Get Garcia, Get Results: International Adoption in Jeopardy

An Arcadia mother was trying to adopt a disabled boy who lived with her family for years when an apparent clerical error threatened to derail the process. Ana Garcia reports for NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Sept. 20, 2012

To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade?: iPhone 5 Storage Space

With the Friday release of Apple's iPhone 5, users are facing a quandary: to upgrade or not to upgrade? Senior analyst Wayne Lam says each 16 gigabytes of memory costs Apple about $10, but consumers pay closer to $100 for each upgrade -- a 10-fold increase. Ana Garcia reports for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on Sept. 21, 2012.

They are the easiest pests to bring home and one of the toughest to eliminate: bed bugs. And theyve catapulted Los Angeles to the top of an unsavory list.

In 2011, LA was one of the five most infested cities in the country and for the throngs of Angelenos who rent their homes, getting rid of the tiny bugs can be even tougher.

Still, renters have rights. Tormented by bed bugs, Claudine Penedo and Georgia Shiner called on the NBC4 Get Garcia Team to investigate the infestation.

I flip my cases over, I flip my bed over, every day, every night and I still get bit, Penedo said.

Its so frustrating and stressful, I cant even have people in my home, she said. I feel like a leper.

When the single mother moved into her Valley Village apartment in January she had no idea that the woman living below her had been battling bed bugs for nearly three years.

Ministers worried about apartments

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A group of Indianapolis ministers wants the owner of a troubled apartment complex to be evicted. The Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance calls the apartment complex a "deplorable breeding ground for trouble and destitution."

Keystone North Apartments formerly known as the Phoenix Apartments are located about a mile north of the Indiana State Fairgrounds along Keystone Avenue.

The Ministerial Alliance says billionaire Warren Buffett and his team have expressed interest in revamping the complex. One year ago, Buffett poured millions of dollars into the same neighborhood.

The Ministerial Alliance crafted a letter in July to the owner of the complex from Connecticut. In the letter, the group calls for the owner to "cease and desist" ownership of the apartments. They call for the owner to either sell it or spend the millions it will take to bring it up to standards.

The letter says the residents of the apartment complex have told them about an infestation of rats, cockroaches, bed bugs and other pests at the apartment complex. They also complained about mold, lead-based paint, asbestos and health and fire code violations. The ministers say the tenants feel like prisoners in their own homes because of the "shootings, stabbings, open-air drug dealing and fighting" that are all too frequent.

"We don't want it shut down. We want those people to have a roof over their head. We want them to have a quality place to live," said Dr. Michael Bluitt of the Ministerial Alliance.

24-Hour News 8's Adrienne Broaddus spoke to ten residents at the complex Tuesday. None of the residents were willing to talk on camera but all agreed something needs to change.

One woman said, "This is bed bug palace. It's not the best, but I can't go anywhere else."

Two of the residents we spoke to said fights happen every day. While we were on scene, police responded to an issue near the back of the complex. The residents also told us that Sheriff's deputies normally patrol the area. One woman said that in order to enter the property, you must show proof of residency. If you don't, you risk being arrested for trespassing.

The ministers, however, point to investment that has been made to improve the neighboring Avondale Meadows. They believe the blight of the Keystone North Apartments are blocking progress to improve the overall community.

Bed bugs send a St. Petersburg woman packing

Tammie Fields Video Stories More Tammie Fields Stories

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -On June 4,10 News showed you the problem at MLF Towers located in Downtown St. Petersburg. Residents were complaining ofbeing bitten while they were sleeping. Some even had to get entirely new wardrobes becausethe bed bugs had crawledinto their clothes.

Butit's not just there --10 News has now received reports of bed bugs spreading across the street from MLF Towers to the Lutheran Apartments on 1st Avenue South and all the way to City Place Senior Living at 298 8th St. North in St. Petersburg.

84-year-old Jane Martin says she misses her apartment at the complex. "It was heartbreaking. I had a beautiful apartment." But she says what she doesn't miss is her uninvited guests.

She says, "I got up to go to the bathroom and I looked at my bed, saw the bugs, put them in a bottle, took them down to the office and showed them."

Martin says that was two weeks ago and even though the apartment complex hired a professional to treat her apartment, she says the bed bugs became unbearable. "I couldn't go to bed. I had to sleep in a chair for about 10 days."

But Friday was her breaking point. "Over the weekend, I must have filled a dumpster downstairs throwing stuff out. Clothes, blankets, sheets, everything."

Martin says she felt she had no choice but to pack up and move out. She wishes the apartment management had been more aggressive about beating back the bed bugs. "I was very disappointed."

City Place Senior Living is only about two years old. Mayor Bill Foster was at the grand opening since the City of St. Petersburg provided a half a million dollar low interest loan so that itcouldbe built.

10 Newsis hoping for comment fromapartment managers about the allegations in the coming days.

New research shows bed bugs are not disease spreaders

The research of two Mississippi medical professionals Dr. Richard deShazo and Dr. Jerome Goddard brought the nation some welcome news in 2009: Bed bugs leave nasty bites that are hard to treat but no evidence exists to indicate they spread disease.

Tiny bed bugs will suck your blood but do they carry disease?

Their article appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association and landed them a spot on NBCs The Today Show.

Until the review by deShazo, chairman of the University of Mississippi Medical Center Department of Medicine, and Goddard, a Mississippi State University an entomology professor, little was known about the risks associated with bed bug bites.

Three months ago, deShazo and Goddard published a paper in the American Journal of Medicine on treating the blistering psychological effects of bed bug attacks.

In the 2009 article, their research determined bed bugs do not transmit dangerous diseases such as HIV or hepatitis. Even today, though, deShavo is not entirely sure the parasitic bed bugs are entirely free of pathogens.

We have to keep a close eye on this, he said.

One problem in assessing bed bug bites, according to deShazo, is that many bite victims have no reaction at all. Many others will get only a brief itch.

But people who develop allergies to them or are bit repetitively get these skins reactions that persist for weeks.

We use to miss them because it was such an unusual thing. But now we look for them when people come in with a rash.
