Bed Bugs Wont Give You Chagas Disease (probably)

Nobody likes bed bugs, but one thing we could always say was at least they donttransmit any human diseases! Thats still true, althoughsome research published this week is causing some concern.

A new paper in The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene reportedthat bed bugs mightbe able to host and transmit Chagas Disease, a chronicheart disease caused by the blood parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. That sounds scary, but the experts I talked to all agree no one should panic.

A lot of alarmingthingscan be found inbed bugs; over 45different potential human disease agentsare known, including bacteria, viruses (Hepatitis B), worms, and protozoans (like the trypanosomes in the new paper). So far, none of themare transmitted to humans bybed bugs. This new research doesnt change that.

Heres a run-down of the new research, and what you need to know.

In areas where Chagas Disease occurs, you get infectedwhen akissing bugwith the parasite in its gut first bites you, and then poops into the wound it makes. Seriously.

Kissing bugs are a relative of bed bugs, and they both feed the same way they stick a beaky straw into your skin and slurp up your blood.Kissing bugs poop after they feed, and if the bug is infected, it releases the parasite onto yourskin.

Breaks in the skin (like the one the bug just made to drink your blood) or mucus membranes allow the Chagas parasite easy access to your blood.Kissing bugs get their name from their habit of biting near the lips and eyes. Which are mucus membranes.

Scratching makes it more likely that you get the disease, because you create an opening in the skin and then rub the feces into the wound. Insult, meet injury.

To recap: the bug bites you on the face; then poops on your face; and then you scratch the wound (on your face? Did I mention its on your face?) and infect yourself.

How do these kissing bugs get infected in the first place? They feed on small mammals and pick up the Chagas parasite. There is anothersource of Chagas disease infection in kissing bugs:coprophagy. Literally: shit-eating.

Monroe Countys bedbug problem is far from over, experts …

Home News Monroe Countys bedbug problem is far from over, experts and survey agree February 8, 2012 Bloomington, Indiana --

HeraldTimesOnline.com

By Christy Mullins

MORE: Read the MCCSC bedbug draft plan and find more info about bedbugs and a Q&A with IU entomology professor and bedbug expert Marc Lame.

On the southwest side of Bloomington is a house that is so infested with bedbugs, the 85-year-old woman who lives there is anemic from their bites, people assisting her say.

Black streaks of bedbug feces descend like mold from every wall and dot every newspaper she has collected inside. Even the mail outside has bedbugs crawling on it. So does the front door. Her furniture and counter tops are encrusted with black stains. Bedbugs jump from the couch to her coat, and she brushes them off like flies, if she has any reaction at all.

The woman would not be interviewed for this story, but bedbug professionals across Monroe County have visited the house and they all say the same thing. It is the worst case of infestation theyve seen in the area, maybe ever.

It is tragically bad, said Carol Cobine, whose professional bedbug sniffing dog has detected millions of bugs and eggs in the womans house in Broadview.

I cant overstate how bad it is. ... Wall to wall, floor to ceiling, every item in this womans house has evidence of bedbug feces. I am just, literally, not kidding. In the kitchen. On the curtains. The sad part is, this woman has no money for remediation.

It will cost $8,300 for a pest control company out of Evansville to fumigate the house, which requires pitching a tent over the entire property for two days and gassing the bugs out.

Bedbugs Could Spread Deadly, Heart-Damaging Chagas Disease

CDC A bed bug (Cimex lectularius)

It was previously thought that Chagas disease, which kills an estimated 50,000 people per year, was exclusively carried by an insect called the kissing bug. But new research shows that bedbugs can also spread the disease, at least among mice.

University of Pennsylvania epidemiologist Michael Levy says hes worried that bedbugs could distribute the parasitic disease among people, although there is no proof yet that this is happening.

Chagas disease is caused by a parasitic protozoan called Trypanosoma cruzi that slowly attacks internal organs like the heart. At first, it has very few outward signs. Then, about 20 years after infection, some 20 percent of infected people develop very serious problems, including arrhythmias and even sudden death from cardiac arrest, Levy tells Newsweek.

Due to this time lag and lack of recognition, Chagas disease has become a silent epidemicits the most deadly parasite in the Americas, but the public doesnt know anything about it, Levy says.

The parasite is spread by kissing (or assassin) bugs, which generally feed at night and go for uncovered areas like the face, often around the eyes or lips. These insects dont directly spread the disease through their bite, but rather through feces; the protozoan can be transmitted when their waste is spread into wounds via scratching, or by entering the body through the eyes or mouth, Levy says.

Luckily, kissing bugs cannot generally get to humans at night if they live in well-made buildings. Thats one reason why Chagas disease transmission isnt a significant problem in the U.S.the few cases seen in the States are mostly brought in by travelers returning from Latin America.

In the past few years, however, bedbug populations have skyrocketed in the U.S. If these insects could spread the disease, and, says Levy, it would be a disaster. If Chagas starts to spread, we wouldn't know it, due to the slow nature of the disease.

In a studypublished this week in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, researchers showed that bedbugs can become infected after feeding on diseased mice. They also found in another experiment that protozoa-carrying bedbugs can pass on the parasite to mice.

Since the protozoa infects many mammals, including mice and humans, theres no reason to think bedbugs couldnt spread the disease among people too, Levy says, although he concedes there may be some as-yet-unknown reason why bedbugs couldnt transmit the disease.
