Bed bugs can become a problem for any size hotel, and despite the clientele. Business travelers can carry the bugs just as easily as familys or budget travels. They can happen anywhere. It is not about the cleanliness of the hotel or bed.

There is no quick fix for eradication. There are both chemical and non-chemical approaches are available and a combination of both is most useful. The EPA has extensive tips for how to eradicate the bugs from your establishment. You can see them here.

Hotels and motels that suspect an infestation are advised to take the suspected room out of service until bed bugs have been eliminated or inspection reveals that the initial report was incorrect. A facility should also shut down the surrounding rooms, and the rooms on the floors above and below, until they have all been treated. Then the staff should test and re-test days the rooms days and weeks after.

To date, the State doesnt have a protocol for closing hotels or motels that have bed bugs or classification for them as a public safety issue. This is because, unlike black mold for example, it isnt solely the purview of the hotel as it is brought in by the guests and visitors can continue to bring in the pests.

Bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed. However, that is not always the case. The life cycle stage and time of the last blood meal determines the size, shape and color of individual bed bugs.

The Environmental Health Services Division of the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department points out that a newly hatched bed bug is about the size of a poppy seed and Semi-transparent. Adult bed bugs take on the reddish-brown coloring typically associated with bed bugs and the size of an apple seed.

Do not simply look for bed bugs on your mattress. Look on the box springs and seams of all bedding. Check dresser drawers, along cracks, crevices and joints of all furniture. Some Texas residents or travelers may not initially realize that their apartment or hotel room has bed bugs because bed bugs even hide along and behind switch plates and electrical outlets. Check along baseboards and behind pictures hanging on your wall. You may find both bed bugs and their shed exoskeletons.

After testing revealed that three of the 89 samples tested positive for Hepatitis B, it was then determined The bedbug must be considered a potential vector of hepatitis-B virus.

More recently, researchers at Penn Medicine Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics discovered that bed bugs, Can transmit Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, one of the most prevalent and deadly diseases in the Americas.

The Penn Medicine News Release quoted Renzo Salazar, biologist at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia and co-author of the study, who stated, Ive never seen so many parasites in an insect.

Early diagnosis of Chagas disease can prove difficult. However, in later stages an individual can suffer sudden heart failure or even sudden death due to complications from Chagas disease.

Bed bugs in Ontario: A priority for public health?

Public Health Ontario scientists conducted an updated systematic review on the health effects of bed bugs.

What they found in their review was quite interesting: While bed bugs remain a huge public concern, and have a certain gross factor, there is little evidence to suggest that tracking bed bugs should be an important priority for public health officials. Why? Although bed bug bites can become infected, bed bugs are not responsible for transmission of diseases such as hepatitis or AIDS. Their actual impact on health is quite minimal, though bites are unpleasant.

Commissioned at request of Chief Medical Officer of Health, the systematic review sought to provide the best available epidemiological evidence in support of public health policy decision-making in Ontario. This finding, then, raises the question: Should public health officials with limited budgets invest more time and money in a bed bug surveillance system for what is, essentially, a nuisance? Notably, Ontario has not yet made a decision on a province-wide surveillance system of bed bugs.

Based on the evidence review and after consultation with colleagues in health units, PHO offered the following options to support ongoing provincial efforts on bed bug control and management:

Data links to existing administrative databases such as medical service database and hospital discharge databases

Creation of a government-financed bed bug registry

Routine surveys, either a new stand-alone provincial-wide survey or being a part of an existing health survey such as the Rapid Risk Factor Surveillance System (RRFSS)

Surveillance based on pest control industry databases, calls to local public health units, requests for support received by Community and Social Services of Ontario, participation from health care providers and calls to TeleHealth Ontario

No formal surveillance

Found Bites, But No Bugs Got Bed Bugs? Bedbugger Forums

I've never had bed bugs before, so I'm a total newbie here. Yesterday I woke up with a line of three small, red bites on my stomach that match the description of bed bug bites- I've heard about the whole "breakfast, lunch and dinner" pattern, so when I saw that there was a line of three, I immediately freaked. I called in sick to work and spent the day doing laundry, and brought my vacuum cleaner in for a long-overdue repair. I also picked up a spray bottle of stuff called EcoBugFree- the active ingredients are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Chloride and Potassium Sorbate.

