if you think your chances of getting bed bugs is slim to none - except if you pay a visit to mega-metropolitan area like New York City - think again. Right here in the Alamo City the freaky little unwanted pests are popping up.

UTSA says they have detected a few of these tiny biters on campus at the University Oaks, Chisholm Hall and Laurel Village residence facilities. They say three confirmed cases were resolved, and a fourth is currently being treated.

University officials sent out email notices to students in both the affected facilities and also to those living in unaffected residence halls.

With the health and safety of our students in mind, we are working with a local extermination firm to resolve the bed bug issue in one of our residence facilities, said Lionel Maten, UTSA director of housing and residence life. The firm has worked with universities across the region to remediate bed bug incidents and is going above and beyond our protocol in the affected facility. We anticipate resolving the issue today, March 21.

UTSA says here are some identifying signs that you too have been visited by bed bugs:

UTSA students who believe they have been bitten by bed bugs may get treatment at the UTSA Student Health Services on the main and downtown campuses.

The Texas Department of State Health Services has more information on bed bugs on their website.

Study: LA Ranks 5th Among Top Bed Bug Cities In America

(credit: STAN HONDA/AFP/Getty Images)

LOS ANGELES (CBS) Los Angeles is among the topten cities inthe nation with the most bed bugs, according to a study released Wednesday by Orkin.

Orkin announced its top 50 bed bug cities for 2011, and the City of Angelsranked fifth. Cincinnati came in at number one, followed by Chicago, Detroit and Denver.

The study ranked cities in order of the number of bed bug treatments Orkin preformed from Jan. to Dec. 2011.

Los Angeles jumped from 25th place in the 2010 rankings to fifth in 2011. New York ranked ninth, down two spots from the previous year.

In 2011, Orkins parent company, Rollins, saw a 33.6 percent increase in bed bug business compared to 2010, the study said.

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, bed bugs can carry more than 30 different human pathogens, but there is no evidence that bed bugs can transmit diseases. Their bites can, however, leave itchy welts on their victims. Red marks or swelling may also develop, the study said.

L.A. places No. 5 on list of 'Top 50 Bed Bug Cities'

The bed bugs are alive and biting in Los Angeles, so much so the city vaulted Wednesday into the top five of an exterminators Top 50 Bed Bug Cities List.

According to the pest-control company Orkin, Los Angeles climbed 25 spots to place No. 5 in its annual list of bug-infested cities.

Cincinnati and Chicago held on to the top spots, finishing No.1 and 2 respectively, but several large metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles showed increases in the number of bed-bug treatments in 2011.

The Bay Area, for example, jumped 35 spots on the top-50 list to No. 12.

I think everybody in the county ought to be concerned, Harrison said. You have to be cautious where you travel and not stay in hotels where you have bed bugs. The worry isnt as much about getting bit as it is about bringing them into the home.

Harrison said bed bugs carry human pathogens and can leave itchy welts on victims but do not carry diseases. He estimatedOrkin has treated thousands of homes and businesses in California, and the company owns only about a 20% market share.

Orkins study reportedthe bed-bug extermination business was up 33.6% last year. Harrison said treatments in Los Angeles range from several hundred dollars to more than $1,000.

If you find yourself in a situation with an infestation, its not pleasant, he said. Changing your life for months is not fun.

The Northern California cities of Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto were grouped together for the study and collectively finished 41st. It was the third and final California area on the top 50 list.

San Diego Lets the Bed Bugs Bite

Pest control company Orkin has released their annual list of the most bed bug-ridden cities in the U.S. and it turns out San Diego lets the bed bugs bite -- but not as much as other cities.

Orkin ranked Americas Finest City number 26 on the list, which is based on the number of bed bug treatments the company performed in 2011.

The top spot for bed bugs went to Cincinnati, Ohio. Chicago took home second place, while Detroit came in third for bed bug infestation and Denver ranked fourth.

Los Angeles took the fifth spot on the list, up a whopping 20 spots from last year, when it came in at number 25. Dallas/Fort Worth took 7th place, a drastic change from 50th place last year.

Perennial bed bug hotspot New York City dropped two places to ninth, while the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area took the 12th spot.

Overall, the number of bed bug incidents climbed 33.6-percent over the previous year.

"The changes in some cities' rankings show bed bugs continue to be a problem in most areas of the U.S.," said Orkin entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison.

"Several of the top 50 cities have large, busy airports, and there could be a correlation between increased travel and bed bug activity."

To avoid bringing bed bugs home from a trip, Orkin advices travelers to remember the acronym S.L.E.E.P.

It stands for the following: Survey bed surfaces for small, rust-colored spots on the sheets. Lift and look for pesky bed bugs in hiding spots such as underneath the mattress or furniture, Elevate luggage or a rack or chair, away from the bed. Examine luggage carefully while repacking. Place all clothing from luggage immediately in the dryer for at least 15 minutes on the highest setting as soon as returning home from a trip.
