KETV.com in Omaha reports on Angie Rempe, whos been living with bed bugs for eight months.

By the time we found out what they were, they had totally coated the seams of the mattresses, said Rempe.

She now finds bed bugs in the baseboards, closets and in cracks in the ceiling of her apartment.

The article mentions the fact that the landlord and tenant are at odds as to who is responsible for paying to get rid of the bed bugs.

Although the landlord and tenant in this case are working together, its a reminder that we need clearer laws in many places. Landlords may not want to foot the cost of bed bug treatment, but leaving it up to tenants (as is the case some places) means the problem may spread to others, and surely bring the propertys value down while it persists.

Rempe and her exterminator got advice from Barb Ogg of the University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension Office:

Ogg said licensed exterminators must use insecticide every few weeks until inspections no longer reveal evidence of living bugs.

Tiny brown spots in patches on the wall indicate bed bug droppings, a tell-tale sign of a possible infestation. You cant just come in and spray the baseboards and leave, Ogg said.Ogg instructed property managers of Rempes apartment to have exterminators drill holes in the ceiling to insert the pesticide, and then caulk the holes and plug up any cracks and crevices where the bugs might live.Rempe said exterminators have completed two treatments in recent weeks and she isnt seeing as much bug activity as she had in the past. She said exterminators also treated the vacant apartments that share walls with her unit.

One lesson here is that if you live somewhere where bed bugs are less common at this time, contacting local authorities (like health or housing inspectors) and university experts (accessible via extension offices at universities) can help. Even if they have not seen bed bugs before, they should be able to network with colleagues elsewhere who have.

Hawaii Exterminator Says Bedbugs Becoming An Epidemic …

By Diane Ako

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite. It's been an old saying for decades, but lately, it's taken on new meaning. Bedbugs are becoming a big problem in Hawaii and across the country.

Terminix exterminator Carlton Agena says the bugs are not discriminating. "I've seen it at apartment buildings, 4 star hotels in Waikiki. I've seen it on all islands. Luxury homes. Youth hostels."

A bedbug is the size of an apple seed. In a mattress, it's very small. And it's a creating a big problem in the US. Agena says, "I would call it more an epidemic."

If you get bites or see stains on your furniture, you've got them. "You need to get a pest professional. You don't want to take care of this problem yourself," warns Agena.

Here's what you can do, according to Agena: "Get the bedding off the bed and put it in a plastic bag. And get it out of the house. Use the dryer. 100 degrees plus will kill the bugs."

With a little vigilance, you can keep your home safe from this nasty pest.

More information from Terminix about bedbugs:

What is a bedbug?

Bed bugs are small insects that lurk in the crevices of mattresses, box springs and furniture. They emerge at night to feed on the blood of their sleeping victims. While their bites are generally painless, they can leave behind red, itchy welts similar to a mosquito bite.

Researchers compare efficacy of 'natural' bed bug pesticides

1 hour ago Credit: hoto by Alexander Wild. alexanderwild.com

Concerns over human-insecticide exposure has stimulated the development of alternative bed bug control materials, and many essential oil-based pesticides and detergent insecticides have been developed in recent years. But how well do they work? To find out, researchers from Rutgers University evaluated the efficacy of nine essential oil-based products and two detergents that are labeled and marketed for bed bug control. The results are published in an article in the Journal of Economic Entomology.

The non-synthetic bed bug pesticideswhich contain ingredients such as geraniol, rosemary oil, mint oil, cinnamon oil, peppermint oil, eugenol, clove oil, lemongrass oil, sodium lauryl sulfate, 2-Phenethyl propionate, potassium sorbate, and sodium chlorideincluded the following products:

When the researchers sprayed the 11 non-synthetic pesticides directly on bed bug nymphs, they found that only twoEcoRaider (1% geraniol, 1% cedar extract, and 2% sodium lauryl sulfate) and Bed Bug Patrol (0.003% clove oil, 1% peppermint oil, and 1.3% sodium lauryl sulfate)killed more than 90 percent of them. None of the non-synthetic insecticides had any noticeable effect against bed bug eggs except for EcoRaider, which killed 87 percent of them.

While these lab results may seem promising, the effectiveness of both products is probably much lower in actual settings because it is extremely difficult to spray any product directly on bed bugs because of their ability to hide in tiny cracks and crevices.

"Under field conditions, bed bugs hide in cracks, crevices, creases, and many other places where insecticide application may not be directly applied onto the hidden insects," the authors wrote. "Additional studies under field conditions are warranted to determine the field efficacy of EcoRaider and Bed Bug Patrol and how they can be incorporated into a bed bug management program."

Curiously, some of the active ingredients in EcoRaider and Bed Bug Patrol are also found in some of the other tested products that exhibited very low rates of efficacy, an indication that the products' inactive ingredients are also important.

"Other factors besides the active ingredients must have accounted for the high efficacy of some essential oil-based pesticides," the authors wrote. "Adjuvants such as wetting agents, spreaders, stabilizers, defoamers, stickers, and solvents may produce synergistic effects to essential oils by improving penetration through insect cuticle and translocation of the active ingredients within insect body."

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) City officials discoveredbed bugs in Portsmouths 911 Communication Center.

The infestation on the second floor was foundThursday, and emergency services will move River Shore Road Fire Station at 4 a.m. Oct. 15. 911 dispatchers are expected to be back at 307 County Street the next day.

DOCUMENT: Bed bugs action chart

Officials said they are holding off on ridding the building of the bugs because [They]are Hitchhikers meaning they cling to clothesand personal belongings and are carried from one place to another by humans, saidDennis Bagley, director of general services for Portsmouth. We must take a series of preliminary steps prior to treatment to ensure that our eradication efforts are successful. Secondly, we need time to plan for an orderly transfer of 911 lines from one location to the other to make certain we maintain our 911 lines without interruption.

All employees will receive sealed plastic containers to place personal items in the containers while at work.

We are trying to balance the need to eradicate these pests swiftly with the importance of maintaining our 911 operation without any interruption, Bagley wrote in an email.
