Bed bugs infest Avenue Living apartment block, Saskatoon …

Tenants in apartment buildings across Saskatchewan say aCalgary-based company isn't doing enough to address bedbug infestations and other maintenance issues.

The tenant of a west-side apartment block said the building was infested with bed bugs.

A Saskatoon tenant is speaking out about the condition of the apartment block, owned byAvenue Living, that she lives in. She doesn't want to be identified for fear of getting evicted.

She saidher apartment building is infested with bedbugs.

"Oh my Lord, gross," she said. "I couldn't sleep I was so stressed and all I dreamt about was bugs."

Last summer, she foundinsects in her bedroom and got bit.

She saidshe's repeatedly asked Avenue Living to have the complex exterminated. Nothing has been done, she said.

Other tenants in the building face similar problems with insects. Several current and former Avenue Living tenants across the province are venting online about a lack of maintenance at some of the company's 74 apartment buildings in Saskatchewan.

She said she has been trying for nine months to get Avenue Living to get rid of bed bugs in her Saskatoon apartment.

Bed bugs found in Clifton City Hall

CLIFTON Bed bugs were discovered in three separate areas of City Hall earlier this month.

City Manager Dominick Villano said the wingless, reddish brown parasitic insects were identified by Clifton Health Department inspectors on Nov. 12 after a City Hall employee observed an adult bed bug fall on his desk, landing on its back.

"We identified [bed bugs] in three departments, one of which being the courtroom," Villano said. "We did a whole sweep of the entire City Hall and went into every office in the building."

The bed bug nests were found on chairs with cloth material backs as well as underneath the wooden benches inside council chambers, Villano said.

Officials could not say for sure how the bugs made it into City Hall, but sources said it is likely they were carried in via a person's coat or clothing. Bed bugs are attracted to cloth items and, due to the winter weather, visitors to City Hall are wearing jackets and layered clothing.

The municipality hired an extermination company which utilized a dog to sniff out the location of live bed bugs and bed bug eggs on Nov. 13, officials said. The following day, the company sprayed nitrogen sulfur which freezes and kills bed bugs.

Villano said the spray treatment has been "very efficient", particularly compared to chemical sprays which were used in the past. A follow-up screening of Clifton's governmental offices by the company's canine did not reveal any existing bed bugs, he said.

Villano said the City plans to conduct a second spray treatment on Dec. 12.

The bed bugs feed entirely on blood and prefer that of humans. Although they are not nocturnal, the insects are most active at night when their hosts are most likely sleeping or still. When bed bugs bite they inject an anesthetic that prevents a person from feeling the bite as well as an anticoagulant that thins the blood, City health officials said.

Health experts generally believe bed bugs do not carry diseases. City health officials said itchy bites, skin rashes and allergic symptoms are typical health effects related to bed bugs. The bites, similar to that of a mosquito's or flea's, typically heal within a few days.

How to Get Rid Of Bed Bugs | Edmonton Apartment Association

The Edmonton Apartment Association (EAA) is working closely with the Edmonton Bed Bug Stakeholder Committee, Alberta Health and EAA members to monitor and better understand the recent resurgence of bed bugs in Edmonton and throughout North America.

EAA is aware that many Edmonton Apartment Association members are experiencing infestations of bed bugs as they spread throughout the City of Edmonton, including but limited to office and commercial space, hotels, hospitals, public areas, shelters, housing, etc.

EAA recognizes that bed bugs are not associated with unsanitary living conditions in rental properties but rather are primarily spread as a result of:

EAA is of the view that education is key in addressing the problem of bed bugs. EAA continues to encourage its members to educate themselves and their residents on bed bug recognition, prevention and elimination.

EAA believes that prevention and elimination of bed bugs is a cohesive partnership among EAA members, residents and all levels of government. EAA members should therefore encourage non-punitive reporting of infestations and joint cooperation in any treatment process to ensure effective results.

EAA wishes to see members and their residents comply with treatment recommendations and protocol to prevent and eliminate bed bugs by including regular suite monitoring for bed bugs and initiating professional pest control treatment to eliminate bed bug populations.

EAA is working to ensure that our members have access to the latest information on effective bed bug control treatments, tools and procedures through closely monitoring research as it becomes available, participating in bed bug information sharing initiatives and educating our membership through seminars, symposiums, handout materials, website and articles in the EAA Rental Gazette Newsletters.