Yesterday I washed all my bedding and some clothing, and sprayed the mattress and bed frame/headboard/etc. with the EcoBugFree. After awhile I also sprayed everything with isopropyl alcohol, on a friend's recommendation. I had hoped that that would do the trick, but this morning I woke up with more bites, also around my waist, but this time closer to my back. I also noticed three or four other similar marks in the same region of my body, but I'm not sure if they happened Sunday night or last night. I'm hoping that, if they are bed bug bites, that it's just one bug that might have stowed away on me (maybe at a party I went to Saturday night, or simply riding the subway), and that I'll be able to kill it before it multiplies.

***My BIGGEST CONCERN is my cat. If you have resolved a bed bug problem and are a cat owner, especially if your cat sleeps in your bed with you (mine does), please advise as much as you can. Also, I live in a studio apartment, so it's not possible to shut my cat out of the bedroom or anything like that.***

The next steps I plan to take are vacuuming, applying DE, and I was also going to experiment with making some masking tape or duct tape barriers to catch the little sucker. I was thinking that tonight I would sleep on the bare mattress, with duct tape all around the edge, basically acting as human bait. I'm also going to continue applying the EcoBugFree and alcohol, as much as is possible without getting the DE wet.

It's also important to mention that I haven't actually seen ANY bugs, or sign of bugs. The problem with trying to find it, my bed sheets are dark red, so bloodstains don't show up, and my bedframe is wood, the same color brown as a bed bug might be. It's basically the perfect set-up for a bedbug to hideout in, which is why I'm optimistic about a tape trap doing the work for me.

Any advice? Feedback? Support? Could someone please send me some Xanax? The scotch is running low.

What do bed bugs look like?

An adult bed bug is the size of an apple seed or 3/16 to 1/4 of an inch long. They are brown and usually flat unless theyve fed then they become balloon-like. Bed bug nymphs are smaller and whitish-yellow (almost translucent) in color. Nymphs are commonly mistaken for book louse nymphs. Both are light colored but the bed bug nymph has a less elongated body. It doesnt look like it has a neck, whereas the book louse does. Bed bug eggs are tiny (the size of a pinhead) and pearl white in color.

Bed bug activity is not influenced by seasonal environmental factors like other insects. They are active year-round and found everywhere in the United States. Bed bugs are especially prominent in Florida as it is a vacation destination for tourists.

A bed bugs favorite host is a sleeping human. They do not feed on the host itself, but on the blood they suck from the host. A common misconception is that bed bugs are the result of dirt or filth. They are an equal-opportunity pest, normally transported in luggage or on clothing, where they quickly invade hotel rooms and mattresses.

Bed bug bites are often slightly swollen red areas that may itch or cause irritation, much like mosquito bites and flea bites. Bed bug bites may be random or appear in a straight line. Its important to note that you may not have any redness or symptoms when a bed bug bites but you could also experience secondary skin infections from excessive scratching at the bite location.

Signs of a bed bug infestation include small blood stains on sheets and mattresses and similar stains at other locations that could be entrances to hiding places. Bed bugs are exceptional at hiding and may be found in popcorn ceilings, the rims of mattresses, under carpets and other small, dark places. It is a misconception that bed bug activity is confined to beds. Other furniture like couches and chairs may become infested as well.

After repeated bed bug bites, the human body will produce antibodies that will cause the area to itch like a mosquito bite. People who suffer numerous bites can also develop a sensitivity syndrome, which can cause nervousness, lethargy and a pale pallor. Currently, bed bugs are not known carriers of disease and are not destructive to property. Though, Bed bug infestations can result in significant stress and economic loss.

First discovered in Florida in the 1930s, tropical bed bugs have not been seen since the 1940s until recently. This strain of bed bug prefers climates that are tropical or sub-tropical, are typically found in Asia and South America, and are thought to have entered Florida via local ports such as Port Canaveral. Like regular bed bugs, they are skillful travelers however it is believed that they reproduce much faster and more frequently. What impact theyll have in Florida remains to be seen but currently it is thought that bed bug heat treatments used on regular bed bugs will be effective against this type.
