Toronto often finds itself perched at the top of various best-of lists. In recent years The Big Smoke has been voted one of the top cities to live and work in the world, with the some of the best restaurants in the country.

But theres little to brag about when it comes to the latest list weve topped. According to pest control provider, Orkin Canada, were number one when it comes to bed bugs.

Toronto topped all Canadian cities when it came to the number of commercial and residential bed bug treatments carried out by Orkin.

Heres the top 10:

The dubious honour may not come as a surprise to some. Bed bugs have been spotted in Toronto Public Library books, on the TTC, and in numerous rental and vacation properties. According to the bed bug registry, there are currently 2270 reports for the critters across the city.

If Peterborough: Where Roads and Rivers Meet wasn't good enough for a city slogan/tagline, how about Peterborough: Where Beds and Bugs Don't Meet?

Peterborough ranked tops in Canada as the city with the fewest bed bug problems in a nationwide ranking of 25 Canadian cities released Tuesday.

The ranking of 25 Canadian cities was released by pest-control provider Orkin Canada, based on the number of residential and commercial bed bug treatments the company performed between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.

Even without including Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke, Toronto had the most bed bug cases, followed by Winnipeg in second, Vancouver in third and Ottawa fourth. Oshawa was 17th.

Bed bugs thrive in cool, dark places and, while rare, can be found on planes, trains and automobiles.

The critters could be present if you see any of these signs: dead bugs, spots of blood stains, or eggs in the crevice of folds of a mattress or sheets, any sort of soft furnishings and even framed photos. A clean room does not prevent bed bugs as two bugs can lay up to 10 eggs in a single day.

Those who are travelling are advised to keep their luggage elevated and away from linens and fabrics. If you suspect your luggage may have been carrying bed bugs following a trip, put all the clothing in the dryer at the highest appropriate temperature as heat is the only way to kill the bugs.

Apartment bedbug infestation persists after treatments – FOX31 Denver

AURORA, Colo. -- Bedbugs are creating an ongoing nuisance for tenants at a northwest Aurora apartment building as landlords across the country find it difficult to properly exterminate the pests.

Studies from this year indicate bedbugs are becoming more resistant to pesticides.

When I moved here, my son and I enjoyed it, Stapleton Apartments tenant Max Vaughns said. We [were] having fun.

But over the past three months, Vaughns said he has spent some nights in his truck to get away from bedbugs.

Pictures show what Vaughns claims are evidence of bedbug bites and his young sons allergic reaction.

Written notice of entry into Vaughns apartment at 2201 Dayton St. explains pest control crews treated the apartment on more than one occasion. Each time, Vaughns said, nothing was resolved.

Exterminators said killing the bugs is a difficult job. Roughly 3,500 homes are treated for bedbugs in the Denver area every year, according to exterminators.

Tenants at Stapleton Apartments said management has admitted that Vaughns is not alone.

Vaughns, upset the issue hasnt been resolved, said he has stopped paying rent and is facing eviction.

He plans to be out of his unit within one week. Meanwhile, hes hoping his story will serve as a warning for anyone searching for an apartment.

I just want to make sure that others are aware of whats going on, Vaughns said.

A representative for the apartment management said like other apartment buildings in the state, Stapleton Apartments has been struggling with bedbugs compared to previous years.

A spokesman said aheat treatment that is typically successful is used on units with infestations.
