Bed Bug Services – Northwest Exterminating

Bed bugs are elusive creatures, often found in mattresses and box springs, behind headboards, inside switch plates in couch cushions or in furniture seams. They are excellent hitchhikers. By hiding in clothing, they inadvertently go along for a ride to a new location, leading to their spreading.

Thought to be introduced with early colonists, bed bugs resurged about ten years ago in hotels and homes. It was attributed to increased international travel in addition to their ability to build up resistance to insecticides.

Bed bugs can be found anywhere there are people, particularly in areas with large populations. They have been reported in apartments, hotels, schools, retail stores, single-family homes and multi-family homes among others. Even five-star hotels are susceptible to these pesky critters.

Discovering bed bugs in such locations isnt very surprising, considering their close association with humans but this shouldnt cause panic or create fear. Often times the truth is fabricated about bed bugs but Northwest is here to give you the facts:

Although bed bugs have been found to carry more than thirty different human pathogens, there is no evidence that they transmit any disease to humans.

Bed bug presence has nothing to do with cleanliness. Bed bugs can be found anywhere there is a food source. However, clutter can hide bed bug introductions which can lead to more severe infestations.

Bed bugs can be found anywhere not just in beds.

Bed bug numbers on the rise in Central Illinois – Herald & Review

DECATUR Bed bugs, once nearly extinct in the United States, have come scurrying back in greater numbers and Central Illinois has been one of their landing spots.

In Hotels, apartment buildings, homes, restaurants, churches, libraries, movie theaters, taxis, storage sheds, schools, workplaces the small, flat, brown bugs with the big bite are back, and theyre everywhere.

Bed bugs arent disease carriers, which is good, but it also causes them not to fall under the authority of county and state health departments, or any other governmental organization. Theres no funding for prevention and extermination, and little information collected about exactly where theyre being found.

Still, even without solid statistics, the Macon County Health Department had enough evidence of bed bug infestations it sought to form a coalition to tackle the problem. In just a few months, the Bed Bug Coalition has had no trouble finding members. The city, landlords, business owners, schools, health and social service organizations, among others, are looking for answers.

It turns out, there arent any easy ones.

Graphic shows the life cycle of a bed bug.

Bed bugs spread easily, are drawn to warm bodies not trash and moisture, like many pests and are both difficult and expensive to get rid of.

Bed bugs dont care what socioeconomic status you are. They dont care what color or gender you are, said Kathy Wade, the department's director of environmental health. I dont think anyone saw it coming and hitting as hard as we got hit in Macon County. In the last week and a half, weve taken eight calls on bedbugs here. It is a problem.

Establishing just how rampant bed bugs are in Decatur is difficult, because no one is officially keeping track.

Nobody in the city of Decatur and Macon County as a whole has jurisdiction over bed bugs, Wade said. We dont have the funding to help, and the city doesnt have the funding to help. We cant track them. We have started keeping a list of how many calls come in, but we dont map them out.

A bed bug is shown with a penny to indicate scale. The pests hide in mattresses, furniture and clothing.

There is a list released annually by pest control company Orkin that identifies what it says are the Top 50 Bed Bug Cities. In the most recent list, the Springfield-Decatur-Champaign region had the 30th-most bed bug treatments performed by Orkin nationwide, second in the state only to Chicago. Central Illinois made the biggest jump of any city/region on the list, moving up 12 spots since the previous year.

But considering how many other pest control companies there are, and how many bed bug infestations that go untreated, the list is flawed. Tim Husen, Orkin entomologist and technical services manager, said the list is meant more as a conversation starter than scientific study.

Macon County Health Department's Kathy Wade is educating the community about bed bugs.Bed bugs dont care what socioeconomic status you are. They dont care what color or gender you are, she said.

The point of the list is to raise awareness of a serious issue, Husen said. Its a chance to educate people on bed bugs and what people can do to prevent them.

