Canada’s Top Bedbug Cities Are Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver – Huffington Post Canada

Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver are Canada's top cities for bedbug infestations, according to a list released by pest control company Orkin.

The data was assembled by adding up the number of commercial and residential treatments for bedbugs in those communities over the last 12 months, according to Global News.

Bedbugs are a growing problem in many Canadian cities and contrary to their name, they don't just live in mattresses and bedding. The tiny insects can also be been spotted in library books and on public transit.

Orkin warns that the little pests are "extremely efficient hitchhikers" and may crawl into your luggage or clothing.

While they don't spread disease, bedbug bites can result in itchiness and other skin reactions. Getting rid of the pests can be a bit more complicated, involving thoroughly cleaning sleeping areas, clothing and other furniture.

Three cities in B.C. are among the worst in Canada for bed bugs, according to pest-control company Orkin.

Toronto is worst for the hard-to-kill pests that cause itchy sores with their bites.

Vancouver ranked third behind Winnipeg, while Surrey and Burnaby came in at No. 20 and 21, respectively.

The top 25 was based on commercial and residential bed bug infestations treated by the company over the past year. Many of the worst cities were clustered in Southern Ontario.

"Bed bugs are extremely efficient hitch hikers. They can move easily across a room and climb onto luggage or anything left on a bed in just one night," the company says.

They can live for up to a year without food and can ruin a vacation. Experts recommend checking hotel room beds before settling in. Look forblood stains, dead bugs, eggs and bug exoskeletons.

Edmonton No. 6 on list of top Canadian bedbug cities – Edmonton Journal

Edmonton ranked sixth on a pest control companys list of the worst cities in Canada for bedbugs.

The city finished behind first-place Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Ottawa and St. Johns, N.L., according to a news release Tuesday from Orkin Canada.

The ranking is based on the number of commercial and residential treatments Orkin, which bills itself as Canadas largest pest-control company, carried out in each city between July 1, 2016, and June 2017.

It did not release the number of treatments in each city, saying the information is competitively sensitive.

Halifax; Sudbury, Ont.; Scarborough, Ont.; and Calgary rounded out the top 10.

Vishant Sharma, an Orkin Canada branch manager based in Edmonton, said the company receives daily calls about bedbug infestations.

He said the problem has gotten worse in the last decade as bedbugs hitchhike on travellers to the city including workers moving to the region during recent oil booms.

Theres a lot of reasons for it, he said of the increase. More international travel people are travelling a lot more now. People moving around, a lot of camp work, things like that.

New survey finds Peterborough is best in Canada for fewest bed bug cases – Peterborough Examiner

If Peterborough: Where Roads and Rivers Meet wasn't good enough for a city slogan/tagline, how about Peterborough: Where Beds and Bugs Don't Meet?

Peterborough ranked tops in Canada as the city with the fewest bed bug problems in a nationwide ranking of 25 Canadian cities released Tuesday.

The ranking of 25 Canadian cities was released by pest-control provider Orkin Canada, based on the number of residential and commercial bed bug treatments the company performed between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.

Even without including Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke, Toronto had the most bed bug cases, followed by Winnipeg in second, Vancouver in third and Ottawa fourth. Oshawa was 17th.

Bed bugs thrive in cool, dark places and, while rare, can be found on planes, trains and automobiles.

The critters could be present if you see any of these signs: dead bugs, spots of blood stains, or eggs in the crevice of folds of a mattress or sheets, any sort of soft furnishings and even framed photos. A clean room does not prevent bed bugs as two bugs can lay up to 10 eggs in a single day.

Those who are travelling are advised to keep their luggage elevated and away from linens and fabrics. If you suspect your luggage may have been carrying bed bugs following a trip, put all the clothing in the dryer at the highest appropriate temperature as heat is the only way to kill the bugs.

Orkin offers the following tips to avoid bed bugs while travelling:
