Bed Bugs on the Camino de Santiago – Camino de Santiago Forum

This article was part of a email that I asked if I could put on the forum here. It is a very balanced article on bed bugs and how we can all help.

I am in Santiago right now, having just completed the Camino Frances from Pamplona. I stayed in a combination of albergues and hostels, pensiones, hotels. There has been, over this past month, constant talk among pilgrims about bedbug encounters. People have been hospitalized with allergic reactions, need for steroids, etc. Some have called it quits and gone home. Every group of pilgrims I met has either been bitten or knows someone who has been bitten. For the victims, and I am included among their numbers, the situation can be demoralizing.

Bedbugs ARE a part of being a pilgrim on the camino. No matter what one does, what preventatives one uses, etc. etc., bedbugs are here and encountering bedbugs is completely random---doesn?t matter what type of accommodation.

Yes, the albergues seem to have more than their fair share, but more people are staying in albergues and in closer quarters.

They are difficult to eradicate. There are definitely more bedbug encounters this year than I heard about when I walked in 2007.

Travelers need to be aware of the habits of bedbugs and what they need to do when they have been in contact.

All too many times, I heard pilgrims say things like---I was on the trail and felt something tickle me, scratched it off and it was a bedbug.

Folks, bedbugs are hitchhikers. They travel in backpacks, clothing, shoes, sleeping bags, etc. They like to hide in mattresses, between wooden floorboards, in wooden headboards. Hotels and albergues do not know to fumigate a room until someone has dropped off a few bedbugs, then the next traveler who sleeps there complains of having been bitten.

If you encounter bedbugs you need to seal everything into a plastic bag then quickly find a place where you can wash all your stuff in a washing machine at high heat and dry it in a dryer at high heat. The heat from the dryer will kill them. Don?t take your boots into the sleeping areas. Before going to bed, check the sheets and mattress---you are looking for tiny black specs and especially blood spots---meaning bedbugs have feasted on the previous occupant.

Please do not hesitate to report bedbug sightings or suspicious looking bite marks to hospitaleros, hotel, hostel, pension personnel, etc. If you don?t tell them, they cannot do anything about it. They only know to fumigate if they have been advised of a problem. I have been told that regular fumigation schedules do not help. The little critters are quite resilient and there is a concern they may develop resistance to the insecticide.

Bed Bugs – HealthLinkBC File #95

The common bed bug is a small, reddish-brown insect. Bed bugs are oval shaped with flattened bodies. The size of a bed bug is 5 to 7 mm long or 3/8 of an inch. They are usually no bigger than a lady bug.

Bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and animals to survive. Unlike some parasites, such as fleas or lice, bed bugs do not live on their hosts but only visit them to feed. Bed bugs are most active at night. A bed bug bite is similar to a mosquito bite. It is painless and may result in a small, red, itchy bump. However, many people have no reaction at all.

Bed bugs cannot fly and prefer to hide close to their hosts when not feeding. Bed bugs can live for up to a year without feeding. They can be found in homes, apartments, hotels, shelters, and student dormitories. Bed bugs can also hide on clothing or in luggage when you travel. These can be brought to places like your home or hotel.

There is no evidence that bed bugs spread disease to people. They are more of a nuisance than a health concern. However, public health officials remain concerned about bed bugs because of the possibility of secondary infections. There is a risk that you could get an infection when you scratch the area of the bite.

The reaction from the bite usually goes away within hours or days without treatment. Applying an antiseptic lotion or antibiotic cream to the area can help prevent infection and ease symptoms.

In addition to skin irritations, bed bug infestations may cause some people anxiety, stress and insomnia.

Symptoms of an infection can include:

If you have symptoms, contact your health care provider or call 8-1-1 to speak to a registered nurse.

While some people do not react at all to bed bug bites, others may have allergic reactions, such as small local skin reactions. In rare cases, some people may have severe allergic reactions.

Allergic sensitivity in a person may increase the more they are bit.

Finding bed bugs in your home has nothing to do with poor hygiene! It takes only one bed bug to hitch a ride on your clothing (furniture, suitcase, etc) and infest your residence. Whats worse is that they can live up to one year without drinking a drop of your blood (see our bed bug life cycle). Feeding takes about 10 to 15 minutes for adults and less for the nymphs; they feed about every three days. Depending on the conditions, bed bug nymphs can survive for months without feeding.

Bed Bugs are insects, more specifically, True Bugs, which have piercing mouthparts that in most species are used for feeding on plants. Unfortunately, there are some species of bugs with mouthparts that have been adapted to feed on human blood while inflicting very little pain (most never feel the blood feeding).

The eggs are white and about 1mm long. The nymphs look like adults but are smaller. Complete development from egg to adult takes from four weeks to several months depending on the temperature and amount of feed available, see the lifecycle chart on your right.

On average, females begins to lay eggs 4 days after mating and produces 260 eggs throughout their year long lifespan; eggs take 7 to 10 days to hatch. On average, bed bugs lay 5 eggs per week with populations reaching into the thousands in only 30 days!
