How long can bed bugs live without blood? The answer depends on the age of the bed bug, if it is resistant to certain pesticides and the temperature range it is exposed to. How long can bed bugs live without feeding before becoming adults? is the first question to ask yourself.

A newly hatched bed bug is called a nymph. Nymphs go through five stages before becoming mature adults. When a bug molts, it sheds its skin. Immature bed bugs molt five times before reaching maturity and must feed in between every molt. For that reason, nymphs must feed more often. Despite their young age, newly hatched bed bugs can still survive for at least a few weeks without feeding.

But if nymphs can survive weeks without feeding, how long can bed bugs live without blood after maturity? That depends. When living in warm conditions, bed bugs will usually try to feed at regular intervals. Adult bed bugs can survive for about five months without a blood meal.

Once the bed bug settles on a host, it will feed for a few minutes. Length of feeding depends on the stage of development, how much it ate last time and how long its been since it last fed. After the bed bug is full, it will leave the host and return to a crack or crevice, typically where other bed bugs are gathered.

Bed bugs usually feed every three to seven days, which means that most of the population is in the digesting state, and not feeding much of the time. However, because bed bug infestations can spread so rapidly, it can often feel like you are waking up with new bites every morning. This can lead to high stress levels and a lack of sleep.

Bed bugs are most active in the middle of the night, but when hungry, they will venture out during the day to seek a host. Bed bugs tend to hide in cracks and crevices around the room and in bed frames, mattresses and box springs. Clutter around the room offers additional hiding places and increases the difficulty of eliminating bed bugs once they have become established.

You may see the bed bugs themselves, small bloodstains from crushed insects, or dark spots from their droppings.

Because many other kinds of small brown bugs may be discovered, it is critical to ensure that the bugs are correctly identified. It is often hard to see them because they hide in or near bed cracks, folds and creases in the bed linens, and seams of mattresses and box springs. They may also be found in pleats of curtains, beneath loose areas of wallpaper near the bed, in corners of desks and dressers, in wicker furniture, in laundry or other items on the floor or around the room.

How do I get rid of them? If you are a homeowner, you may want to consider using a licensed pest management professional who is knowledgeable and experienced in managing bed bug infestations. The Chester County Health Department recommends that homeowners hire a pest control professional licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to evaluate what type of pest is present, and to handle insecticides.

You may also consider taking the following steps to eliminate bed bugs:

Landlords and property owners have specific obligations to provide safe and livable accommodations for tenants. Tenants have an obligation to cooperate with owners and landlords. This includes preparing the apartment so that the pest management professional can easily inspect the rooms and treat if necessary. It is illegal for pesticide applications to be performed by an unlicensed person.

Where does the Chester County Health Department fit in? The Chester County Health Department has housing regulations that deal with the extermination of insects and rodents in rental properties. This applies to bedbug infestations in rooming houses and in two or more units in a multi-unit rental property. In these situations, the property owner or landlord is responsible for the treatment to eliminate the bedbugs.

These regulations do not apply to owner-occupied dwellings or to single-dwelling rental units. The regulations also do not apply for an individual unit in a multi-unit dwelling if it is the only one infested with bedbugs. The occupant is responsible for treatment in these settings. If you are not sure what type of rental unit applies to you, please refer to the definitions found in our regulations.

While any resident can be affected by bed bugs, the greatest impact is often felt by people with the least resources to deal with the problem, which can take a lot of time and money.

The City of Columbus is part of the Central Ohio Bed Bug Task. It includes local governments, health departments, social service agencies, pest control applicators, landlord and tenants rights groups, fire departments, the Ohio Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Health, and the Ohio State University Extension. Bed bugs cannot be seen with the naked eye. False. Bed bugs are small but can be seen with the naked eye. A magnifying glass will help. Young bed bugs are about the size of a poppy seed and mature ones are about the size of an apple seed.

If I see bite marks I have bed bugs. False. Other insect bites may resemble that of bed bugs. Presence of live bed bugs or their eggs will confirm their infestation in an area.

If you have bed bugs you need to get rid of infested clothing and furniture. False. Clothing can be laundered to get rid of bed bugs. In most cases furniture can be treated and should only be discarded if there are no acceptable treatments that can rid them of bed bugs.
