Fourth federal government office building treated for bedbugs – Ottawa Citizen

A fourth federal government office building is being treated for bedbugs, and while Public Services and Procurement Canada says the problem remains low-level, one union says it has the potential to cause bigger trouble.

Workers at 22 Eddy St. in Gatineau were working from home Thursday.

From what Ive been told, its only on the eighth floor that they have found some (bedbugs), said Eddy Bourque of the Public Service Alliance of Canada.

But as weve seen with the workplace on Crmazie, they thought it was just one floor and when they did testing it was found on every single floor. So I think this is bringing awareness of the problem.

It seems like were seeing a trend here and I know in Montreal its the same thing.

The bugs can hitch a ride in a handbag or on someones clothing and travel to the employees home, he said. The union wants their employer to pay for cases where a workers home is contaminated after exposure at work.

Its a concern for the health and safety of the members.

PSPC wrote to say a small number of bugs were discovered at 22 Eddy on Tuesday, adding: Immediate action was taken that same evening and included specialized removal of affected office equipment, specialized inspection of work stations and common areas, steam cleaning of affected and adjacent work stations and installation of specialized traps. On October 25, the pest control company will proceed with treatment of the entire floor where the bed bugs were discovered. Employees of the affected workstations area have been asked by their employer, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), to work from home until the situation has been resolved. The pest control specialists have implemented measures that are allowing continued occupation of the rest of the building.

Three other government office buildings were recently affected by bedbugs:

350 King Edward Ave. Bugs were found, the area was sprayed, and PSPC says bugs have not been found recently.

70 Crmazie in Gatineau, where workers were recently sent home to allow for spraying and cleaning.

325 Queen St. on the seventh floor west. This has been a low-level infestation lasting from the summer of 2018 until recently, PSPC says. It says bugs continued to show up in traps in a small area, one or two at a time, but they have not been seen in recent checks.

Bedbugs are good at hiding in carpets, upholstery and dark corners. They come out at night and bite people as they sleep. The bites do not cause disease but can become itchy or sore. Extreme cases can cause significant blood loss.

Ottawa Public Health has extensive information on bedbugs online.

PSAC gets active as more bedbugs show up in federal offices – Ottawa Citizen

Bedbugs showed up in two more federal office buildings in the past week, bringing the total in the capital to five and stirring the Public Service Alliance of Canada to new action.

New in the past week were small numbers of bedbugs found in the Jeanne Mance Building at Tunneys Pasture and another facility at 22 Eddy St. in Gatineau.

Previously the blood-sucking insects had shown up on one floor each at 235 Queen St., 70 Crmazie St. and 350 King Edward Ave.

The latest two findings brought this statement fromEddy Bourque, national president of the Canada Employment and Immigration Union, speaking on behalf of PSAC.

Were very concerned with the recent outbreak of bed bugs in federal buildings across Canada. This is a serious health and safety issue affecting workers, and the government needs to take proactive measures to eradicate bed bugs in all federal buildings. These are not isolated cases; bed bugs have been found in federal buildings in Ottawa, Gatineau, Montreal, Hamilton, Toronto and Winnipeg.

Bedbugs are good at hitching rides in the clothing or handbags of people who move from one building to another.

PSAC calls on the government to:

Proactively inspect all federal government buildings across Canada with sniffer dogs to check for bed bugs. Fumigate the entire building if bed bugs are found, not just one floor or section. Cover all fumigation expenses for federal employees who find bed bugs in their homes if they work in a building where bed bugs were found. Provide accommodations for employees to work from home or tele

PSAC also wants a registry of buildings with a history of the bugs and training for employees on how to recognize them

Public Services and Procurement Canada says it has been treating outbreaks quickly and effectively, in most case eliminating the problem.

Bed bugs found on chairs at Mott Community College – MLive.com

FLINT, MI -- Officials at Mott Community College have removed chairs from a building on the Flint campus after they were notified of bed bugs found on the furniture.

