PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) - They hide in your mattress - and feed on your blood, we're talking about bed bugs.
Hotels are one of the most common places you can pick them up and with so many people traveling this weekend - you really need to watch out. There's a new way to find those bugs that's being used right here on the Grand Strand.
Dogs are called man's best friend for a reason. Detector dogs, can be a fast and easy way to sniff out bed bugs.
Yaro, is a detector dog and a bed bug expert. It takes the canine less than five minutes to sniff bed bugs in a motel room, a process that can take a human, several hours.
"It's more efficient, time wise, and they're actually finding the bug, where humans we have to go out and look, take off light sockets, pull the furniture apart," says Russell Goodale with Merrill's Detector Dog Services. "It's just more of a detailed search for us to do, versus the dog picking up the scent."
Merrill's Detector Dog Services say the easiest way for humans to pick up the bugs is to follow the dark tracks they leave behind. Look for dark feces, or blood smeared on sheets; but the most efficient way to find the pests is scent- which is where the trained dogs come into play.
Think about it, the faster we find the bugs, the less chance they have to multiply.
While they're not proven to cause disease, they eat your blood; this can lead to a rash, loss in sleep, or even eat at your wallet.
"They multiply rapidly and you get to the point where you're gonna have to get an exterminator coming in to get rid of them, it could cost you into the thousands of dollars," says Goodale.

Detector Dogs: the fast way to find bed bugs
GAINESVILLE, Fla., May 22 (UPI) --Surveys suggest bedbugs are everywhere, and they're becoming resistant to pesticide treatments -- treatments that cost upwards of several thousand dollars.
Luckily, for itchy victims of the bedbug epidemic, researchers at the University of Florida have developed a way to make effective bedbug traps using household items. Each trap can be assembled for less than $1.
If you have two disposable plastic containers, masking tape and glue lying around the house, you can make a make bedbug trap, easy. The traps can be used to collect the biting insects as they commute from their hiding spots to their dinner (sleeping people).
"This concept of trapping works for places where people sleep and need to be protected at those locations," said Phil Koehler, an urban entomology professor at Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
The traps, Koehler explains, take advantage of bedbugs' inability to climb on smooth surfaces. Enticed by rough materials and lots of traction on their way to their midnight snack, the bedbugs enter easily before sliding into a smooth-surfaced moat. There they remain, trapped -- unable to regain their footing.
Here -- courtesy of a University of Florida press release -- are the instructions for a do-it-yourself bedbug trap:
1. Cut four pieces of rough-surfaced tape. Each piece should be at least as long as the wall of the smaller container is tall.
2. Evenly space and firmly press the four pieces of tape vertically on the inside surface of the smaller container. The tape allows the bugs to escape the small container easily and fall into the space between the small and the large container walls, where they are trapped.
3. Wrap tape around the exterior of the larger container from the base to its upper edge so the bedbugs can enter the trap easily.
4. Glue the smaller container onto the center of the bottom of the larger container.

Florida researchers develop DIY bedbug trap

The contraption seems so simple, yet so clever, like something The Professor might have concocted on "Gilligan's Island."
Researchers at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences have devised a bedbug trap that can be built with household items. All you need are two disposable plastic containers, masking tape and glue, said Phil Koehler, UF/IFAS urban entomology professor. The traps catch and collect the bugs when they try to travel between people and the places where bedbugs hide, he said.
"This concept of trapping works for places where people sleep and need to be protected at those locations," Koehler said.
The traps rely on the bugs' poor ability to climb on smooth surfaces, he said. Instead, the traps have rough areas to let bedbugs enter easily, and a smooth-surfaced moat that keeps them from escaping.

The traps work best if you apply talc, including baby powder, to the space between the small and large container walls to make it harder for the bugs to escape. Many people use incorrect methods to treat bedbugs. Koehler advises against using flammable liquids, mothballs, treating mattresses with pesticides and using bug bombs.
Koehler said the bedbug device is pretty foolproof and effective.
"It's really hard to mess this up to the point that you'd hurt anything," he said.
