New Bed Bug Survey Shows Problem is Not Waning; Bed Bug …

NPMA Staff

Monday, April 15, 2013

FAIRFAX Va. - The new 2013 Bugs Without Borders Survey conducted by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and the University of Kentucky, found that bed bug infestations in the United States continue at high rates and the pest is as much, if not more of a problem than in years past. The survey of U.S. pest management professionals, found that 99.6 percent of respondents encountered bed bug infestations in the past year and that infestations have increased in the majority of locations in which pest professionals typically treat for bed bugs. The study is being released during Bed Bug Awareness Week (April 22 through 26), a national observance by NPMA and Chases Book of Lists to help spread public awareness about bed bugs and what people can do to help curb infestations.

This is the third survey from NPMA and the University of Kentucky which tracks the bed bug problem since the resurgence of the pest began in earnest about three years ago. The previous survey was conducted in 2011.

According to the survey, bed bugs are overwhelmingly found in private residences including apartments, condominiums and single-family homes and the incidence of infestations in these environments is slightly higher compared to the 2011 findings.

These results clearly show that there is still much work to be done in the fight against bed bugs, said Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. As Americans prepare for summer travel, enroll their children in summer camps and college students return home, we hope that these survey findings and Bed Bug Awareness Week observances will remind the public that bed bugs are still very much a problem and that with education and vigilance we can work together to decrease the easy spread of bed bugs.

Below are the top five findings from the 2013 Bugs Without Borders Survey:

1. Nearly all (99.6 percent) pest professionals have treated bed bugs in the past year, slightly higher than the 99 percent that reported the same in 2011.

2. The majority of bed bug infestations occur in residential settings, such as apartments/condominiums and single-family homes, with 98 percent and 96 percent of respondents treating these dwellings respectively. Two years ago, about nine out of ten respondents reported treating infestations in these settings.

School expects to find out today if bed bugs are back

School expects to find out today if bed bugs are back

Friday, February 13, 2015 4:05 AM EST

Titusville Herald

Ehrlich Pest Control returned to Main Street Elementary School on Thursday, at 3:30 p.m., to inspect the school's bathrooms after the discovery of a bed bug infestation in late January.

The infested bathrooms were treated Feb. 2.

Titusville Area School District Superintendent Karen Jez said Thursday night that she will receive a report from Ehrlich this morning, regarding the results of Thursday's inspection.

In a previous statement, Jez said that, in the event bed bugs are rediscovered, the district will repeat the pest control process, including having Ehrlich return for follow-up treatment and bagging personal belongings.

The process, Jez described, is the same as when lice are found at a school.

After the discovery of the bed bug infestation, most likely caused by the pests riding to school on a student, Jez posted a letter to the district's website, gorockets.org, advising parents to inspect their homes.

Bed Bug Report for Rosen Center Hotel, Orlando, FL

Lee on 01/07/2015

Found one bedbug in the morning on1/1/2015. Killed it with blood all over the tissue. Manager said they would call the pest control and changed the room for us.

Anonymous on 10/05/2013

i stayed here three nights this week for the ANCC conference. I have about 10 bed bug bites that have shown up (so far), Beware!

Anonymous on 12/29/2012

Spent nine nights at the hotel in December 2012. Noticed two bites during our stay and wasn't concerned. We came back home, unpacked everything and the next day, I found 12 bites on me, realized they were bed bug bites and called the hotel. They said they would let the current guests in the room check out and then send an inspector in to check the room and get back to me by this coming weekend. However, one day later (today), we are noticing my husband's back full of bites and a bunch on his ar

ms as well. I can write again once I get their response, but think it's good for guests of the hotel to be able to see this report.

Woke up on July 6 to find several bed bugs under my pillow. I reported this to the front desk and spoke to the manager before checking out. He later called and confirmed the infestation. He also sent me a two night stay voucher for a future stay which I thought was very nice. The bug bites did not really appear for a couple of days but have been horrible this last week.

Do it yourself: How to control, fight and kill bed bugs

I got rid of mine by doing what I describe below.

WARNING :: WARNING :: WARNING Do NOT follow my advice if you have small children, pets or respiratory conditions such as asthma!

Following my advice will cost you less than $20. But it's not me you have to pay your money to. Although I wouldn't mind a donation if this web page helped you to got rid of your bed bugs.

You probably need to buy items from home improvement stores (in Canada you'll find stores like Home Depot, Rona, Canadian Tire. Here some stores in the US...). It will take about a month until so see real improvement, so please be patient. You should also only follow my advice if you have no pets. People with respiratory conditions such as asthma might also want to not try this.

Otherwise: Do it yourself and get rid of the infestation - be your own pest control.

You cannot usually see where bed bugs hide. That is the main problem. Although you can see bed bugs themselves (they come in sizes like an apple seed or smaller and dark, but younger bugs are yellow-ish, almost transparent and very small and thus not easily visible with the naked eye. They know well where to hide. They usually come out at night when you sleep and suck blood out of you, which you usually won't notice. Then they hide again. Even if you wake up they will notice it and run off, even alerting others to also flee. Out of reach again. They are attracted by CO2 emissions by the breath of humans or animals.

According to Wikipedia bedbugs can tolerate temperatures above of 112F(44C) and below 6.8F(-14C). Hot water steam applied to parts of your bed might kill off most or even all of them. Freezing is supposed to only help if you can expose items you suspect bed bugs in to the extreme cold for several days.

Bed bugs are no risk to your health, unless you develop symptoms against the bites. That is because they usually stay with the same host. That is you.

Bedbug nest with eggs

I was about to call an exterminator. But that would have been costly. Plus since other apartments in the building had bed bugs too the PCO had to also clear those. And although it might be the duty of the landlord to deal with this (payment, making appointments...) he seemed to not care. So I thought to first try DIY to fight the bed bugs myself.

Bed Bugs! According to HUD, Normally The Landlord’s …

A March 15, 2011 memorandum from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Chicago Region suggests that responsibility for bed bug treatment lies with the landlord. Highlights of the March 15, 2011 memo include the following:

Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers and can be transported to your home from literally any place and by anyone that has been in contact with the pest.

Bed bugs can be introduced to a property by simply hitchhiking on the clothing or belongings of residents or visitors.

Bed bugs could be introduced to a property by the landlord, landlords employees, maintenance personnel, contractors, vendors, government representatives, or anyone who has or had access to a property.

No one is immune from transporting these pests from one location to another.

Bed bugs are not linked to poor sanitation or poor housekeeping.

It is virtually impossible to prove fault with regard to who may have created the bed bug infestation within a property.

Residents should not bear the sole burden regarding the introduction of bed bugs to a property.

Landlord polices should be reasonable and should not penalize tenants because they discovered and reported bed bugs within their unit.

When tenants report that they have bed bugs in their unit, landlords first should inspect the unit and confirm that the pest is in fact bed bugs, and if so, should immediately begin to treat the problem.
