Identifying Bed Bug Infestations – Bed Bugs | Pesticides | US EPA

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) has long been a pest feeding on blood, causing itchy bites and generally irritating their human hosts. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) all consider bed bugs a public health pest. However, unlike most public health pests, bed bugs are not known to transmit or spread disease.

They can, however, cause other public health problems, so its important to pay close attention to preventing and controlling bed bugs.

Experts believe the recent increase in bed bugs in the United States may be due to more travel, lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices.

The good news is that there are ways to control bed bugs. Getting good, solid information is the first step in both prevention and control. While there is no chemical quick fix, there are effective strategies to control bed bugs involving both non-chemical and chemical methods.

On this page;

Bites on the skin are a poor indicator of a bed bug infestation. Bed bug bites can be misidentified, which gives the bed bugs time to spread to other areas of the house. Bed bug bites can look like bites from other insects (such as mosquitoes or spiders), rashes (such as eczema or fungal infections), or even hives. Some people do not react to bed bug bites at all.

A far more accurate way to identify a possible infestation is to look for physical signs of bed bugs. For example, spots on bedding, as described below, are one of the earliest and most accurate methods.

When cleaning, changing bedding, or staying away from home, look for:

If the room is heavily infested, you may find bed bugs in the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, in the folds of curtains, in drawer joints, in electrical receptacles and appliances, under loose wall paper and wall hangings -- even in the head of a screw. Since bed bugs are only about the width of a credit card, they can squeeze into really small hiding spots. If a crack will hold a credit card, it could hide a bed bug.

Bed bugs had long been infesting the US mainland. New York and Cincinnati are among their top city destinations. However, it seems that the blood-sucking pests have plans of taking over the world as they had also been discovered in Guam just recently.

A Guam entomologist has said that the first bed bug incident in the island happened in 2007. After that, reported bed bug cases continuously increased in the following years.

It is believed that the pests found their way to Guam through the travelers. And because they are known for a lot of not-so-good things, officials are afraid that they will scare potential tourists away. To counter that, the islands Public Healths Division of Environmental Health Supervisor seeks cooperation among various local departments and associations.

Additionally, a database of reported bed bug infestation is also on the work to get a scope of the problem about the pests. Trainings for hotel housekeepers to identify the pests are also being conducted.

=====================

Its been a major problem in large cities like New York and Cincinnati in the U.S. mainland, but now it seems the pesky problem has made its way to Guam. Some visitors to the island might have some locals losing sleep.

Sleep tight and dont let the bed bugs bite is a saying most of us are familiar with. But now the question is should island residents be sleeping tight or worrying about bed bugs biting? The parasite that feasts on human blood has made it way to Guam. Dr. Aubrey Moore is an extension entomologist at the University of Guam and said, The first incident that I know of occurred in 2007 we had one indication that bedbugs were here on island and then the year after there were a few more and the year after that a few more.

Dr. Moore says currently they are getting about one detection of bed bugs per month. Public Healths Division of Environmental Health Supervisor Rosanna Rabago says cooperation is needed to fight against a spreading infestation, saying, What we wanted to do is establish some sort of partnership amongst all the stakeholders from the University, the Cooperative Extension Services, the Guam Hotel Restaurant Association the pest control companies, Public Health, the Guam EPA, everybody has a vested interest in this in one way or the other.

Bed Bug Detection and Extermination :: Springer Home Services

Discover why Springer Bed Bug Services is the only pest control company you want to handle your bed bug infestation.

Yes, this dreaded bug has returned to Iowa cities with a vengeance. If you're in Des Moines, you may have recently heard about the yearlong battle in two downtown buildings, the Elsie Mason Manor and the Ligutti Tower. The building owners spent a year spraying chemicals and wasting countless time and money trying to rid the apartments of bed bugs. Nothing seemed to work. In the end, it was a powerful, less common technique that finally got the job done. This same method can and should be used to exterminate YOUR home or business!

Springer Bed Bug Services technicians use this natural pest control method as a safe, non-toxic solution that eradicates bed bugs using only the exclusive and 100% effective RxHeat system.

Because bed bugs in any stage of development cannot survive in temperatures above 113F, Springer's eco pest control system heats a structure's interior between 135F and 150F degrees for the relatively short time it takes to exterminate bed bugs, including those in tiny crevices.

Environmentally safe, the RxHeat process uses no chemicals, only heat, to exterminate bedbugs and their eggs. And because RxHeat can be effective in a single extermination treatment, it can be more cost effective than chemical alternatives. The beauty of this type of treatment is that it doesn't chase the bedbugs away... it actually attracts them to the heaters.

Unlike chemical solutions, heat does not have any residual effects. This allows the hotel, apartment building, or home to be inhabited immediately following the bed bug extermination treatment and cleaning. This gives the home or business owner peace of mind knowing that there will not be any toxicity issues to deal with.

Springer has earned the coveted QualityPro designation, issued by the National Pest Management Association. This leading trade organization sets the highest business practice standards for the pest control industry. Only a company that has met and maintains these strict standards - as judged by QualityPro - may call itself a QualityPro-approved service provider.

Residential & Commercial Pest Management:

If you're looking for an exterminator in Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Fort Dodge, Mason City or almost anywhere in Iowa, let Springer Bed Bug Services handle your bed bug situation and rest easy knowing that the job will be done right!
