Green Iowa Bed Bug Treatment – Miller Pest & Termite – Bedbugs

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A fire station in Des Moines has been dealing with bedbugs. They are usually called on to put out a blaze in a burning building, but at station number 4, firefighters had to call in for help to stamp out a little problem of their own.

"One of the firefighters found what he thought was a bedbug. He put it in a bag," said Fire Captain Steve Brown.

Firefighters brought in an expert, a bedbug dog to sniff them out. "They found them in the captain's office, two chairs, in a bedroom, four mattresses and stools in the day room," said Brown.

Firefighters work a 24-hour shift, practically living at the station, and sleeping in beds others may share on other shifts. They started using mattress covers and bagging their clothes. Firefighters were worried about bringing the bugs back into their own homes.

Firefighters said they go into all kinds of homes and recently were in one with bedbugs while on a medical call.

Rick Kozin, with the Polk County Health Department, said it's not surprising to find bed bugs anywhere, since the tiny insects are travelers.

"Wherever they can catch a ride on clothing, suitcase or furniture, they take advantage of that," said Kozin.

An exterminator treated the fire station with extreme heat to kill the bugs Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Polk County Bedbug Task Force continues to meet about once a month to try to stamp out the pesky problem.

"The number of calls at the health department -- we get about one or two a week -- has stayed steady," said Kozin. "All of us throughout the community are at some level of risk."

Caribbean Cove Hotel & Conference Center

We saw bugs everywhere. The hotel manager admitted that others have complained of this. I should have checked the site before going. I checked it when I returned home, and there are many sites claiming the same thing about the Caribbean Cove hotel. This place should be shut down for many health issues in addition to the bugs. read full report

Suburban Extended Stay N East

Hilton Indianapolis North

Ramada I-70 East Indianapolis

I stayed at the Ramada on March 15th and was supposed to be there through the 17th but left the first night. I woke up feeling very itchy around midnight and saw the bugs crawling across the sheets. From what I can find online they were fairly mature because they were easily seen. I trapped a few in a plastic bag and called the front desk to inform the staff. They did not sound concerned and simply offered to move us to a different room. We told them that we would not be staying and they agre... read full report

Bed Bug Symptoms and Other Possible Culprits | Boston Bed Bug …

For many people, the suspicion of bed bugs in the home is an anxiety-ridden experience. These people fear that a hidden infestation exists, or is growing, and that they will never be rid of the problem. These are the people who frantically call multiple pest control companies, health departments, and K-9 inspection companies. Some of these people are sold products or services they dont need and end-up disappointed, misled, and out substantial sums of money.

The truth is, anyone can determine if they have a bed bug problem. Sometimes it takes awhile, but rest assured, the bugs will make themselves known. We tell people that if we could remove all the emotion and anxiety around the bed bug issue, they would be better prepared to make informed decisions.

With all the media attention on bed bugs these days, its only natural for people to assume that their problem is bed bugs. The truth is there are lots of potential causes of lesions that appear as bites on people. When we work with clients, our first job is to determine what the problem is. Theres are many signs to look out for to determine whether bed bugs are the culprit.

There are lots of possible culprits that may cause lesions or blood stains. People bleed for many of reasonsincluding shaving, acne, re-opening of a wound, bloody noses, etc. Lesions that appear as a bite marks may be caused by (and can be confused with) rashes, scabies, or allergic reactions to medications or detergents.

The prevalence of scabies has increased in recent years. Scabies is a condition caused by a tiny and usually not directly visible parasitemite which burrows under the hosts skin, causing intense allergic itching. The itching of scabies often feels similar to the moderate or severe reaction to a mosquito bite. The symptoms are usually experienced as being worse at night, possibly because there are fewer distractions. Often the itch is also made worse by warmth, such as when bathing in warm water. Itching is a less common symptom among elderly sufferers of scabies.

In most hosts, the trails of the burrowing mites show as linear or S-shaped tracks in the skin, often accompanied by what appear as rows of small pimple-like mosquito, or insect bites. These signs are often found in crevices of the body, such as on the webs of fingers and toes, around the genital area, and under the breasts of women. Relatively thin-skinned areas of the body, such as the inner wrists and buttocks, are also preferentially infected. The mites avoid areas of skin with calluses, or thick hair. Thus, the face and scalp are rarely affected in adults. Infants infected with the parasites, however, may haveblisters and pustules on their palms and soles of their feet. Infants also may have infection of the scalp.

The onset of symptoms typically appears two to six weeks after infestation for individuals never before exposed to scabies. For those who have been previously exposed, the symptoms can appear within several days after infestation. However, it is not unknown for symptoms to appear after several months or years.

Scabies is contagious. It can be spread by scratching an infected area, thereby picking up the mites under the fingernails, or through physical contact with a scabies-infected person for a prolonged period of time. Scabies is usually transmitted by direct skin-to-skin physical contact. It can also be spread through contact with other objectssuch as clothing, bedding, furniture, or surfaces that a person infected with scabies might have come in contact wit but that is not the most common way of transmission. Scabies mites can survive without a human host for twenty-four to thirty-six hours. As with lice, scabies can be transmitted through sexual intercourse even if a condomis used, because it is transmitted from skin-to-skin at sites other than sex organs.

Dust mitesfeed on flakes of shed human skin and flourish in the stable environment of dwellings. House dust mites are a common cause of asthmaand allergic symptoms worldwide. The mites gut contains potent digestive enzymes that persist in their feces and are major inducers of allergic reactions such as wheezing. The mites exoskeleton can also contribute to allergic reactions.

