Cleveland tenants fight bed bug infestation, city ranked in top 15 for bed bug issues – News 5 Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Tenants living at the Abbeyshire Apartments on Rocky River Drive in Cleveland report they've been fighting a battle against bed bugs for the past several weeks.

Rose Mary Long said she's been a tenant at the complex for three years, and showed us the dozens of bed bug bites on her arms and legs.

Long said she even paid more than $860 to have exterminators treat her apartment, but believes the infestation in multiple units is so bad the bed bugs keep coming back.

"I can't sleep, I can't eat half of the time," said Long. "The scars are from the first round that I had them. They feast on human blood. When I kill them and everything, then the blood splatters."

Long said apartment management has been aware of the situation since early July but is now just calling additional exterminators to the scene.

Long said multiple visits by exterminators has so far proven to be ineffective, and she's hoping apartment management will follow-up on the chronic problem.

News 5 made three phone calls to apartment management about this case, but we are still waiting for a return phone call.

According to Orkin's annual top 50 list of bed bug cities, Cleveland has repeatedly made it into the top 15.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Health reports the problem is so extensive it has launched a bed bug task force.

The board of health said it's up to tenants to report bed bug issues to their city building department and get inspectors on the case.

The Cleveland Department of Public Health has even put together a guide on how tenants and homeowners should deal with and report bed bug issues.

Cleveland has also launched a bed bug assistance program to help seniors and adults deal with the growing problem.

Terminix Releases Top 20 Bed Bug Cities List – Business Wire (press release)

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Just in time for late-summer vacations and students returning to college campuses, Terminix, a leading provider of termite and pest control services in the United States and a ServiceMaster (NYSE: SERV) company, released a list of the top 20 bed bug-infested cities in America, based on service requests the company received during the first half of 2017.

The list includes cities across the United States and features the following five top cities: Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, Las Vegas, and Denver. Four states scratched their way onto the list with more than one city: Ohio, Arizona, Pennsylvania and California.

The top 20 cities for bed bug infestations in the United States* are:

The bed bug experts at Terminix say that bed bug infestations have significantly increased since the late 1990s, and while researchers are unsure of the exact causes, factors such as increased international travel and insecticide resistance likely bear some responsibility.

Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to eradicate, said Paul Curtis, director, technical services at Terminix, and they can travel to new locations very easilyhitching a ride on clothing, handbags, suitcases and taxis, which can create substantial infestations in no time.

Without the help of a professional, bed bugs can hide undetected for months. Signs of an infestation include reddish-brown blood spots on sheets or mattresses, a strong musty odor, or sightings of the pests themselves, which are the size, shape and color of an apple seed. Home or business owners who suspect a bed bug problem should contact a pest control company as soon as possible to schedule an inspection.

*This list was created by compiling actual services data from more than 300 Terminix branches across the country. The rankings represent Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) with the highest number of actual services between Jan. 1, 2017 and June 30, 2017.

THE BEDBUG

Twas on a sultry summer night, The moon was shining calm and bright, When from my couch I rose to fight The bedbug.

I uttered many a sad lament, As on my murderous search intent, Into each hidden crack I went For bedbugs.

My wretched limbs were smarting well, And O, my anguish who can tell, As oft I caught the sickening smell Of bedbugs.

Their stinging bites, how well I know When, with a sure, death-dealing blow, I pounce upon my luckless foe, The bedbug.

And ever, how my spirit grieves, As 'mong the Bible's sacred leaves I find those dirty, skulking thieves, The bedbugs.

And oft I start, in dread affright, When on the parson's collar white There scrambles out, in plainest sight, The bedbug.

And through my head this query ran: How in the name of mercy can To church a decent, Christian man Bring bedbugs?

And let them run and dodge about, Play 'hide and seek,' and in and out Upon the carcass of the lout, Unheeded.

Should 'auld Nick's' pitchfork need a prong, Wherewith to probe the tortured throng, He only needs to send along Some bedbugs.

NWGHA to participate in bed bug eradication trial – Northwest Georgia News

The Northwest Georgia Housing Authority has been selected to participate in a research trial of a new chemical product to get rid of bed bugs without displacing apartment dwellers for an extended period of time. The housing authority also approved a new Working Preference policy that will impact residents of five public housing complexes in Rome and Rockmart.

Norman Pleger, the director of technical services for the housing authority, told the board of directors Wednesday the agency will be the only housing authority in Georgia to participate in the study being led by Professor Nina Jenkins at Pennsylvania State University. Its an all natural bio-insecticide, Pleger said. You dont have to move out of the house, but they recommend that you do stay out of the house about four hours after the application.

Pleger said the treatment completely eradicates bed bugs within four to seven days. He said the early research recommends application in areas that are prone to bed bugs at least once a quarter.

The trial is expected to take place beginning in November. The housing authority board approved the new Working Preference policy that will be applied to residents of the new Joe Wright Village on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the Village Green and Willingham Village at Division Street apartments off Division Street, the Charles Hight Homes on Avenue B in Rome and the Jackson Square apartments in Rockmart.

All of the properties are newer developments that have higher rental rates for residents. The new policy provides that the head of household in any of the Working Preference developments must be working at least 30 hours a week at minimum wage or above. If that person loses his or her job, they have three months to obtain employment.

If the person cannot get another job, the housing authority would have the right to relocate the family to other properties owned or managed by the housing authority.

The new policy is not slated to go into effect until Oct. 1. Pleger said the duplex and single-family units at Joe Wright Village should be ready for occupancy late this fall.
