Bed bugs still a problem around the area

A recent report by the Cincinnati Health Department indicates that the number of bed bug cases is on the decline. However, State Representative Dale Mallory says he's skeptical.

"I think that the bed bug calls have declined, from what I've seen with the stigma a lot of people are afraid to report bed bug incidents," he said.

Ohio State University entomologist Dr. Susan Jones says the bed bug problem is alarming. "If you have one in five people reporting bed bugs, a 20% infestation rate, that's a serious, serious problem."

The problem was supposed to have been addressed by a bed bug task force, but Mallory says the panel seems to have lost its way.

"After about three months, from what I understand, the city abandoned that plan. The city health department abandoned that plan. So as people called City Hall they were told well we really don't deal with bed bugs, but we'll send you a brochure," he said.

Mallory says he'd like to see the infestation problem eliminated by the time Cincinnati hosts the World Choir Games in June.

University of Cincinnati biology professor Dr. George Uetz says bed bugs had nearly been eliminated back in the 50's, but pesticides used back in those days are now illegal.

Xavier University biology professor Dr. Annie Ray says the mild winter hasn't affected other types of insects.

"Things that we call peri-domestic pests like cockroaches...things that live in your house like silverfish...not really insect, but arachnids and some of those house centipedes....they're really not going to be affected by the weather," she said.

Dr. Uetz says "If it continues to be on and off wet with warm weather....I think we'll see swarming mosquitoes and swarming flies."

More bed bug cases turning up in Waco

By Danielle Skinner

WACO- There are now more warnings about the rise in bed bug cases. On Thursday night the Heart of Texas Apartment Association held a special meeting to alert apartment managers and tenants about the problem.

Until three years ago the saying "Goodnight, don't let the bed bugs bight," was taken lightly in Waco. Now this warning is being taken serious.

It's a real concern for me, it's a real concern that we are going to have a pretty bad infestation brewing here under our noses and we don't even realize it," said Bob Howard.

Howard is President of Bugsdotcom. It'sa pest extermination company that specializes in getting rid of these nasty critters.

Howard says in 2010 his company got bed bug complaints four times a year. In 2011, complaints would come in once a month. Now every week his band of exterminators are sent into homes to get rid of these blood-sucking nightmares.

Now the problem has gotten the attention of the Heart of Texas Apartment Association. They asked Howard to be a guest speaker tonight at their meeting to warn apartment managers about the rise of the bed bug boom.

"So we just want to make sure the residents are aware of it, and they show us how we can check for them when we go and do our regular inspections," said HTAA President Elizabeth Bryant.

At tonight's meeting Howard told an audience full of disgusted tenants and managers that bed bugs come from people traveling overseas. These bugs will often hitch hike a ride back to the states.

Buying furniture from garage sales and used furniture stores can also be a source, so examine the furniture before you buy. Howard also warned apartment managers the dangers in neglecting to exterminate bed bugs. The tenants will leave, but the bed bugs will stay.

REPORT: Cincinnati ranks #1 for bed bugs

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Cincinnati maintains its position as the #1 city for bed bugs, according to a report released by Orkin on Friday.

1. Cincinnati 2. Chicago 3. Detroit 4. Denver 5. Los Angeles 6. Columbus, Ohio 7. Dallas 8. Washington, D.C. 9. New York City 10. Richmond, VA

"The changes in some cities' rankings show bed bugs continue to be a problem in most areas of the U.S.," said Orkin entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison, Ph.D. "Several of the top 50 cities have large, busy airports, and there could be a correlation between increased travel and bed bug activity. The changes could also be because the bed bug population is increasing overall, or even because the public is becoming more aware of bed bugs and has become better adept at identifying them."

Bed bugs can multiply quickly, so early detection is critical to preventing a larger infestation. And since infestations can be difficult to control, Orkin advises vacationers to take the proper precautions before enjoying spring break activities to avoid contact with and spreading the blood-suckers.

"Bed bugs can be found in other places than the bedroom," warns Dr. Harrison. "They're great hitchhikers and tend to settle where people sleep, particularly in hotel rooms, but they can also crawl into personal belongings and make their way into planes, gyms, offices, stores and worse, your home."

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, bed bugs can carry more than 30 different human pathogens, but there is no evidence that bed bugs can transmit diseases. Their bites can, however, leave itchy welts on their victims. Red marks or swelling may also develop.

"One thing that's not a factor is sanitation," said Dr. Harrison. "Be sure to do some investigating when you arrive at your hotel, whether it's a one-star or a five-star property. Bed bugs are nocturnal and resemble apple seeds in size and color, so check mattress seams, sheets and furniture, behind baseboards, electrical outlet plates and picture frames for small reddish-brown spots and lightly-colored molted bed bug skins."

When traveling, think of the acronym S.L.E.E.P. to remember the following action steps to help avoid bringing bed bugs home with you:

Orkin says their bed bug business is up 33-percent over 2010.
