"Bed bugs" (specifically Cimex lectularius) are dark brown, very small insects that typically hide in small cracks and crevices during the day (including a mattress, box spring, or headboard) and emerge out at night to look for a blood meal.

Most people do not feel the bites at the time but may notice them after waking up; the bites may develop into itchy, red bumps (often several in a straight line or cluster) 1 to 3 days after being bitten (a delayed reaction up to 14 days is possible).

Adults are about the size and color of an apple seed, and immature bugs are smaller and lighter in color. Bed bugs cannot hop or fly.

In most cases, no medical treatment is needed. But if you have extremely itchy or painful red bites or you are concerned that you may have been bitten by bed bugs, you can call UHS for an appointment: 608-265-5600.

Bed bugs bites are not known to transmit any diseases to humans, but they can cause sleeplessness and anxiety, so the room should be professionally treated to eliminate them.

Some people never have any discomfort from being bitten, while others may have a strong allergic reaction, causing the bumps to be extremely itchy and painful. Because of the difference in how people's bodies react, one roommate may experience the bites as very problematic while another roommate may not be aware of them at all.

In recent years, most large universities have had some reports of bed bugs in one or more buildings, and UWMadison is no exception. However, to date, there have been only a handful of suspected and confirmed cases on campus, and we'd like to keep it that way. The university is extremely vigilant about this problem, and with your help, we can continue to keep the problem to a minimum.

There have also been occasional reports of bed bugs in off-campus housing. The City of Madison does not have a particularly large bed bug problem, but it is a metropolitan area, and standard precautions should be observed.

The best prevention against bed bugs is not to bring infested furniture into your room and to be careful when traveling to check your hotel room for evidence of bed bugs and use standard precautions in any hotel room. If you are concerned that you may have encountered bed bugs while traveling, it's wise when you return from a trip to launder your clothes and luggage (e.g., backpacks) in hot water before unpacking them in your room and dry it on high heat.

The more people who spend the night in a place, the more chances there are for a few bed bugs to come along for the ride, which is why even well-maintained hotel rooms can experience bed bugs.

1. When you arrive, check the bed for signs of bed bugs, and ask to change rooms if you see any. Look for:

If you are staying in a hotel or you rent an off-campus apartment, report the problem promptly to your building manager, landlord, or rental agency. If the problem is not handled, contact Public Health Madison & Dane County (Lodging/Facility Complaints 608-243-0330).

If you live in a UW residence hall or apartment, or are staying in a UW-operated hotel room, report the problem to the staff immediately (see numbers, below). They will alert the UHS Environmental Health Program and set up a prompt inspection. If there is evidence of bed bugs, a professional pest control operator will be brought in to treat the problem.

Don't be. Bed bugs have nothing to do with whether or not a person is clean, neat, or hygienic. There should be nothing more embarrassing about bed bugs than about being bitten by mosquitoes. However, it could cause embarrassment if you don't report it and bugs spread to other rooms or apartments as a result.

If you report a possible problem in a campus building, UHS Environmental Health will conduct an investigation as soon as possible, at least within 7 working days of your complaint. Try to not have your belongings strewn about; this allows bed bugs to hide and can impede the inspection and treatment.

Inspection will include looking at the sheets, bedding, mattress, and box spring. The inspectors may have to remove the sheets to look at the crevices within the mattress. Wooden bed frames may need to be dismantled; in hotels, the headboard will need to be removed from the wall. Dressers and other furniture, especially if made of wood or fabric, will be examined. Other areas that may be searched include carpeting, cracks in wood molding, ceiling-wall junctures, and wall-mounted picture frames, mirrors, and electrical-switch plates. If bed bugs or signs of bed bugs are found, the pest control operator will treat the room right away, and adjoining rooms may have to be inspected.

Heat is a common method being used to treat bed bugs. A core temperature of 120 F that is sustained for at least 2 hours should be an efficient means of killing bed bugs. Most of the time a machine that generates heat or steam is used to heat the entire room to 120 F this method kills bed bugs within mattresses, furniture and appliances.

Cold is another way to treat bed bugs; however, bed bugs can tolerate some pretty cold temperatures. To kill bed bugs, all items or furniture would need to be exposed to 0 F for several days.

Fumigation is the use of toxic gas to kill bed bugs. Chemicals, usually from the group known as synthetic pyrethroids, are used. However, some bed bugs have developed a resistance to many pesticides. Also chemical treatment is difficult because it is hard to reach within each crack and crevice. Usually several treatments are necessary to solve the problem.

This insect has a famous history as a bloodsucker and is named due to its tendency to feed on a bed's occupants at night. The bed bug primarily attacks humans but can feed on any warm blooded animal such as birds, mice, and pets. The bed bug is found worldwide and probably came to the US from Europe in the 17th century.

Adults are just under a 1/4" long and are relatively flat, nearly as wide as long, and oval in shape compared to most other insects. The color is brown to reddish brown. The body may have short golden hairs and will exude a "sickening sweet" smell from glands on its body.

Commonly, the first sign of bed bug infestation is the appearance of small brownish or reddish dots on bed linens. These are fecal spots or droppings on the surface of linens from these bugs. Occupants may also notice swelling where they have been bitten.

An infestation of bed bugs is NOT evidence of unclean or unsanitary living areas. World class hotels have reported bed bug infestation in recent years perhaps due to the increased domestic and international mobility of society in the past few decades.

Female bedbugs can lay over 500 eggs over a lifetime and each bed bug will molt or shed its shell five times as it grows and a blood meal is required for each molt. If blood meals become scarce, bed bugs can slow their life process until a blood meal source is found. The saliva of the bed bug may cause a swelling on most people when they are bitten but they do not leave a wound. Swelling may include redness in some sensitive people.

