Bed Bug Report for Hilton Garden Inn Washington DC …

Hilton Garden Inn Washington DC Downtown 815 14th St Nw Washington, DC 20005-3301

At Hilton garden in Washington I was bitten in multiple places may 3 2013 in room 404

Eric on 05/27/2012

I spent two nights in this hotel, 5/23-25/12, in room 201. I noticed 3 red bites in a line, typical of bed bugs, later in the day that we left.

Belly button bedbug bite on 09/02/2011

We checked into the Hilton Garden Inn, 815 14th Street N.W. Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Aug. 27,2011. My wife awoke on Monday, Aug. 29th with slightly raised, elevated red bumps on her abdomen, just above the umbilicus. They itched intensely, and the lesions remained throughout our stay, through Thursday, Septe. 1, 2011, and are still present as I write this on Sept.2. We reported this to the manager, Brian Reymann, after first looking up the bed bug registry on Google and finding that this ho

tel had been reported on 7 prior occasions. We notified the manager who we later spoke with, and we were required to move rooms at a great inconvenience. The manager had an "independent" inspector go over the room the next day, and the manager gave me a copy of a report stating that the room was not affected by bed bugs. I personally think this was a white wash, and do not believe the report, since my wife went to bed without the lesions and woke up with the lesions. I have compared these with photographes of the lesions on other web sites and they are identical. The manager compensated us for one night's room, when I feel that he should have compensated us for two nights. He also gave us a nice bottle of wine on the eve of our final night. We intend to see a doctor, but the Labor Day week-end makes a visit difficult until next week.

kill bed bugs – The New Way to Kill Bedbugs | Rodale News

If you're dealing with a bedbug infestation but you don't want to bomb your home with nasty chemicals (that might not work anyway), you've got a new option. Researchers from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, have discovered a new, safe weapon against bedbugs that is a total game changer: A bedbug trap based on pheromones.

"This trap will help landlords, tenants, and pest-control professionals determine whether premises have a bedbug problem, so that they can treat it quickly," says Gerhard Gries, PhD, study author and professor of Animal Communication Ecology at Simon Fraser University. "It will also be useful for monitoring the treatment's effectiveness."

What's astonishing is the researchers' dedication to the cause. Gerhard's wife and fellow researcher, Regine Gries, MSc, used her own arms every week for five years to feed over a thousand bedbugs so that they could continue their research. Regine was the host because she is surprisingly immune to the bites and only suffers from a slight rash rather than the insane itching and swelling that most people face.

(This writer personally had an encounter with bed bugs. Let's just say the bedbugs won.)

Bedbug infestation is a serious concern, as these nasty biters are found everywhere including low-income housing, five-star hotels, movie theaters, libraries, and public transportation.

The researchers are currently working with Contech Enterprises Inc. to develop effective and affordable traps and infestation monitoring kits to be commercially available by next year. Contech is a Canada-based company that makes environmentally-friendly garden and agriculture products, such as insect lures and nontoxic animal repellants.

While the researchers develop a home product, Regine will continue to be buffet for the crawlers. "I'm not too thrilled about this," admits Regine, "but knowing how much this technology will benefit so many people, it's all worth it.

Researchers have finally discovered an effective way to exterminate bedbugs

If youve ever suffered through a bedbug infestation, you know firsthand just how difficult it is to get rid of them. Bug bombs and foggers are largely ineffective, so aside from pulling your mattress into the street and burning it in your neighbors driveway, theres not much you can really do to banish the little bloodsucking bastards from your bedroom.

But theres hope on the horizon. Biologists Regine and Gerhard Gries have been studying bedbugs for past fiveyears sometimes even offering themselves up as guinea pigs in a quest to build a more effective remedy. Now, as explained in a recently published study in the chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie, they believe theyve discovered a working technique.

