Concern over reported bedbug situation at West Side CTC – wnep.com

Pictures were given to Newswatch 16 by students at West Side CTC in Pringle. They say the photos prove that the school has a serious bedbug problem.

PRINGLE, Pa. Some parents and students in Luzerne county believe bedbugs have been found throughout West Side Career and Technology Center.

Students say they have been finding what they believe are bedbugs in hallways, classrooms, and even inside books for more than a year.

"People are seeing bedbugs squashed with blood in it, so that means they're biting people," said student Chelsea German-Spencer.

"If they come home with the bedbugs, it's going to costs thousands of dollars to get rid of them, first of all, and then you have to buy all new furniture. A lot of parents are upset with this. They kept their kids home over it. I even kept my daughter home because I don't want bedbugs. I make her strip at my door," said parent Pamela German.

Steven Dorshefski says the bug problem at West Side CTC caused him to leave the school and go to Wyoming Valley West instead. He says his sister also went to West Side CTC and brought home bedbugs that cost his family $1,300 to get rid of.

"Because they never properly take care of this issue. My sister graduated two years ago, and when she first started, there they were there, and they've been there years and years," Dorshefski said.

The school sent out a letter to parents saying each time a sighting is reported, the room is evacuated, and a pest management contractor is brought in to inspect and treat the room if necessary.

"I feel that they should, like, properly treat the whole school. Treating one room is not going to get rid of the bedbugs. You have to treat the whole entire infected area," German said.

The letter also states that more than 700 people come in and out of the school each day, and it's nearly impossible to find the source of the problem. Still, students say something needs to be done.

"If they're not taking drastic measures, then I don't feel safe. That's supposed to be a safe place where I am supposed to learn and where I am supposed to grow and communicate and get a job and everything," German-Spencer said.

Newswatch 16 reached out to the administrative director at West Side CTC in Pringle, but he was not available to speak with us.

Planning a Vacation? Here’s How to Make Sure You Don’t Bring Any Bed Bugs Home With You – Mental Floss

Yellowstone National Park attracts more than 4 million visitors per year as the fifth-most visited national park in the U.S. People come to this 3472-square-mile tract of Western wilderness for its towering mountains, charismatic megafauna, and, of course, its spectacular geysers. While there are loads of hydrothermal features to see, the most iconic geyser by far is Old Faithful, named by explorers in 1870. Here are a few facts about this Wyoming wonder.

Theres a longstanding myth that Old Faithful erupts every hour. According to the National Park Service (NPS), this has never been true. On a typical day, Old Faithful shoots out a plume of superheated steam around 17 times, anywhere from 60 to 110 minutes apart. Geologists can use the duration of the latest outburst and other factors to determine how long it may take for the next one to arrive. The formulas success rate speaks for itself: 90 percent of Old Faithfuls eruptions take place within 10 minutes of these calculated predictions.

Geysers occur when a subterranean reservoir of water is warmed enough to burst through Earths crust. Below Yellowstone National Park lie two volcanic chambers loaded with molten rock called magma. On top of the chambers are cavities of groundwater. The magma heats the underground water and pressure builds until water bubbles out of the ground, releasing some of the pressurewhich causes vigorous boiling and a subsequent explosion of water. Thats when the fun starts.

A geysers underground dimensions play an important part in its eruptions. The narrow reservoirs constrict the water in a tight space, while the overhanging rock creates pressure. The water at the bottom of the geyser experiences additional pressure because the cooler water nearer the top of the reservoir pushes down on it. These forces keep the low-lying water liquid, even as it grows hotter and hotter. Within Old Faithful, groundwater can hit temperatures as high as 244F. Despite exceeding waters normal boiling point at sea level of 212F, this water doesnt transform into gasinstead, it becomes superheated.

The built-up steam and boiling water reacts to the geysers internal pressures by shooting dramatically out of the Earth. Each eruption can emit 3700 to 8400 gallons of water skywards.

There are more than 500 geysers among over 10,000 hydrothermal structures in Yellowstone National Park. Geologists divide them into nine clusters called geyser basins. Old Faithful is the centerpiece of the Upper Basin in the parks western half, which contains at least 150 individual geysers. That makes it the biggest concentration of geysers on planet Earth.

Native people have inhabited what is now Yellowstone National Park since time immemorial. The Crow named the hydrothermal areas of what is now Yellowstone National Park the land of the burning ground or land of vapors, according to historian Lee H. Whittlesey [PDF]. [The] Crows specifically called the Yellowstone geysers Bide-Mahpe, meaning sacred or powerful water, Whittlesey writes. The Flatheads and Kiowas names for the parks geyser region translate to smoke from the ground and the place of hot water, respectively.

The first privately funded American expedition to the Yellowstone area took place in 1869, and the explorers published an updated map of the region. That encouraged another, larger expedition the following year, led by former Congressman Henry D. Washburn and businessman Nathaniel P. Langford with a military escort by Gustavus C. Doane. Langford described a perfect geyser It spouted at regular intervals nine times during our stay, the columns of boiling water being thrown from 90 to 125 feet at each discharge, which lasted from 15 to 20 minutes. We gave it the name of Old Faithful.