The body of a house dust mite is just visible against a dark background in normal light. A typical house dust mite measures 0.4millimeters in length and .25.32 millimeters in width. Both male and female adult house dust mites are creamy blue and have a rectangular shape. House dust mites have eight legs (except for in the first stage of development, known as the first instar, which has only three pairs of legs).

Your bed bug questions answered – Dateline NBC – ‘Don’t let the …

Dini M. Miller, Ph.D., an associate professor in Urban Pest Management at Virginia Tech's Department of Entomology answered some of the questions viewers e-mailed Dateline after the report on bed bugs. Read below.

On preventing bites, hair Question: If you put on "Off" or some other insect repellant before retiring in a hotel will this prevent them from biting? Can they get in your hair? --Dolores Hill, Bessemer, Ala. Answer: Although we have not specifically tested mosquito repellants on bed bugs, we have tested repellant insecticides. Bed bugs do not seem to respond in the slightest to repellent insecticides. In fact, they will sit on top of them until they die. These results have been confirmed by the older bed bug literature (Usinger 1966) who stated that many repellant materials were applied to bed frames in an attempt to keep bed bugs from crawling up, but none had any effect. Because we have not tested repellants on skin, we cant say for sure whether bed bugs would be willing to stick their mouth parts though repellant treated skin or not. But we have found bed bugs to be very determined little creatures and I think it would be hard to stop a hungry bed bug. In addition, the repellants that you buy for mosquitoes last only a couple of hours before the effects begin to wear off. If you apply a repellant before getting into bed, a lot of the material could rub off on the sheets etc. Also, bed bugs are most active between 3 and 5 am, which is several hours after the time you would have put the on the repellant to go to bed. Bottom line, a repellant may prevent you from getting a bite or two but I do not believe that they will significantly hinder a hungry bed bug.

Bed bugs can get in your hair but the good news is that they really dont want to be there. Unlike fleas and lice that have bodies or claws that are specifically designed for navigating through hair, the common bed bug does not have these modifications. In fact, bed bugs need to set their front claws in a particular position so that they can insert their mouthparts into the skin just so, in order to be in the proper feeding position. Hair on the human head would make this very difficult. They would much prefer to feed on the bare skin. If they encountered your head first, they would most likely move to your face (many people suffer face bites) or some other less hairy area to feed. If you are bald, well, the head is fair game.

On sleep sacks Question: Would the silk sleep sacks sold as a travel accessory be any help at all against bed bug bites at a hotel? --L Hart , Irvine, Calif. Answer: Unlikely. Bed bugs can very probably feed directly through the weave of the sleep sack. Even if the bag were to offer some protection, the bed bugs could crawl to the opening of the sack and enter that way. The best defense is to inspect the bed (mattress and sheets) and the head board for signs of bed bugs. If you find any, report this to the management and request a different room.

On Lysol Question: When traveling I carry a can of Lysol spray and spray the bed with it. Is this helpful in getting rid of bed bugs? --Ennis, Tex. Answer: The only way that Lysol spray could help you is if you sprayed the bugs directly. The alcohols and propellants would probably kill bed bugs if you wetted them down with the material. However, dried spray on or around the bed would have no effect.

If you are traveling, always inspect your mattress for bed bugs by pulling back the covers and looking carefully at the seams and tufts for bed bugs or bed bug evidences (black fecal spots). If you find bed bug, dont spray them yourself. This may cause them to move around and infest other areas. Instead, contact the hotel management inform them of the bugs and ask for another room immediately. Leave the spraying to a professional.

On bed bug spray Question: Are the pesticide companies trying to develop an effective bed bug spray? --Diana Shea, Descanso, Calif. Answer: This is an excellent question. All pesticides that are labeled for use in the United States have to be registered by the EPA. To get an EPA registration, the pesticide product has to be thoroughly tested for acute and chronic effects on mammals (laboratory rats and dogs), the potential effects on birds, fish, and honeybees has to be documented, and the environmental fate (half-life) of these products in water or soil also must be quantified. The cost of having a product registered is now estimated to be around $ 100 million. This cost naturally limits the number of products that make it to the marketplace. In addition, there has been a 10 to 15 year trend in reducing the number of pesticide products that receive registration for use in the indoor environment. In short, it is very hard to get new pesticides registered that are labeled for indoor use (as opposed to agricultural use).

However, throughout this trend of limiting indoor pesticides, we were bed bug free. Like the EPA, many people have concerns about applying chemicals where children sleep or play. But, if bed bugs should become as big a problem as they were at the beginning of the 20th century, the public may demand that the federal government register products that are effective against bed bugs. We will just have to wait and see. At this time, we do not know of any product that is in development specifically for bed bug control.

Waking up with bed bugs Question: Why is it that I get bit but my husband does not? --Denise, Indian Trail, N.C. Answer: Bed bugs tend to aggregate together when they are resting. It is possible that you are on the bed bug side of the bed. Bed bugs dont switch back and forth from one host to another so if they find you first, you may be the only one bitten. It is also possible that your husband is getting bitten but does not have a significant reaction to the bed bug bites.

On where they bite Question: Will a bed bug ever bite a reproductive body part? --Tyler P., Brookfield, Conn. Answer: Yes. They do not discriminate; any body part that is accessible and with good blood flow is fair game to a bed bug.
