Officials: Bed bug infestations on the rise in Alaska …
Tiny insects the size of apple seeds are infiltrating Alaska, sucking on the blood of unsuspecting travelers, apartment dwellers, home owners, school children and the elderly, among others.
People from all walks of life are struggling with them, said Karin Hendrickson, pesticide control program manager with Alaskas Department of Environmental Conservation. We get multiple calls a day.
The pest in question? Bed bugs. Theyre becoming a big problem in many parts of the state, particularly rural areas, health officials and exterminators say.Hendrickson will speak about Alaska's bed bug problem at a tribal environmental-management conference tomorrow in Anchorage.
Her office used to field about one or two bed bug calls a year, she told KTUU. Now its about one to three calls every day."
State epidemiology officials have also noticed the upward trend. As far as whats causing bed bugs to proliferate in Alaska, they cite increased travel, immigration, and bed bugs becoming resistant to insecticides.
Anchorage-based American Pest Management services cities and remote villages across Alaska. Larry Jones, operations and technical director, said hes never been so busy and bed bugs are his prime target.
...
Twelve years ago we were doing one or two bed bug jobs every month or so. Now I have seven techs working seven days a week in Anchorage alone. In Fairbanks, I have three techs and theyre working six days a day, and theyre booked solid, Jones said.
Jones has come up with a neighborhood discount pricing program tailored for villages. Normally, if one of Jones teams travels to a remote location they would charge $2,000 plus airfare per family or single customer. But because the problem has grown so much, people are now pooling resources. If Jones gets five or six families that want their homes exterminated together, hell charge a flat rate of $2,000 plus airfare for the group.
Jones gets rid of the bugs with a variety of treatments. Portable heat chambers are a preferred method for remote communities. Jones techs will place contaminated items like sofas and mattresses inside the heated chamber and crank it up to 145 degrees F. The furniture, clothing, or infested items will essentially cook for a number of hours until the bed bugs and their eggs are dead.
While calling in a professional is an option, its costly and Hendrickson likes to stress that there are a number of steps people can take to eliminate the problem on their own.
The first thing to do is to inspect beds and sofas regularly, looking at mattress seams, box springs, and others nooks and crannies where bed bugs like to hide. Washing sheets and other bedding regularly is recommended, as is cleaning up cluttered spaces, especially in the bedroom. People should consider using bed bug-resistant mattress encasements as well, said Hendrickson.
If you find bed bugs, dont panic, both Hendrickson and Jones said. Bed bugs arent known to transmit disease although they are considered a public health nuisance and can cause adverse physical, mental and financial consequences, according to the state epidemiologists office.
If items are heavily infested and cant be washed and put in a dryer, it might be best to throw them out instead of trying to kill each and every bed bug and egg. But many places, like hard surfaces, can be wiped down with household cleansers and the bugs squished, placed in plastic bags, and disposed of properly. The Department of Environmental Conservation has an entire page devoted to bed bugs with lots of tips on control and prevention.
Hendrickson and others recommend checking out a hotels bed bug report card before traveling. Bedbugregistry.com is one source but lots of travel review websites are easily accessible online.
Whenever she stays in a hotel Hendrickson always places her luggage (a duffle bag that she can immediately wash and dry at home) on the toilet or in the bathtub before checking the bed thoroughly.
EPA recently awarded a grant to Bristol Bay Area Health Corp. and Tanana Chiefs Conference to address bed bugs in rural Alaska. Leif Albertson, with the Cooperative Extension Service in Bethel, is a member of a new advisory group being formed as a result of the grant. He said that funds will be used to create tools and do outreach to eradicate bed bugs in rural Alaska. Some of the funds will go toward building reusable hot boxes that be used for decontaminating large items like couches and other furniture infested with beg bugs.
Im really excited about it, Albertson said.

Bed bugs B.S. in the media: Ohios secondhand stores
Though the media frenzy around bed bugs is conveying lots of good information, the bed bug B.S. is not any less prevalent than it used to be.
First, lets consider this NBC 4i report that explores the issue of bed bugs and secondhand merchandise in Ohio.
(If embedded video does not play, click here to view.)
NBC 4i notes:
The owner of Trader Tots in Grandview told NBC 4 that she had to get a special license from the state to sell items like upholstered furniture, bedding and stuffed toys.
That license allows owner Michelle Salisbury and her employees to use a special chemical to fight bed bugs and other problems.
Really? Secondhand store employees are licensed to use magic bed bug juice? Something the rest of us cant get?
Ooooh! What is it? Tell us more!
Dont get too excited.
The license doesnt allow Ohio secondhand store owners and employees to use a special chemical to kill bed bugs. (Well, except that all chemicals are special in their own way. Like snowflakes!)
In fact, the Ohio laws require people who sell upholstered furniture, bedding, and stuffed items like toys to sanitize them, label them, and keep them separate from non-sanitized items.