An email sent out Friday, Oct. 18 by Jason Wilson, the colleges vice president of student success services, discusses the discovery of the bugs on Thursday in the Mott Memorial Building student lounge, room 2140.

The chairs have been removed and are being treated, reads the email addressed to faculty, staff, and students. "The other furniture has been secured and isolated from use."

The email further states Dr. Russell Bush, physician director for the colleges Health Services office, has provided resources about this issue.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture all consider bed bugs a public health pest, according to the EPA website. However, unlike most public health pests, bed bugs are not known to transmit or spread disease.

News of the bed bugs at Mott Community College adds to the list of Genesee County schools dealing with the matter.

Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools sent home information with students in recent days cautioning parents of bed bugs found Oct. 2 in a classroom at the districts high school, 1300 N. Linden Road, in Flint Township.

The district is operating under the guidance of the Genesee County Health Department and the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Eddie Kindle, superintendent of Carman Ainsworth Community Schools, stated in an Oct. 14 letter to parents that the health department advised schools not be closed due to bed bugs.

Finding a bed bug does not mean that the school building is infested, Kindle said.

However, the district always works to identify pests, provide thorough inspections of schools and have licensed pest control specialists to treat rooms as appropriate.

Steps Carman-Ainsworth is taking include:

The 10 Best Bed Bug Exterminators Near Me (with Free …

Bed bugs can travel into your home via luggage, secondhand furniture or clothing, and other items that have been exposed to the little pests. Bed bugs are tiny and flat (about the size of an apple seed and the height of a credit card), so they can easily hide in dark, small places and hitchhike into your home. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people dont even know theyre transporting bed bugs as they travel from location to location, infecting areas as they travel. The sooner you notice a bed bug infestation in your home, the easier it is to get rid of it. The EPA suggests an integrated pest management plan to get rid of bed bug problems. This means a multi-pronged approach that takes the bugs life cycle into account, uses chemical treatment where needed, and takes all necessary measures (use of encasements, high heat washing and drying of bedding, etc.) to stop current and future life cycles. Unless you feel confident about controlling a bed bug infestation, it can be wise to hire a pest management professional to prevent the problem from getting bigger.

It gets worse: cockroaches also found at bed bug infested government office in Ottawa – CTV News

CTVNewsOttawa.ca Staff Published Friday, October 4, 2019 10:30PM EDT Last Updated Saturday, October 5, 2019 10:56AM EDT

The news keeps getting worse for government workers at 350 King Edward Avenue. In addition to a bed bug infestation, the government will also spray for cockroaches on Sunday, October 6th.

An email sent to all occupants of the building warns that "the 3rd floor kitchenette will be treated for cockroaches". Employees will not have access to the kitchen during treatment and it will be tarped off, according to the email.

Shared Services Canada says the building is still operating, and is safe for employees.

A spokesperson for the federal agency says bed bugs were found at 18 work stations on three floors of their building at 350 King Edward Avenue. The first confirmation came Sept. 14.

SSC says the building was treated a week later on September 21, with another treatment the next day.Special traps were placed around the affected areas. A spokesperson says the most recent inspection was negative for bedbug activity. A complete inspection of the building will take place later this month.

But in an email to CTV News, an employee who works at the building, who wants to remain anonoymous, says this is not a new problem.

"Dealing with pests in this building is nothing new for us. Bed bugs were first reported and treated on the first floor of the building in March and April 2018".

Late Friday, the government confirmed bedbugs were first detected at 350 King Edward in late March of 2018. The government says they detected another infestation in September of 2018, and then again in August of this year.

Workers at the building -- both civil servants and contractors -- were moved to different work stations that were deemed bed bug free after the latest infestation. SSC says employees were also offered additional assistance, through the employee assistance programand through info sessions for staff and contractors. They were also given materials from Ottawa Public Health on how to prevent the spread of bedbugs.

Bed bugs were virtually eradicated in North America in the 1950s, but made a resurgence in the late 1990s.
