The Best Weapon to Trap and Kill Bed Bugs Is Hidden in Our Blood

Bed bug infestations are a nightmare. The tiny, assholish insects can resist all sorts of measures to kill them completely. Drawn-out infestations are a scourge, but also fairly common in big cities like New York. There are plenty of remedies, from all-natural bean leaves to special heated suitcases, but none are foolproof. One new weapon looks like the most useful tool to fight bed bugs, though. And it uses something found within our blood.

Researchers have identified a chemical blend that lures bed bugs with a 100 percent success rate. The secret ingredient? Histamine, the thing our white blood cells release in an auto-immune response. Histamine is also one of the reasons your skin looks inflamed and irritated after bites from bed bugs, so this is an especially appropriate way to murder those fiendish mattress devils.

Pheromones, the chemicals animals release to communicate, are used to trap all sorts of bugs, including moths, stink bugs, and flies. Scientists have known that bed bugs could be trapped using pheromones for a while now, but they couldn't figure out the final component for a concoction that'd be irresistible to the pests. After 35 experiments, researchers at Simon Fraser team finally found out that histamine was the missing ingredient.

The complete bed bug-killing mix contains dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, (E)-2-hexenal, (E)-2-octenal, and 2-hexanone. These are known as "volatile" components, and they are what attracts bed bugs of all stages of development. The histamine is what makes the bugs stay in the trap.

According to Wired, traps with this new blend are expected to be available in late 2015. While there's always the chance that bed bugs will mutate until they become immune to the immobilizing effects of the histamine, for now, this is a hopeful development in the Great Human War on Bed Bugs. Even if a product can be used to control all bed bugs in a room or a facility, unless that product leaves lasting control, reinfestation is a distinct possibility.

Any products sold and advertised to control bed bugs must comply with federal and state regulations. Home remedy recipes are largely ineffective and may be dangerous. For example, mixing a few household chemicals together as someone might read online, might control bed bugs but it can also be very dangerous. Products used in the US must be registered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and in Canada, they must be registered by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA). Certain products are exempt but beware of any product which does not have a regulatory agency statement that it is registered. Smart consumers should make sure that if the product claims to be exempt from regulation, that the claim is true.

Many bed bug sprays can be found in pressurized cans or in bottles with a pump spray head. EPA and PMRA registered products are effective but users must strictly comply with label requirements as to when and where the product may be used. If the product does not permit use on mattresses, for example, then the product may not be used on mattresses.

Consumers should carefully consider all options, select the control method which is best for their lifestyle and values, and always understand that any product used must be done with extreme care and the user should have knowledge of the biology and control methods for bed bugs.

Residents speak out about bed bug infestation

Amarillo, TX - Residents staying at a halfway house in Amarillo said there is a bed bug infestation but they cannot legally leave.

The Amarillo Transitional Treatment Center is a place for parolees and those on probation to stay while they finish treatment for addiction.

One resident said she is thankful for the service but has had enough when it comes to the pesky bugs. "I'm so eaten up with bed bugs that it is not conducive to my health or my safety to stay there," said Nicole Patrick. She left the center this morning and is now violating her parole to get away from the bugs. "I wasn't supposed to leave the halfway house, but I had to make an executive decision for my own health and safety. I informed them where I was going, where I would be and contact numbers so that I wouldn't get in trouble, but I'm pretty sure they're still going to mark me as absconding.

Patrick has bug bites across her face, legs and arms. She said staff at the center have taken some steps to eliminate the bed bugs, but nothing is working. "They sprayed, they've done heat treatments, they have us wipe down our beds and take our mattresses outside and spray them with bleach, wipe our beds with bleach, but every day I'm still waking up with bed bug bites."

Another resident still living at the center said she has been battling the bugs since August. On-site staff declined to comment about a potential bed bug problem and the CEO of the center who lives in Lubbock said he is unaware that there is any issue at all. He said if there was a bed bug infestation, his staff would do all the necessary treatments to fix the problem.

However, Patrick disagrees. "They've known about this problem for quite some time and I feel like the procedure to get rid of them fully, they're not wanting to do and it's like putting a band-aid on a hemorrhage."

Patrick said she is working with her parole officer and hopes they can make a different living arrangement so she won't violate her parole.

Bedbug bait and trap invented by Simon Fraser University …

After 180,000 bedbug bites and eight years of study, Simon Fraser University scientists say they have invented a new kind of bedbug bait and trap.

The trap, which will be available commercially next year, will workby emittinga set of chemical attractants, or pheromones, that lure the bedbugs into traps, and keep them there.

BiologistRegineGriesdiscovered the pheromonesafter acting as a hostfor more than a thousand bedbugsduring the research, which also involvedher husband, biology professorGerhardGries, SFUchemistRobertBrittonand a team of students.

"The biggest challenge in dealing with bedbugs is to detect the infestation at an early stage," saidGerhard Gries in a newsrelease on Monday.

"This trap will help landlords, tenants, and pest-control professionals determine whether premises have a bedbug problem, so that they can treat it quickly. It will also be useful for monitoring the treatments effectiveness."

RegineGriesendured 180,000 bites from the team'sbedbug colony as part of the research, the release said, because she is immune to the bites, getting only a slight rash instead of the usual itching and swelling most people suffer.

Bedbugs are wingless pests that feed on humans as their preferred source of blood. The small, flat insects were all but wiped out after the Second World War but have returned with a vengeanceto Canadian homes, hotels and shelters.

The insects will bite all over a human body, favouring the face, neck, upper torso, arms and hands. Theycan go for weeks or months without feeding, depending on the temperature.

The Gries research began eight years ago, when theyinitially isolated a pheromone mix that attracted bedbugs in lab experiments, but not in bedbug-infested apartments.