Unfortunately, as is true in other states, these laws do not take into account how difficult it is to sanitize items to make them free of bed bugs.
According to the Ohio Dept. of Commerce Second Hand Procedures (PDF), the most popular method is using a spray. (The fact sheet does not outline what the less popular methods are, implying by omission that merchants have no other or better options.) The two sprays approved for this purpose: Steri-Fab and MicroBan X-580 Plus.
MicroBan X-580 Plus (label PDF) is a pyrethrin-based product. Steri-Fabs active ingredients (label PDF) include synthetic pyrethrins, and alcohol.
These products have a place in the arsenal, but theyre not magic juice, and you dont need a special license to apply them.
(Of course, please use caution when applying any pest control products; were glad to see that Ohios Second Hand Procedures says the law requires use in accordance with labeling instructions and the use of an approved type mask.)
These products do kill bed bugs. But a spray with them is not going to kill all bed bugs present unless they are sprayed directly, or eventually cross a residual which kills them.
Any spray used on these items is not going to 100% guarantee that all bed bugs and eggs inside are dead. Not by a long shot. That pyrethroid-resistance is widespread is another reason to be concerned about relying on it as a residual.
Which means that these products dont really prevent bed bugs from being inside secondhand merchandise, or guarantee they dont go home with shoppers.
Shopkeeper Michelle Salisbury seems to really care about preventing the spread of bed bugs to her customers, and yet the information the state is providing her and the sanitizing laws its requiring this and other merchants to follow are likely giving a false sense of security.
And shoppers are not being sufficiently warned of the potential condition of used stuffed items by the required label: SECONDHAND MATERIAL, CONTENTS UNKNOWN. THIS ITEM HAS BEEN SANITIZED. Most people would probably assume sanitized means 100% sanitized, rather than an attempt was made at sanitizing.
And if that creeps you out, remember that this is not an Ohio-specific problem. New York still allows secondhand mattresses to be resold after being spritzed with Steri-Fab.
I am glad the Ohio shopkeeper profiled here also does visual inspections, since this is very important, but these are not reliable, especially with items like mattresses, upholstered furniture, and stuffed animals, where bed bugs may be hiding inside.
Done properly, heat treatment or gas fumigation would be one-shot reliable methods for eliminating bed bugs in these items. Small items could be treated in a Packtite, but it would be costly to treat larger items and most secondhand shops probably could not afford something like this.
Merchants not only need laws which mandate procedures which really do render items 100% bed-bug-free, but if those laws are enacted, they also may need help in setting up the infrastructure to comply with them.
And thats the big problem when it comes to eliminating bed bugs: money.

Bed Bugs – Arrow Termite and Pest Control
Bed Bugs
A few years ago bed bugs seemed like a myth and were only heard of through a nursery rhyme. However in recent years, bed bug cases have been more common and an increasing problem in major cities with international travel continuing to rise and the 1972 ban of DDT. It is not uncommon to find bed bugs even in nice hotels. Because bed bugs disfavor bright light, they are mainly active at night. Bed bugs have a tiny flat oval body which allows them to hide easily.
Waking up with itchy or bruised skin is a common sign of a bed bug problem. Although they are called bed bugs, they do not just live in beds. Clutter, baseboards, carpeting, sofas and other furniture are all posh resorts for bed bugs. Fortunately, a bed bug problem is entirely controllable under professional care. Using state of the art equipment and techniques, our certified technicians will inspect your homes environment and construction to identify the problem and determine the best course of action. We are committed to providing a quick, affordable, and most importantly, effective solution to your pest problem, and we take every measure to protect you and your familys safety throughout the process. So whether you suspect you have a bedbug problem or just want to make sure you never get one, we have the expertise and training to get rid of your unwanted house guests for good.
Besides gross, bed bugs are nocturnal insects that feed on human and pet blood. They need a blood meal in order to grow and produce eggs. They are about 1/8 inch long and reddish-brown (after feeding) with oval, flattened bodies. During the daytime, they hide in cracks close to where humans sleep, such as voids in mattresses, box springs, bedframes, pictures, baseboards, and headboards. Attracted to body heat and carbon dioxide, they can easily locate humans at night to feed. The only good thing associated with bed bugs is that they do not typically spread diseases.
Usually bed bugs are imported into a home through old furniture, beds, visitors, and luggage from a recent trip. Contrary to the common myth, cleanliness is not a determining factor when it comes to bed bug infestations. All that is required for bed bugs to thrive is an abundance of cracks in which to hide and the presence of warm-bodied hosts. A sure sign of bed bugs is when you see tiny reddish-brown bugs along the seams and crevices of your mattress, small blood stains on your mattress, and most obviously, if you start waking up with bruises and red bite marks on your body.
