The city manager in Augusta, Maine, says the municipal office building had to be sprayed for bedbugs after a man threw a cup of the pests onto an office counter and about 100 of them scattered off.

City Manager William Bridgeo tells the Kennebec Journal the man apparently complained Friday to the code enforcement office about bedbugs at his former apartment then left, but returned after he showed the cup of bugs to a manager at his new apartment and was told he couldn't live there.

Bridgeo says the man let the bugs loose in the General Assistance Office where he asked for a form to request assistance and apparently was told he didn't qualify.

Police didn't immediately release the man's name or say if any charges would be filed.

Augusta City Hall reopens after bedbug dumping incident – WGME

This story is sure to make your skin crawl.

On Friday afternoon a man, apparently fed up with his experiences with bed bugs, dumped a Styrofoam cup of about a hundred of them on the desk of the general assistance office at Augusta City Hall.

Augusta City Manager Bill Bridgeo saiad when the man slammed the cup down on the counter, some of the bugs landed on the sweater of the woman who was working there.

The man told them he wanted the government workers to experience what he had been dealing with.

Over the weekend, the building was sprayed by exterminators, and next week bed bug-sniffing dogs will sweep the building to ensure none of the pests got away.

Police said the man has not been charged at this time, but the officials are encouraging the district attorney's office to prosecute him.

Bridgeo said he is most concerned about the well-being of his employees affected by this incident.

"Just the physical threat of being exposed to these things and somehow inadvertently carrying them home and contaminating their home with them was a concern, he said.

And the psychological thing that somebody would think so little of them or treat them in that way so as to do that. To me that's more disturbing than the actual physical threat."

Bridgeo said that he has been in this line of work for quite some time and this is one of the most bizarre things he has seen.

Disgruntled man releases bedbugs in government office – Fox 2 Detroit

AUGUSTA, ME (FOX 32 News) - A man in Augusta, Maine who was angry with the service at a government office released hundreds of live bed bugs as payback.

The man entered the municipal code enforcement office Friday and slammed a cup of the bugs on the front counter, releasing hundreds of the tiny pests.

Earlier that day the man had made a complaint at the office against his landlord, claiming a bed bug problem in his apartment building. He became angry after being told that he did not qualify for assistance.

"He whipped out a cup (full of live bedbugs) and slammed it on the counter, and bam, off they flew, maybe 100 of them," said City Manager William Bridgeo.

The bedbugs landed on the counter and on an employee. The building closed until an exterminator could kill and dispose of the bugs.

Charges have not been filed.

Angry man retaliates against city hall with cup of 100 bedbugs – Myjoyonline.com

A man unleashed approximately 100 bedbugs at the Augusta City Center in Maine on Friday, causing officials to close the building and summon pest control.

The man emptied a container filled with the insects on a counter when staff informed him that he did not qualify for assistance to address his bedbug issue, the Kennebec Journal reports.

He whipped out a cup (full of live bedbugs) and slammed it on the counter, and bam, off they flew, maybe 100 of them, City Manager William Bridgeo told the newspaper.

The man had applied to the states general assistance program after his former apartments bed bug problem caused him to get rejected from a new place to live.

WGME producer Ted Homer shared a series of photos showing the bugs scattered around a desk.

A municipal manager since 1976, Bridgeo said he could not recall anything as yucky as this.

Employees immediately called police, who located the man, according to WGME.

Of course, many people cringe at the thought of bedbugs, which research has shown are becoming resistant to current insecticides.
