Home Remedies For Bed Bugs – The Best Combination

Its getting to that time of year again when we can all look forward to warmer weather, barbecues, going on vacation, spending time by the pool and BED BUGS!Yup, unfortunately as the weather gets warmer the bed bugs become more active so what can you do? Well, you could bring in exterminators or you could look to some home remedies for bed bugs.

The answer is yes, if carried out correctly they can be effective. It has to be said however, if you have a particularly large and wide spread infestation in your home you will need professional help.

Here are 6 bed bug remedies which you can use at home which wont cost thousands of dollars but do work.

1. Launder EVERYTHING Anything which may have come into contact with bed bugs so bed linen, clothing, soft furnishings, soft toys and so on should be laundered at as high temperatures as the fabrics involved will allow. Laundering will freshen and clean the items but it is the drying which is important for killing bed bug eggs etc. Therefore you should tumble dry your laundered items on a high setting. Air drying outside will not guarentee the same results even in the sun. Place all freshly laundered items in sealed plastic bags to prevent re-contamination

2. Wash and clean using disinfectant this is particularly important in your laundry area once you are done. However, dont forget work surfaces and kids toys etc. which cannot be laundered can have tiny cracks and and holes where bed bugs can hide out.

3. Get out the vacuum cleaner and Vacuum everything mattresses, box springs, headboards etc. (It makes life a lot simpler if you have completely de-cluttered the room first, disposing of any unwanted items in sealed plastic bags.) Use the tools on you vacuum to get into every nook and cranny. Dont forget the underside of furniture, chairs, drawers, inside closets, soft toys which cant be laundered as well as the more obscure places like inside alarm clocks, picture frames, just EVERYWHERE! Remember, you must empty and thoroughly clean your vacuum cleaner immediately you finish to prevent eggs hatching and bed bugs escaping to begin a whole new infestation in a different area of your home!

4. Bed bugs cannot with stand high temperatures so blasting them with a steam cleaner which can reach temperatures in excess of 120 oC will not only kill adult bugs but also nymphs and most importantly eggs. One thing to keep in mind if you are purchasing a steam cleaner is to make sure you get one which can reach high enough temperatures and which produces dry vapor. This is really important otherwise you will end up with a whole lot of soaking wet pieces of furniture which will take a long time to dry out and could end up leading to a mold or mildew problem.

It is essential that when working with a steam cleaner you carefully follow the manufacturers instructions and work slowly and methodically throughout the whole room ensuring that the tip of the steam cleaner is kept just above the surface for maximum heat. The steam pressure should not be too high otherwise it will merely blow the bugs away.

5. The use of insect crawling powder(Diatomaceous Earth) may also help in the longer term. This is fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton which under the microscope looks like tiny shards of glass. As an insect like a bed bug which has an exoskeleton wanders through a thin dusting of this on your floor etc. the powder works its way under the exoskeletal joints and cuts into their body causing them to dehydrate and die.

Bedbugs Invade New York City — What are bed bugs and how …

Tiny blood-sucking bedbugs have become an epidemic in New York City. The little pests have invaded even the cleanest and most expensive apartments in neighborhoods around New York. In fact, a councilwoman from the Upper West Side has called for a citywide bedbug task force to address the problem. What Are Bedbugs? A bedbug is a wingless, rust-colored insect about the size of an apple seed. Bedbugs are nocturnal parasites, which means they rest during the day and come out to dine on the blood of humans at night. Bedbugs are attracted by human body heat and typically favor feasting on our shoulders and arms (ewww).

During feeding, the bedbug's proboscis pierces the skin of its victim, injecting bedbug saliva (double ewww). Bedbugs typically feed for five to ten minutes at a time. As the little critter fills with blood, its colouring changes from light brown to rustred.

Experts suggest washing bedbug bites with antiseptic soap to avoid infection. The itching can be treated with calamine lotion or anaesthetic creams.

Aside from those nasty bites, other signs that bedbugs may have moved in include:

They also spread through mattresses. Reconditioned mattresses, which are refurbished old mattresses, often spread bedbugs into stores and homes. In addition, bedbugs can spread when old and new mattresses are transported in the same truck.

Experts say bedbugs have been all but dormant for decades. The recent comeback is said to be primarily the result of increased global travel, along with the banning of potent pesticides like DDT.

Here are some do-it-yourself methods you can try before you call the exterminator:

CES 2014: A Bedbug Detector that Looks Interesting but has Detractors (Video)

This is a slightly puzzling product. To begin with, Christopher Goggin, shown as the inventor of the Electronic Dog Nose (as featured in Popular Science) may not be the actual inventor, at least according to some of the comments attached to that 2011 Popular Science article. Yet other comments on the same article claim that the unit Goggin supposedly ripped off is totally different from his, and doesn't work, while his does. A report (pdf) on bed-bugs.co.uk says the device "...clearly fails to perform to the manufacturers specification and procedures." Goggin's badge at CES showed his company affiliation as Datt Solutions Group, but Datt's website did not mention him as of Jan. 21, 2013, several weeks after CES 2014 closed. A New York Real Estate blog is skeptical, as are others. Goggin also claims to have a laser device that will kill the bedbugs you find. It sounds great. But a person who prefers the tried and true to new products that may or may not work might want to use old-fashioned, all-natural Diatomaceous earth, which kills not only bedbugs but other insect pests, and costs very little compared to most other methods. If that method doesn't work, then it may be time to try dogs, lasers, and other ways to find and kill bedbugs, which have been spotted everywhere from luxury hotels to housing projects, even in taxicabs and movie theaters.

Tim: So Chris, you are holding a device in your hands that you have invented, and it detects certain chemicals. Can you talk about what it detects?

Chris: Yes, this is a molecule detector for two organic compounds and they would be 2-octanol and 2-hexanol. Those are odors that come from certain places. And this product is designed to detect those two specific organic molecules.

Tim: Okay, now those are very specific molecules indeed. Why those twoand we will give this awayand what is it to detect?

Chris: Those two organic odors are the odors that bed bugs give off. They are distinct to bed bugs and not to any other insects. And by detecting those two odors, this product can help find or root out bed bugs that are burrowed into furniture, cracks, and crevices, bedding, warm socks on your nightstand. They are very difficult and time consuming to find. They are an insect like a lot of insects that have evolved over millions of years. So they are very good, very learned at hidingthats what they do best.

Tim: I am a little hesitant to ask but how badly do you need to detect these?

Chris: Well, a bed bug can be from anywhere from a fancy high end hotel to a very low end public housing. So they can be anywhere, they could be on a bus, airplane, movie theater, taxicab. But most of the time bed bugs are the result of just poor housekeeping in one place. And they are very portable insects so their eggs can stick to clothing, shoes, pocket books, wallets without you knowing that and then unknowingly be spread to very far flung places.

Tim: I understand that there are plenty of bed bugs to go around these days.

Chris: Yeah, and they make more every day. So yeah, there are plenty of bed bugs to go around.

Tim: Now since we are at the consumer electronics show, does this have a household and individual consumer targetwho would buy a bed bug detector?
