Bed Bug News Reports Bed Bugs in California

The BedBugNewsReports.com pages are here, so you can learn from the mistakes of others and this new story from Chico California is a sad example. Its just that latest in a long line of charity housing / shelters with BedBugs that are making changes, in attempts to win the BedBug Wars.

Im General BedBug, Commanding Officer of the BedBug Resistance Army and battle consultant to FLfresh.com and , EcoBugFREE, the BedBug Eliminator. You can follow my war-room briefings to see how the battles move from city to city. I am @GeneralBedbug on the Twitty-Toy and I do postings like this one on MrBedBugs YouTube Account @ MrBedbug TV.

Lets see what we can learn from the decisions and actions of the Torres Shelter.

They are on the front lines of the Bedbug Wars, not because of the low-income or homeless population they serve, but because BedBugs are hitch-hikers. They cling to any fabric that smells like a tasty-human all-you-can-eat-buffet. The sad fact is the transient population all across the country are at high risk for Bedbug infestation, because they have no stable home-base.

Most homeowners and apartment renters have some security, that if they protect the home-base, that they will have stability. Thats not true with transient populations, who return time after time to the same locations, to come into contact with Bedbugs over and over.

What we can learn here is that awareness and the inspection program has greatly reduced to likelihood of a Bedbug infestation returning to the shelter property. These very same awareness steps can be done by every homeowner. Your kids []

Bed Bugs: Everyone is vulnerable – WDRB 41 Louisville News

By: Jennifer Baileys - Jbaileys@Fox41.com

They feed on your blood without you even knowing. Bed bugs are taking over hotels and homes across the country. The problem in Kentucky and surrounding areas is described as out of control.

"A lot of people do not even realize they have a problem for quite a while," said Darren Bowman with Perfection Pest Control. Most of the time victims are sleeping tight while bed bugs bite, sucking the blood of any human or animal nearby.

"There's nothing really on the horizon that's going to be the silver bullet to get rid of them," Bowman said.Infestations are happening all over the United States. Investigators say the epidemic is out of control in Kentucky and the surrounding areas."Some people say we're somewhere between third and fifth in the nation for the bed bug problem," said Bowman.

Proof the problem is growing at a rapid rate can be found in history. Not long ago, bed bugs were unheard of in the United States. The top entomologist in the world, University of Kentucky Professor Michael Potter says the small brownish insects are efficient hitchhikers transported in or on luggage, clothing, beds, furniture, and other items.

"First seven years or so never one bed bug call, now it is primarily what I do for a living," saysBowman. Hehas been an exterminator for ten years. He says the strain of bed bug in Cincinnati and Kentuckyis resistant to pesticides, but he has a secret weapon even these little pests can't hide from: "I have been working with Betty for little over a year now."

Bowman's schnauzer Betty is not just any pet. He says she is Kentucky's first and currently the only bed bug sniffing dog.Betty may be man's best friend, but she is a bed bug's worst enemy. She is trained to pick up the bug's scent even if it is in the middle of a mattress or in the cushions of a couch."She gets paid exactly what she wants, and that's food."

Betty is proof of the epidemic. Until recently, dogs were rarely used in pest control. Now Betty's job takes her to places where our four-legged friends wouldn't normally be allowed to go."A doctor's waiting room, we do treatments and inspections for five star hotels and I've treated and inspected million dollar homes."

Bowman says he's not sure exactly what iscausing the outbreak of bed bugs, but he believes humans have helped the pests multiply."A lot of international travel, a lot of resistance being built up to pesticides that we have to apply."Adult bed bugs are not microscopic and are visible to thenaked eye. The insects can live up to a year and a half without eating.

"You will eventually start to notice blood smears on your sheets, you may get a skin reaction to the bites or you may start to see the insects when they start to build in population," Bowman says. And he points out thatbed bugs are fighters, even survivingpesticides, bleach, and other household cleaners.

"Really the only thing we recommend a homeowner use on their own is rubbing alcohol." Bowman recommends diluting rubbing alcohol with about 40% water, then spray the solution directly onto the bed bugs.If that doesn't work, callan expert.

"We pretty much have to treat any crack or crevice that we think that we would find a bed bug in," Bowman said. If you want to avoid the problem altogether, do your own inspection on every vacation."I usually recommend to remove the headboard from the wall, just lift it straight up and pull it back look behind there and you'll want to check behind like the braided edges of the mattress and the bed skirt is another good place to look,"Bowman said.

Bed Bugs – Boulder County, Colorado

Bed bug infestations are increasing in the United States and internationally. Bed bugs are small (adults are no more than inch in length), wingless insects that feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals. They can fill themselves with blood in less than 15 minutes and can lay between 1-5 eggs daily. Bed bug eggs hatch in about 10 days.

Bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, but repeated bites may cause an allergic reaction to the saliva and continued scratching of the bite sites can cause an infection. Bite marks typically occur on the skin of the upper torso in groups of three.

The brochure above provides all the information needed to prevent and get rid of bed bugs, including:

Populations of bed bugs are increasingly becoming insecticide resistant because of the widely ineffective use of pesticides to treat dwellings. In some cases chemical treatments are used when there is not a bed bug problem.

A 2010 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study found that an increases in bed bug populations is causing bed bugs to become resistant to commonly available insecticides and might cause increased misuse of pesticides. Between 2003 and 2010 there were 111 cases of serious acute illness associated with the misuse of pesticides used to treat for bed bugs.

Many people have started pesticide treatments who later found they do not have bed bugs. Look for:

Identify the bug yourself by placing them on white background and using a magnifying glass to compare them to one of the following:

An expert can examine the specimen and notify you of the bugs identification.

Successful eradication of bed bugs in a home requires non-chemical as well as chemical insecticides treatments to be fully effective.

Use insecticide in all areas where bed bugs are present such as crevices in rooms, walls, and furniture especially bedroom furniture. Ensure pesticide directly contacts the bed bugs during application - use low volume but higher pressure application nozzles for crevices.

Bed bugs live in cracks and crevices such as:

Bed bugs can survive with food for one year so multiple inspections and non-chemical and directed chemical treatments needed to eliminate them. Any effective control measure for bed bugs requires support from all residents in affected buildings and ongoing monitoring for infestation from other housing units. When hiring a pest control professional, make sure:

Nonchemical methods to control bed bugs include:

Experts recommend using pesticide treatments and all of the non-chemical practices to effectively eliminate bed bugs from your home. Professional pest control companies will know the safest types of chemicals to use and the safest methods to apply them and how to apply them directly on the bugs.

A bed bug elimination service agreement should be specifically for bed bugs, or include an addendum to a standard service agreement that addresses specific bed bug issues, and should include:

Many service agreement issues are unique to bed bug service (difficult pest to control, probability of re-infestation, need for cooperation, etc.).

Boulder County Public Health does not mediate tenant/landlord issues. Mediation is available through the following organizations:

Does Bleach Kill Bed Bugs ? | SNIFF K9s

Does bleach kill bed bugs? Sure. Is it the smartest solution? Probably not. Bleach is a multi-purpose disinfectant and sanitizer. Adding water to bleach and spreading it along bed bug hot spots such as baseboards and other possible bed bug hovels will deter bed bugs and possibly kill any that come in contact with the chemical mixture. However, there are more practical solutions out there.

There are more ways in which bleach can be harmful to your lungs and skin than ways in which it can be useful for killing bed bugs. While direct contact with the chemical is deadly to the bugs, bleaching your furniture may harm the fabric and your familys health. Dishwashing soap can also be mixed with water and applied to cracks and crevices where bed bugs may be hiding. But just like with bleach, you wouldnt want it on your furniture, much less where you sleep.

A safer, powder-based approach is diatomaceous earth. Food grade DE is non-toxic and is even fed in small quantities to farm animals to ward off parasites. The majority of DE is made of silica, the same material that makes up glass. Carefully laid out DE is akin to scattered, ultra-sharp shards of glass through which bed bugs walk and can get fatal lacerations.

The downside to this is that laying out DE is a somewhat meticulous, time-consuming process best left to those knowledgeable about the substance. Piling on DE against your baseboards and on your furniture will simply make bed bugs avoid the large pile of razor-sharp particles. If, however, it is applied carefully and in select quantities to key locations, including your mattress, DE can be a useful mitigation agent. It will also be far safer to breathe in (in small quantities) than bleach or dishwashing soap.

So, does bleach kill bed bugs? Yes. A bleach mixture, if laid out in all the areas where bed bugs might be hiding, will certainly kill off some bed bugs. However, that much bleach will most likely be detrimental to the air you breathe. DE, on the other hand, is a healthier and equally effective bed bug killing agent.

Be aware, though, that both substances only mitigate a bed bug problem. More proactive measures have to be taken: washing clothes, steaming furniture, sealing items, and ultimately, a complete solution like a full-on heat treatment. According to Sniff K9s FAQ page, bed bugs cannot withstand temperatures of 122 degrees Fahrenheit or more.

While food grade DE and bleach do work at deterring and killing individual bed bugs, only a complete bed bug solution, like a professional heat treatment, can guarantee the extermination of all bed bugs in a home. Remember: Only one egg is required to start an infestation, so eradicating a handful of bed bugs simply wont solve the problem of an infestation. If you are unsure whether you have bed bugs or the level of the infestation present, its best to call a professional for an inspection.
