign a bed bug addendum. However, they admitted Turner never signed the document since she moved in years before they implemented it.

Attorney Richard Goolsby says Georgia landlord tenant laws are a bit muddled, so it's always best for a tenant to try to resolve issues outside of court.

"We would recommend that a tenant negotiate with the landlord whenever possible," he said.

Often, court costs outweigh the time and money spent fighting a landlord tenant issue. Goolsby recommends being proactive by reading all lease documents, keeping copies of everything and asking about pest control policies before signing anything.

Turner says she is leaving Georgian Place as soon as her lease comes up in another month.

Living Space: Avoid bringing bed bugs home from vacation

A chance to relax and escape the everyday demands of work and home is a real reward, but today's vacations bring with an extra worry besides airline baggage fees: bed bugs. Once rarely seen, these blood-sucking creatures are appearing with a vengeance at the very places we go to escape - hotels and vacation rentals. But worse than finding bed bugs on vacation is bringing them home.

Do some research

Before making hotel reservations, do a quick search online to see if bed bugs have been reported at the hotel or rental you've chosen. Sites list hotels and other locations where bed bugs have been spotted.

While these sites can sometimes be in error, if you spot multiple listings and a number of bed bug sites reported within a specific area, it's possible this is a bed bug "hot spot."

To be certain you'll get a good night's sleep, also check out hotel reviews on travel websites to confirm the presence of bed bugs, or to see if there are other problems at specific hotels. Certain cities are also at a higher risk for bed bug infestations, so it helps to know which ones have had the most problems.

Oddly, even smaller, non-metropolitan cities have had problems with bed bugs. Orkin lists 50 U.S. cities ranked in order of the number of bed bug treatments performed from January to April 2011.