Today, feeding a bear at Yellowstone National Park can earn you a $5000 fine and a six-month prison sentence. In the past, though, the parks attitude was far more lax. Before World War II, Yellowstone managers would encourage bears to dine at purpose-built trash dumps, which attracted huge crowds of visitors. One of these heaps, located near Old Faithful, was marked with a wooden sign that said Lunch Counter for Bears Only.

That honor goes to the Steamboat geyser, a monster capable of launching 300-foot columns of water and steam. By comparison, the tallest plumes from Old Faithful are around 184 feet high. But its harder to plan a visit around Steamboats eruptions. It once went dormant for 50 years, and though its recently become more active, it still erupts far less often than Old Faithful.

In 1959, 1983, and 1998, earthquakescaused dips in the geysers daily eruption average. As the NPS explains, the average interval between eruptions has been lengthening during the last several decades. Thats correlated to the durations of the outbursts themselves. If an eruption lasts for more than 2.5 minutes, youll probably have to wait an hour and a half to watch the next one. But shorter eruptions mean shorter wait periods. And in recent years, lengthy eruptions have become more common.

Someone just found a bed bug on a TTC subway seat

Taking public transit is already stressful enough without the added effort of trying not to think about how dirty it is.

Well, here's that reminder for you: bedbugs are spotted in very public places all the time. In fact, Toronto was recently named the worst city for bedbugs in Canada.

They can basically pop up anywhere, but when it's somewhere public, it can be horrifying.

The latest bedbug locale: Line 1 of the TTC.

A large reddish bug was spotted crawling along the blue fabric seats of the subway on Line 1.

Many pointed out on Twitter than vinyl seats are often used for a reason. They're easy to clean and less likely to hang on to dirt (and bugs).

Others were wondering whether the small creature paid its Presto fare. It probably didn't.

The TTC customer service Twitter folks responded to questions to let concerned (and horrified) readers know that all the vehicles are cleaned daily. If something is spotted, send in a complaint and they'll give that vehicle a real deep clean.

The customer service staff also pointed out that bedbugs are unlikely to thrive in such an "inhospitable environment" as the subway.

Hopefully that helps you sleep at night.

Got Bedbugs? This Startups Topical Spray Will Chase Them Away. – Forbes

Jennifer Gere remembers well what inspired her and her husband to spend a decade developing CimexiShield, a topical spray they say is the worlds first and only lab-tested bed bug repellant.

CemixiShield claims to be the world's only bed bug spray.

We were on vacation with our kids at a resort in Florida, Gere said. It was the middle of the night when we heard all this commotion outside. A woman was screaming that her kids were getting bit. We had no idea what was going on.

What was going on was a bedbug infestation. Imagine going to bed at night and waking up with your body covered in bug bites. Its the stuff of nightmares.

Gere was so bothered by her experience in Florida that she decided to start looking for something to take on trips that would protect her and her family from bedbugs. She quickly realized there was nothing.

I started to think about how I could make something to do something about this, she said.

Bedbugs have an anesthesia in their saliva that prevents you from knowing you're being bitten until ... [+] it's too late.

Geres husband, Joe, knows a thing or two about bedbugs. His company in New Jersey, BedBug Chasers, utilizes special heaters he designed to rid homes and businesses of bed bugs.

We realized that chemicals werent that effective against bedbugs any longer, Joe said. The only way to really kill them was with heat.

At 122 degrees Fahrenheit, all stages of bedbugs die, according to Joe. With his heaters, Joe raises the temperature in a home or hotel room to 130 or 135 degrees and keeps it there for hours so theres no chance of survival for any bedbugs in the house or room.

Typically we arrive around 8:30 in the morning and were done with our treatment by 2 in the afternoon, Joe said. With cool down you can be back in your home by 4, unlike the traditional chemical process, which takes four to six weeks. This is one day.

Bloodsucking bedbugs are formidable opponents. They have two sensors, one long-range and the other short-range. Their long-range sensors pick up on carbon dioxide, which is how they find where you are in your house or hotel room, by sensing your exhaled breath. Once they get in your general vicinity, a short-range heat sensor brings them directly to you.

Heat plus carbon dioxide equals food, Joe said. Its right out of the movie, Aliens.

It gets worse. Bedbugs have an anesthesia in their saliva that prevents you from knowing youre being bitten until its too late.

Nobody wants to be bitten by a bedbug, thats going to ruin your day, Joe said.

Jennifer and Joe Gere of CimexiShield.

After years of experimentation with different natural repellants, Jennifer and Joe came up with CimexiShield.

Its an oil-based product, all essential oils, Joe said. Its like any other moisturizer. Rub it into your skin and now youre fine.

Jennifer said the main ingredient of CimexiShield is lemongrass, plus a proprietary blend of several other oils. As she developed her bedbug spray, Jennifer tested prototypes on herself, tapping into a constant supply of bedbugs from her husbands work.

I have to give Jen credit, Joe said. She was a trouper, not only going through years of trial and error but also constant exposure. Does this one bite me or not?

Once she had arrived at a winning formula, Jennifer gave it to a third-party lab to be certified with blind testing on more than 100 people to make sure it was safe and effective. The certification was required by Amazon, where Joe and Jennifer are selling CimexiShield for $24.95 for a 2-ounce bottle.

The spray has two 5-star reviews so far, and Jennifer said sales are climbing every week.

Im just very excited about the whole thing, she said. Its so nice to help people that are living in fear with anxiety.