The bed bug is able to crawl into very small crevices in and around the human environment. These include between mattresses, seams in bed linens, upholstery, behind wood trim, inside electrical boxes, in floors, behind wallpaper, and in any other area near a blood meal that will hide a very thin insect.

Note, however, that bed bugs will move distances at night for a blood meal which is why infestations occur throughout bedroom areas, so merely washing bed linens or other infested areas might not eliminate the source. Bed bugs are also excellent at relocating by hitching rides in luggage, boxes, shoes, and any other mobile material.

Pest management professionals are often asked what individuals can do to avoid bring home a bed bug problem. Vacuum suitcases after returning from a vacation and then seal and dispose of the vacuum bag. When staying at a hotel always check your bed sheets and behind the headboard for tell-tale blood spots before unpacking your luggage.

Bed bugs are elusive creatures, so it is imperative to seek professional pest control to address an infestation. The first step of control is to have a professional thoroughly inspect the area. Heat is the most effective tool available for complete eradication of bed bugs and their eggs. When exposed to temperatures above 113F their cells stop working and their body tissues dry up leading to death within minutes.

This convection processes forces heat into beds, furniture, electronics, wall voids and clothing. I just returned from a conference where one presenter talked about the Bed Bug Epidemic. The epidemic seems to have started on the east coast and spread to the west coast. Major cities are the hottest spots. Major hotel chains are affected, although many will deny it. Expensive hotels are not immune. Bed bugs must eat a human blood meal each time they molt to the next nymph stage. They start as a translucent 1mm long egg, then molt through 5 stages, each looking like a bigger version of a bed bug until the adult stage which is 5mm long. They are flat like an apple seed and can go through small crevices between walls from one room to the next, thus an infestation in one hotel room, dorm, apartment, can go next door. They are becoming a problem in library books because people often take books to bed with them. They are infesting movie houses. They travel around on used furniture, not just mattresses. Mattress stores usually take your old mattress and put it in the same delivery truck with the new mattresses, thus spreading bed bugs. A big problem area is halfway and homeless areas. Although the CDC claims that they do not spread diseases, and the CDC also claims that Morgellons is delusional. It is known that bed bugs carry 20 some human diseases and MRSA (methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus) has been associated with spread via bed bug. Bed bugs become most active between 1 AM and 5 AM, they detect carbon dioxide (your breath) and heat, moving toward their next blood meal. First they inject you with an anticoagulant, then an numbing agent so you wont feel it when they bite to suck blood. Since they are injecting fluids it seems possible they could transmit disease. Often the bites will not be noticed for a day or so, so you may not connect where you got them. Some people will have all their old (healed) bites become re-inflamed when they get a new bite. Children from infested homes may spread them to new homes via sleepovers or school backpacks. Airline travelers can have their luggage infested via carry on or checked baggage. Dorm rooms because of the high turnover of used furniture are now a hot spot. Bed bugs have become resistant to the Pyrethroid insecticides that used to control them.

If traveling and staying at motels it pays to inspect behind the beds headboard where bed bugs congregate, there you may see the blood feces (black spots) where they poop after eating. Also they like to get between the mattress and spring set. In order not to infest your clothing it is advisable to place your luggage on the ironing board or other surface above the floor or bed and never put your shoes on the floor, instead also put the high up like on the table. Wearing long sleeved pajamas will help keep them off your arms. The bathroom is a fairly safe area, they do not like water or smooth surfaces. Seventy percent of bed bugs stay around the bed while another 23% are within five feet of the bed, but they can move 100 feet easily. Typically they can migrate under walls and get behind wall outlets. A more cluttered environment can make the problem worse.

Bed bugs can survive up to a year without feeding if it is cold (like a summer cabin in the winter), or 70 days at 70 degrees. Bed bug problems can be found at all levels of society. They are very hard to detect and eliminate.

How to Avoid Bed Bugs When You Travel | WanderWisdom

What are the Signs of Bed Bugs?

Most hotel managers will tell you that they know there is a bed bug problem once a guest complains of getting bitten! However, do not expect all travel properties to be accommodating of your complaints. The very idea of bed bugs is not one that future guests want to hear about. So, oftentimes, guests will be told that their bites are sand flies or mosquitoes, instead of bed bugs.

That's exactly what happened to me.

If you are wondering if you have bed bugs in your room, you can investigate. Signs of bed bugs include tiny spots of blood or dark brown/reddish bed bug droppings on the linens. You can also spot bed bug eggs (resembling tiny poppy seeds) along mattress seams. Although bed bugs themselves hide during the day, you might find them hiding under mattresses, behind loose wallpaper, in laundry baskets or in drawers near beds.

Professional pest control companies, like Orkin, can determine whether you have bed bugs. In fact, some dogs can be trained to sniff out the pests too!

For most people, the worst thing about getting bed bug bites is the idea of the tiny pests in their bed, biting them. Bed bug bites themselves are not usually dangerous or harmful. Few people will experience allergic reactions.

Unlike mosquitoes, bed bugs do not transmit disease. You could get an infection from scratching bed bug bites, but that is usually the extent of any potential problem.

Do be aware that bed bug bites seem to take forever to heal, and also that bites may not appear until days after you are bitten. I got my bites over a week ago, and the red dots stubbornly remain covering my feet and legs. A few stay bites are visible on my arms and hands, too.

If itching is a problem, ask your doctor if you can take over the counter antihistamines like Benadryl and/or use a topical cream with cortisone. Should your bites get infected, you may need antibiotics. Again, consult a medical professional.