Instead of using a fog or aerosolized spray of some sort (which have been proven to be ineffective), the duo have developed an ingenious two-part chemical trap. First, the bugs are lured our of their hiding places with a special mixture of pheromones. Once theyre out in the open, theyre hit with a very specific histamine that acts as a kind of knockout drug for bedbugs, causing arrestment on contact. It doesnt kill the bugs but causes them to seize up and freeze in place, making them much easier to remove.

Unfortunately the researchers havent yet figured out how to transform this technique into a treatment that you can buy at your local drugstore, but their discovery is still a huge step forward in the battle against bedbugs. For now well just have to wait patiently, and hopefully well have Bedbug-Be-Gone at our disposal by the end of 2015. Fingers crossed!

A Better Bedbug Trap

After years of study (and thousands of bites), researchers may have discovered how to get the bloodsucking pests under control.

Over-the-counter bedbug treatments, as a 2012 study discovered, are effectively worthless. Most of the time, they fail to reach the bugs, which are burrowed deep in the folds of mattresses and rugsand even when they do, many of the bloodsuckers have built up an immunity to common household insecticides.

So whats a person to do in the face of an infestation? Call an exterminator. Freak out. Fight, or give into, the urge to set fire to all belongings.

For the past five years, though, Regine Gries has done none of these things; instead, she has welcomed the bedbugsthousands of themonto her skin for a blood feast.

Gries, a biologist at Simon Fraser University in Canada, has endured 18,000 bug bites in the quest to build a more effective bedbug remedyand as she and a team of researchers explain in a paper recently published in the chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie, they believe theyve finally discovered the chemicals that will allow them to do just that.

Bed-Bug Madness: The Psychological Toll of the Blood Suckers

Bedbugs were considered more or less a non-problem through much of the later 20th century, kept at bay with strong pesticides. In recent years, though, bedbug infestationsand, consequently, bedbug hysteriahave made a comeback. (Scientists have also discovered that the bugs may carry the parasite that causes Chagas disease, though they have yet to study their ability to spread the disease itself.)

To study the blood-suckers, Gries and her husband Gerhard, also a biologist at Simon Fraser, collected the feces and other material the bugs left after each blood meal. (Gries was chosen as guinea pig because, unlike most people, she developed only a small, itch-free rash in response to the bites.) The couple was able to successfully isolate a blend of pheromones that attracted the bedbugs, but only in the labwhen they tested the chemical in infested apartments, it had no effect.

Together with Robert Britton, a chemist at Simon Fraser, the researchers tried to figure out what their cocktail was missing. Eventually, they discovered that histaminethe same substance used in human immune responsesacted as a kind of knockout for bedbugs, causing arrestment on contact regardless of when theyd last eaten. Together with five pheromones that the team had isolated, they were able to create a two-part chemical trap, first luring the bugs and then freezing them in place.

As the researchers work to turn their discovery into a marketable tool, though, the research continuesmeaning the bedbugs stay alive, and stay hungry. Im not too thrilled about this, Gries said in a statement.

Right now, theres only one surefire way to know if youve got bed bugs and it itches like crazy. By the time you notice the lines of red, itching, burning bites, the bugs could have been multiplying in your mattress for days or even weeks. But researchers in Canada have a plan to catch the critters early and make it easier to stop an infestation from spreading.

The Country is Crawling with Blood Suckers. Find Out Whos the Worst

A team of biologists and chemists at Simon Fraser University have identified for the first time a chemical scent that will lure bed bugs out of furniture and into traps. They published their research on the attractive pheromones in the chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie.

The biggest challenge in dealing with bed bugs is to detect the infestation at an early stage, said Gerhard Gries, one of the biologists who has spent years on the project. This trap will help landlords, tenants, and pest-control professionals determine whether premises have a bed bug problem, so that they can treat it quickly. It will also be useful for monitoring the treatments effectiveness.

Dont Let These Bloodsuckers Get You!

Bed bugs were largely eradicated ages ago, but in the last decade they have reemerged in plague-like proportions around the world. Cities across the U.S. have seen infestations in homes, hotels, movie theaters and designer stores.

And once youve got bed bugs, theyre very hard to get rid of but very easy to pass around.