There arent any key factors that say why one city is ranked ahead of another.

Health department Administrator Dianna Heyer said bed bugs are a major issue in Macon County, but not more than anywhere else in the United States.

Its not just Decatur, Heyer said. Were not different than many other counties that are facing the same problems.

Richelle Irons, director of neighborhood services for the city of Decatur, said the city began receiving an uptick of bed bug calls late last year and referred callers to the health department, which in turn referred them back to the city.

Thats when we realized we needed to come up with some kind of solution, Irons said. Fortunately, the health department took the lead. Technically, they could have said this wasnt their problem.

Heyer said the department could not ignore the amount of calls it received.

We just decided we needed to do something, Heyer said. It was affecting so many people. It wasnt just the calls we were getting. It was our own employees who go into the homes.

Thats when the department decided to form the Bed Bug Coalition.

When you dont have the jurisdiction and you work in public health, its hard when somebody calls you to say, No, sorry, I cant help you, Wade said. So we decided to get all these different entities together and start a collaboration. We knew we had to educate people first.

The coalition has been meeting monthly since December. Wade said the first meeting covered basic facts, making sure if anyone fielded a call they knew enough to lead the person in the right direction.

The coalition decided that alerting the general public about bed bugs was the next step.

We didnt want to start a fire, but we wanted people to have knowledge, Irons said. The more information you have, the better choices you can make.

We wanted the first pamphlet to educate the people who have them and even the people who dont have them, so they know what to do, Wade said. You dont want people hiding them, you dont want them moving from one home to the next and not tell the homeowner or property manager that you had bed bugs.

"If you have bed bugs in your home or apartment and move to another place, youre just taking the bedbugs with you to a different place, and youre spreading them throughout the entire community.

And at the health department we have a lot of case managers and social workers who go out and do home visits. We wanted to create a guide for them, too.

Ed Bacon has run Gods Shelter of Love, an emergency shelter for women and children, since 2014. He once had a pest control license and treats the shelter monthly for typical maintenance, but hed never seen bed bugs until a resident reported bites to him a month ago. Bed bugs were found in two rooms at the shelter.

Bacon said he called around to pest control companies and was quoted a price from a Decatur-based company: three treatments for $400 each.

According to Scott Fisher of Scotties Pest Control in Decatur, three treatments is standard for getting rid of bed bugs, and the price runs from $250 to $1,000 per treatment, depending on the size of the dwelling.

Its not a onetime shot its a procedure, Fisher said. We use chemicals with residuals and direct-contact killing agents. Then we come back in two weeks and do it again, then usually again, then we come back and inspect the area to make sure theyre gone.

Bacon admitted he was lucky. After finding out the cost, he talked his brother, the owner of Bacon's Termite & Pest Control in the Springfield area, who agreed to provide service to the shelter for free.

We had one bedroom that was the epicenter and a second bedroom with babies, Bacon said. The whole place was treated all of the living room, and the downstairs and upstairs.

Bacon said he didnt escape all expense. The shelter spent $200 on laundry to clean all the bedding and clothing in the shelter.

It worked. Bacon said the only bed bugs they find now are dead ones. But it did force a change at the shelter.

When people come in now, all their belongings are immediately washed, Bacon said. Bed bugs are hitchhikers. They come in on people from the outside.

Bed bugs have been biting humans since the beginning of recorded time, according to "The History of Bed Bug Management" by Michael F. Potter in the spring 2011 issue of American Entomologist/.

"As civilization and commerce expanded, bed bugs spread throughout Europe and Asia ..." Potter wrote. "...Bed bugs were first reported in England in 1583 and became common by the 17th and 18th centuries. They hitchhiked their way to Americas aboard shipsof the first European explorers and settlers."

The paper notes the development of dichloro-diphenyl trichloroethane (DDT) was a turning point in the 1940s. DDT was legendary for its long-lasting effectiveness as dry deposit that did not require direct contact to kill bed bugs.

