Bed bug problem plaguing downtown Montgomery apartments

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Bed bugs continue to invade a Montgomery apartment complex and residents say they're fed up. WSFA received reports of residents at the Jefferson Davis Apartments suffering from bleeding sores on their arms and legsafter being attacked by bed bugs in their sleep. Now, tenants and the property management are speaking out about the pervasive infestation.

Harthus Barber says the tiny critters have invaded his bed and his life.

"The bed begs keep coming back. They would go away for 2-3 weeks when they would sprayand come right back. And as they came back, they would come back in droves. You would have maybe 3 or 4 bed bugs in your room and next thing you know, you have 15, 20 just crawling around and they come out at night. And that's the problem. You get attacked at night," he told WSFA.

Residents say it's a problem that's has been plaguing the downtown complex on Montgomery Street for severalyears.

"There's a lady that just left today. She's been here probably 15-20 years. And there's several people in the past 2-3 months that have been moving out on account of the bed bugs," added residentRichard Gilliland."It's a very horrible situation."

Their bites have left Barber, Gillilandand other tenants with itchy, painful sores and scars.

"You begin to feel a burning sensation and you start itching and scratching. Sometimes you scratch so hard that you will have a blister on your arm," Barber said.

"Some of the people have sores on them. I have scars on my arms where they've bit me," Gilliland added.

Several residents have even taken the property management to court over the bed bug infestation and litigation is ongoing.

Rise of Bed Bugs Prompts Emergency Meeting in Cincinnati, My Cleaning Products Offers Help to Residents With Tips and …

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) February 25, 2014

The cases of bed bugs in Ohio kept on rising. And to remedy it, Cincinnati's state representative called for an emergency meeting, said a report from thecincinnatiherald.com dated February 24, 2014. Meanwhile, reaching out to the residents, My Cleaning Products gave out complimentary Bed Bug Bully, its pesticide-exempt bed bug spray.

In the report, State Representative Dale Mallory (D-Cincinnati) particularly called for a meeting of the Joint Bed Bug Task Force. It was scheduled on February 27, 2014 at 5 p.m. at Theodore M. Berry Center, 880 West Court St., Cincinnati.

According to the news post, the agenda of the meeting would be the measures needed to be taken to solve the worsening bed bug problem in Ohio. However, it added that besides the officials and the member of the task force, pest control companies are also welcome to join.

Here is an excerpt from the report Bed Bugs Spur Emergency Meeting by My Cleaning Products.

It can't be denied. Bed bugs are now so prevalent. The worse part is, they are not done yet. They continue to spread causing havoc in any place they infest. And with Cincinnati among those cities becoming a favorite spot of them, State Representative Dale Mallory (D-Cincinnati) thought something must be done to control their presence, hence, the call for a meeting.

Actually, in the past few years, a number of cities in Ohio have already been on the annual top ten most-infested ranking. Cincinnati and Columbus are particularly two of those cities that have been on the list for a number of consecutive years. Needless to say, that's very alarming.

MCP stated that the fact bed bugs are still spreading despite them being already so prevalent should be taken by the people as a warning. That is warning to take preventive measures and ready themselves to kill bed bugs promptly.

As it said, that's because those critters could bring in bed bug bites that could swell and itch for days. Moreover, it cited that they could require a professional bed bug treatment, which could cause a huge spending, if not eliminated early.

However, when getting rid of bed bugs promptly, MCP said not to use chemical-based sprays. It stated that could harm the people's health, even the environment, with their content.

Experts Predict Increase in Bed Bug Cases for 2014

CHICAGO, Dec. 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --There's one thing on which top entomologists agree: The current bed bug infestation has not yet reached its peak in the U.S.

According to experts, the current surge in U.S. bed bug infestations began around 2004, but didn't hit the national news until 2010, when multi-unit dwellings began to experience issues with the pesky bugs. Data from the 2013 Bugs without Borders Survey by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) confirmed that 98 percent of pest management professionals encountered a bed bug infestation during the past 12 months in an apartment or condominium, up from 90 percent in 2011.

"Bed bugs have been a hot topic in the news during the past several years; especially when a new geographical area is infested or bed bugs are discovered in public places such as hotels or shopping centers," said Dini Miller, Ph. D., Department of Entomology at Virginia Tech. "Unfortunately, people have become desensitized to the issue, leading them to believe the risk has decreased, but the issue is actually greater than before."

Pest control companies and businesses that sell products to prevent or control bed bugs echo the observation that the war against bed bugs is probably not going away any time soon.

"Since 2010, sales of mattress and box spring encasements have continued to increase each year," said James Bell, CEO of Protect-A-Bed. "Every major pest control company in the United States buys our products, which they sell to individuals fighting a bed bug infestation. The demand for product has certainly not slowed down."

Bugs without Boarders survey respondents reported an increase in bed bug infestations at a variety of public places, including schools, day care centers, hospitals, libraries and on public transportation. Based on these reports, top entomologists also agree on several other emerging trends.

People with bed bug issues tend to experience unnecessary anxiety
