Scientist at Rutgers University have created a Do it yourself bed bug trap that is designed to detect bed bugs at early stages. Instead of spending upwards of $50 on a bed bug trap, you can use this homemade trap to detect if there are bed bugs in your home.
The bed bug trap works with two specific parts. The first part of the trap is creating an irresistible odor that draws the bed bugs in. The mixture of sugar, yeast and water create a release of carbon dioxide, which is the specific chemical that bed bugs use to track down their hosts. The mixture created in the bed bug trap is a chemical lure that releases carbon dioxide, which helps draw the bed bugs out.
The second part of the trap consists of a upturned dog bowl from IKEA that is covered in surgical tape that has been dyed the color black. Bed bugs have a tendency to scale vertical surfaces and are natural attracted to the color black.
The combination of the black colored IKEA dog bowl with black surgical tape and the irresistible odor from the sugar, yeast, and water mixture will create a trap that will lure most bed bugs. This is the most effective homemade solution on the market today.
Step 1: Fill an old coffee cup with 10 tablespoons of sugar, 2 tablespoons of yeast, and 1 liters of water.
Step 2: Put this mixture into the middle of an upturned dog bowl or any kind of bowl that has slippery sides. Make sure those bowl has sides that are greased or very slippery.
Step 3: Place the trap into an area that you think might have bed bugs and wait for detection.
This homemade bed bug trap actually beat out a number of bed bug traps that were available on the market. Only a few $50 or more traps were able to attract the same amount of bed bugs as the do it yourself mixture was able to find. One of the most difficult issues that people have with bed bugs is detection. Using a quality bed bug trap helps home owners properly identify them in order to start the removal process.

The common bed bug is visible to the naked eye. Adult bed bugs are brown to reddish-brown, oval-shaped, flattened, and about 1/4 to 5/8 inch long. Their flat shape enables them to readily hide in cracks and crevices. After a blood meal, the body elongates and becomes swollen. Eggs are not known to be placed on the host's body but are found on surfaces near where the host sleeps.
Look in any place that offers darkness, isolation and protection. These bugs will often wander. Inspect adjoining rooms where an infestation is found. Even when the bed bugs themselves cannot be found, their hiding places can be located by looking for the spots of fecal material they often leave in easily visible places. Aerosols like CB-80, PT 565 or V-One have pyrethrins as an active ingredient. Pyrethrins will help flush out the bed bugs for easier inspection. These aerosols will kill on contact, but here the idea is to flush them out for inspection. Simply insert the crack and crevice tip of the aerosol in the hiding place to see if any bed bugs are flushed out.
Fecal spots and the bloody spots(looks like rust) left on sheets and pillowcases when engorged bugs are crushed serve as sure signs of infestation. Adult bed bugs are about 1/4-inch long and reddish-brown, with oval, flattened bodies. Bed bugs prefer to hide in cracks and crevices during the daytime and come out to feed on the host's blood at night, usually while the host is sleeping. Because they can flatten their bodies, they can fit in very small crevices, specially around the bed area. They are found in habitual hiding places, preferably close to a blood meal. Even though the their preference is to be close they will travel several feet for a blood meal. Initial infestations tend to be around beds, but the bugs eventually may become scattered throughout a room, occupying any crevice or protected location. They also can spread to adjacent rooms or apartments.
Look for areas close by where the bed bugs are biting. Main areas of inspection are cracks and crevices in head and foot boards and attached side railings and supports. Look for any cracks or crevices where bed bugs may crawl into to hide. If the top of the mattress has any rips , the bed bugs may hide there as well. Look also in your boxsprings, both top and bottom for any rips that might shelter these bugs.

Perhaps New Hampshires famous motto Live Free or Die will be slightly amended the state just passed a new law which means tenants and landlords may have an easier time living bed bug free.
Like other pieces of bed bug legislation were aware of, the new law, which we told you about when it was NH House Bill 482, isnt perfect. We outlined some concerns about it in that earlier story.
The New Hampshire law, which was passed in June and goes into effect January 1, 2014, stipulates that landlords have to pay for bed bug treatment initially. (This helps make sure everything happens quickly.)
However, the law allows landlords to later charge a tenant for having their own unit treated (with an installment payment plan if needed), if that tenant is considered responsible for bringing bed bugs into the building. That is fair, I think, but (as usual in these scenarios) I have some concerns about how it will be determined who is responsible.
As HB582 notes:
there shall be a rebuttable presumption that the tenant is responsible for the infestation if during the 6 months prior to the inception of the defendants tenancy, and throughout the defendants tenancy, there were no reports, to the landlord or a municipal health or housing authority, of the presence of bed bugs in the defendants unit or the dwelling units of a multiple-unit building that are adjacent to or directly above or below the defendants unit, or by previous tenants in a single-family home.
In other words, the law seems to suggest that if no other tenants report their bed bug problems, the tenant who does report bed bugs is assumed to be responsible.
This is faulty reasoning, because there are lots of possible reasons for those adjacent neighbors not to come forward and report their own problem with bed bugs.
We know for a fact that some people will have bed bugs and not notice, sometimes for a long time. More often, perhaps, some tenants will fear repercussions (not least of which, having to pay for treatment they may be unable to afford) and may stay silent. Some admit they are willing to put up with bed bugs rather than pay for treatment. And then there are the tenants who stealthily treat their own units rather than report bed bugs even though many DIY methods (like aerosols and foggers) make it more likely the bed bugs spreadto neighbors.