But DDT was banned in 1972 due to its detrimental effects on wildlife in agricultural use, ushering in what Fisher said was a kinder, gentler era of pest removal.

There are a lot of restrictions from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) on what we use to spray and how we spray it keeps our hands tied, Fisher said. We cant go in and spray chemicals directly on baseboards like we did 30 years ago.

As world travel increased, without the powerful chemicals that killed bed bugs, they begin to repopulate.

Fisher has been in pest control 38 years but never saw a bed bug until seven or eight years ago. Now, Fisher said he performs two bed bug jobs a week.

And were just a small-time operation, said Fisher, who was surprised when he first started seeing bed bugs regularly after never having seen them previously.

Because of those limitations, the amount of time and effort it takes to eradicate bed bugs has multiplied, leading to higher costs.

Bed bugs arent something you can send one person out to you need an entire crew to move furniture, mattresses and equipment, Fisher said. And weve spent eight to 10 hours in a classroom every year for the last three years just learning about bed bugs from people with PhDs.

Theyre so small, you really have to pay attention and get down underneath the bed and get on the floor. We also have to take more precautions than we ever did before. Theres a lot of time and money that goes into it on our end.

Fort Sask. travellers return home with bed bugs – Fort Saskatchewan Record

Bite marks, bug infestation, cleaning, tossing furniture its been one hell of a week for some Fort families.

Roughly 30 to 40 students from Fort High and St. John Paul II spent a week under the sun in Punta Cana only with some returning home with bed bugs.

The trip was part of the annual Student Trip (S-Trip), which allows students to celebrate the end of high school with their friends. The trip took place from July 7-15.

S-Trip is designed specifically for high school students and includes non-stop action day and night. The trip was in Punta Cana, the Dominican. They stayed at the Blau Natura Beach Resort, explained one Fort Saskatchewan mother dealing with bed bugs. They flew back to Toronto and stayed overnight at the Four Points Sheraton. My son and his roommate both have bites on them. First (my friend) contacted me and we compared pictures of marks on our boys.

While an Exact number of those affected with bed bugs could not be confirmed, both parents had a local exterminator company confirmed the bed bug situation in Fort Saskatchewan homes and it was rectified immediately.

A second mother confirmed her son arrived home with sores on his body that he thought was just acne.

Once she had an extermination company come to the house, they confirmed it was a case of bed bugs.

She actually stated wherever he stayed they have lots of bed bugs as he has numerous bites. He already had his luggage in our house for about an hour before he showed me the bites, the dogs (with the exterminator) detected bugs in his room and luggage and the exterminator closed off the room and treated it, explained the Fort mother. I can tell you this is devastating... We took every precaution and treated our house, our child, and (we all) had four hot showers... All his belongings were either tossed or washed, all luggage was tossed. We vacuumed immediately as soon as he showed me the bites because he had his suitcases upstairs already... and we had to throw out our vacuum.

She also discarded her childs bedding, a love seat and then the dog with the extermination company confirmed they were all clear.

At the time of The Fort Record deadline, S-Trip had been notified of the bed bug issue by a parent, and stated it was the first time they had heard of bed bugs at the resort and would look into the matter.

How to handle bed bugs

Based west of Edmonton, owner Susan Baxter of Zenas Extermination Company detailed how to handle bed bugs.

If coming back from a trip leave your suitcase outside, put your clothes in garbage bags and you wash them one at a time. The person that was on the trip takes a shower when he comes home, does the hair, puts clothes in the laundry and check yourself for bites, said Baxter.

The bites, much like those from a mosquito, will vary in size, depending on allergies.

Whenever you stay in a hotel, travellers can search for signs of bed bugs, such as stains on the seems of the mattress. If there are many bed bugs you will see them running around.

You should also put your suitcase on the table, not the floor or the bed because those are the areas where youll find most of the bugs. If you do get into a room where there are bugs, get the hotel or resort to switch you out to another room, she said.

