Bed Bugs in New York A City Guide

When people think of bed bug infested cities, the first city that often comes to mind is New York. One of the reasons for this correlation is the amount of media coverage that New York has received in the past few years over bed bug infestations in apartments and hotels.

If you have ever had bed bugs in your apartment then you would realize how taboo it is to those who have never had them. People who have living with bed bugs in New York dont go around telling friends and family my apartment is full of bed bugs, unless they want to be looked at with disgust. Having bedbugs in New York is almost like being a Leper, except you dont have any visible signs.

Even with all the media attention that has brought bed bugs into the spotlight many New Yorkers view bed bugs as the bubonic plague, even knowing the fact that anyone can get bedbugs regardless of income level or the neighborhood you live in.

While bedbugs can be found in many buildings across New York, there are certain steps you can take to ensure you encounter any problems with bedbugs.

Tenants Rights

If you were living in New York 10 years ago, there would often be fights over who had to pay for bed bug infestations: the tenant or the landlord. Usually this argument arose over the chicken and the egg theory: Did the tenant bring bed bugs into the apartment or were the bed bugs there before the tenant arrived? Now people realize that one bad apartment can spoil and entire building and infest it with bed bugs. This is why the city of New York made it mandatory for the Landlords to cover all costs associated with bed bugs.

Landlords in New York have a responsibility to make sure the unit is bedbug free. They also have to let you know if any bed bugs have been found in the building within the last 12 months and what floor they were found on. This information is valuable because your unit might not have bugs, but if the unit adjacent to yours is infested, dont be surprise if they bugs decide to spread.

Traveler Tips

Before planning a trip to New York it is important that you do your homework ahead of time. Doing a quick search through the Bedbugs.net Registry will reveal an hotels that have recent reports of bed bugs in them. It is important to look for reports that are recent and have not been resolved. You should also do a quick search through tripadvisor.com to make sure you dont see any reviews that claim bed bugs at the hotel.

Bed Bugs are Biting in Hotels – BadBedbugs: Photos of …

In the 1970s and 80s bed bugs were pretty scarce because of pesticides and other older chemistry that was used to get rid of ants and cockroaches as well. The pesticides pretty much eliminated bed bugs all together, however they were still seen once in a great while. Today things are changing. Bed bugs are becoming more and more of a problem. We are constantly seeing it on the news all around the world, why is this?

In places like Mexico (a real hot bed for bed bugs!) and South America bed bugs have always been rampant. In fact theyve probably developed a resistance to some of the compounds that we use today. So the little hitchhiker bugs come home with travelers thus spreading more and more.

John Bordsen (MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS) wrote a very interesting article for the Detroit Free Press. In his article he highlights where bed bugs first came from, something Ive been interested in but havent been able to find a lot of information on. According to Bordsen human beg bugs or Cimex lectularius first became a problem when humans lived in caves, they are actually associated with bats (they both drink blood). According to research bed bugs came to America from Europe at the same time as the first settlers did.

Heres some more shocking news: research says that you really cant detect bed bugs until their population is around 200! In our FAQ we discuss the reproductive habits of a bed bug. In a room that is around 70 degrees and there are 40 bugs give it six months and there would be 5,905 bugs! So imagine not knowing until you have 200 bed bugs.

When it comes down to it the main cause of bed bugs is travel. Therefore no motel or hotel is worse than another, it all depends on if someone has been there who has bed bugs. This also means bed bugs can be found in homes, apartments, schools and businesses. So what can you do? First and foremost be cautious! Taking the time to look for bed bugs when you are on vacation or traveling can save you time, stress and money in the long run. When I say money I mean thousands of dollars! Thats how much people are spending these days to get rid of bed bugs and sometimes that doesnt even work!

For more information on bed bugs check out our FAQ section and Checklist, both found at the top of the page. This will help ensure that you will stay bed bug free!

Bedbugs: Infestations, Bedbug Bites, and Getting Rid of …

Bedbugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of animals or humans. Adult bedbugs have flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. After feeding, however, their bodies swell and are a reddish color.

Bedbugs do not fly, but they can move quickly over floors, walls, and ceilings. Female bedbugs may lay hundreds of eggs, each of which is about the size of a speck of dust, over a lifetime.

Immature bedbugs, called nymphs, shed their skins five times before reaching maturity and require a meal of blood before each shedding. Under favorable conditions the bugs can develop fully in as little as a month and produce three or more generations per year.

Although they are a nuisance, they do not transmit diseases.

Bedbugs may enter your home undetected through luggage, clothing, used beds and couches, and other items. Their flattened bodies make it possible for them to fit into tiny spaces, about the width of a credit card. Bedbugs do not have nests like ants or bees, but tend to live in groups in hiding places. Their initial hiding places are typically in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards where they have easy access to people to bite in the night.

Over time, however, they may scatter through the bedroom, moving into any crevice or protected location. They may also spread to nearby rooms or apartments.

Because bedbugs live solely on blood, having them in your home is not a sign of dirtiness. You are as likely to find them in immaculate homes and hotel rooms as in filthy ones.

Bedbugs are active mainly at night and usually bite people while they are sleeping. They feed by piercing the skin and withdrawing blood through an elongated beak. The bugs feed from three to 10 minutes to become engorged and then crawl away unnoticed.

Most bedbug bites are painless at first, but later turn into itchy welts. Unlike flea bites that are mainly around the ankles, bedbug bites are on any area of skin exposed while sleeping. Also, the bites do not have a red spot in the center like flea bites do.

Forest Park Senior Housing Takes a Hit from Bed Bugs; My Cleaning Products Recommends a Pesticide-exempt Spray to Kill …

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 13, 2014

Bed bugs were discovered in a senior housing in Clayton County, Georgia. And to help others with the same problem, My Cleaning Products recommended a bed bug spray that could kill bed bugs effectively without the help of chemical ingredients.

A report from cbsatlanta.com dated February 04, 2014 stated that the affected senior apartment complex is at the county's Forest Park. It related that one of its tenants, Shirley McCoy, confirmed the presence of the critters stating that they invaded her mattress, thus, causing her to endure sleeping on her couch.

Nonetheless the report relayed that the housing's regional property manager, Kay Davis, said they immediately took action once the problem was known. However, when asked about the trashed furniture of the residents during the treatment, she stated that they would not provide replacements, it shared.

Here is a part of the post Bed Bugs Infest Clayton County Senior Housing by My Cleaning Products.

Bed bugs pulled a number on the seniors of Clayton County in Georgia. And as anyone dealing with those critters would want, the elders voiced out they would like them wiped out.

The tiny vampire-like pests particularly plagued the county's Governor's Terrace, an elderly housing in Forest Park. However, the management said that only a few of its rooms were affected.

MCP commented that, "The infestation of bed bugs at housing complexes such as that in Forest Park isn't surprising anymore because those critters are so prevalent these days that they have even become common in unexpected places."

But whether their presence is surprising or not, bed bugs must be promptly eliminated, said My Cleaning Products. As it pointed out, the reason is that they multiply and spread fast.

However, besides being prompt, it added that the bed bug elimination must also be effective and safe to avoid bigger problems and spending. And to get that done, it advised the use of Bed Bug Bully the pesticide-exempt bed bug product.