Bed bugs are reddish-brown in colour and are about the same size and shape as an apple seed but as thin as a slice of paper.

Baxter also said it is very hard to pin point where people pick up bed bugs when traveling due to how many different locations the person has been, whether hotel, airplane or other transportation.

The only time you can say exactly where you got them from, is if you go to a hotel and youve never had bed bugs before and you wake up the next morning with bites on you, then you know this is where youre getting bed bugs, she said.

Bed bugs in apartments at 3134 Hagman Crescent – Houston Today

Houston tenants of an apartment building located on 3134 Hagman Crescent are concerned about a bed bug infestation and the use of the chemicals to battle the infestation.

Arvind Patel, owner of the apartment building, said the bed bugs were brought in to the buidling by a new tenant in February 2017.

I was on holidays in mid-February and the tenant tried to get a mattress in the building, which was infected, he said.

Patel said that it was not until mid-April that it was brought to his attention about a live bed bug in the building.

At the end of April the tenant vacated the property and then we treated it, said Patel. The first of May it was treated by a licensed exterminator.

When it did happen in February we immediately sent out traps to all the tenants, and said that in case there is something I want to know about it, said Patel.

Patel said that in mid-May, another tenant complained that there were bed bugs in their unit.

We gave them the off shelf treatment found at Home Hardware, said Patel. Because it was not an infestation. An infestation is when you have thousands or hundreds of them that you can see.

Green Earth Homecare Bed Bug & Crawling Insect Killer Dust was the treatment the tenant were given.

A tenant says that after using the product, he and his cats started to develop symptoms.

I was given a can of environmentally friendly powder that Arvind, the owner, gave one of the managers [that lives] across from me, and was told what Arvind said to do: Spray along the cracks and base boards, a tenant said.

The tenant added, I gave the cans out to neighbours and utilized the powder in my place as it says it is pet friendly. My cats developed scales on their noses since then and a very strong odour. My cats vomit frequently and so has my dog. My own lungs have also been succumbed by the fumes at times and my respiratory is cause for alarm.

According to Health Canada, since 2012 to 2017 there have been 38 incident reports documented listing this specific product. Of the 38 reports, 27 were recorded as humans as the incident type and domestic animals making up the other 11 reports, including symptoms such as throat soreness and irritation, coughing, and difficulty breathing for humans and vomiting and diarrhea for animals.

A second tenant said, Beginning of March we started having burning eyes, numbness in lips.

Green Earth Homecare Bed Bug & Crawling Insect Killer Dust is made of silicon dioxide present as 100 per cent Diatomaceous Earth (DE).

In an interview with Houston Today on July 12, 2017, Patel presented a document which lists one of the benefits of DE as, It is safe to apply near food, pets, and children.

Patel also provided a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) of JT Eaton Kills BedBugs and Crawling Insects Powder which is the product that is going to be used to seal around the perimeters.

I understand that they will try to flee [while the units are being heat treated] so the perimeters will be sealed with natural killer Diatomaceous Earth from both sides of the units.

The MSDS of JT Eaton Kills BedBugs and Crawling Insects Powder states Natural Diatomaceous Earth as a hazardous component.

Prolonged and repeated exposure to excessive concentrations of this products dust, or any nuisance dust, can cause chronic pulmonary disease. Dust contact with eyes may cause temporary scratchiness or redness, reads the MSDS.

A third tenant stated that Patel did not treat the original outbreak properly.

He used temporary spray that only caused the bed bugs to move to other units and apartments nearby. He resisted getting a certified exterminator until the problem had spread all over Houston. He also used uncertified employees/tenants to spray instead of going to an exterminator. People moved out taking bed bugs with them. Those moving in got their belongings infested.

The concerned tenants called Northern Health and lodged a complaint. Northern Health came to Housto and inspected the building on July 12, 2017.

At press time the inspector from Northern Health was unable to give a comment.
