MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma -

News 9 is hearing from some people who say their apartment complex is infested with bugs and even dangerous mold. This is happening right now in Midwest City.

The frustrations with mold, bed bugs and roaches have residents so fed up, and things took an ugly turn on Monday. We drove up in the midst of an altercation between management and tenants that police had to settle.

The Smiths say they've lived in filth for months after dozens of calls to property management. Nadene Smith called news 9 to say her son is suffering. Their apartment isn't the only one.

Residents tell us the insect infestation at the Silverwood Apartments has been an ongoing problem. The issues don't end in the bedroom, black bold and foul odors float through units.

"They come and fix the mold underneath the sink. Once it came back, I told them about it, they come back and I told them about it again, they said they will get to it, that is five months ago," Smith said.

Now, Smith is 8-months pregnant.

The property manager refused to be interviewed on camera but gave News 9 a hand-written statement which reads,

"Management at Silverwood Apartment is aware of the situation and is taking the proper steps to remedy the problem."

Property manager at Silverwood told News 9 maintenance crews will be here Wednesday to fix the problems, meanwhile several residents are looking to move.

Officials: Bedbugs force York County work release prisoner furlough

Bedbugs are forcing York County Prison inmates out of their work release housing "trailers" until the areas can be treated, according to Carl Lindquist, York County spokesman.

About 90 work release prisoners will be allowed to stay with friends or family while the trailers are sprayed for the bugs later this week, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

The minimum-security prisoners are permitted by a judge to leave the facility for employment and sometimes receive furloughs for funerals or other personal events.

A broader furlough, approved by order of the York County Court of Common Pleas, will take place between Thursday and Sunday mornings, the release states.

The furlough, which does not affect female work-release prisoners, will affect some of those who live in the work release "trailers," according to officials. The main prison building is not affected.

The presence of bedbugs was first reported 14 days ago and believed to be part of an isolated area, which was treated. An inspection by an exterminator determined the bugs had spread to other areas.

Lindquist said prison officials believe the bugs were brought in by one or more prisoners, but they are unable to track where the prisoner might have come in contact with the bugs.

The prisoners have not reported any sort of injury or illness because of the bugs, Lindquist said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, "Bed bugs should not be considered a medical or public health hazard."

The bugs are not known to spread disease, according to the CDC, and are mostly an annoyance because they can lead to excessive itching.

Lindquist said prison officials are working with the inmates to determine their plans while the trailers are being treated. If they don't have a place to stay, they will remain at the prison in a different area.

University of Florida Study Examines Potentially Harmful Effects a Bed Bug Infestation Can Have on Humans

Although bed bugs have not been shown to transmit disease, is blood loss something we should be worried about? A University of Florida study released in the Journal of Medical Entomology explores this further. BedBug Central's Technical Director Jeffrey White weights in with his thoughts as well.

Even though many have stated bed bugs are not a health risk because they cant transmit disease, this study raises questions as to whether or not those statements are accurate. In situations where a high level of bed bug infestation goes untreated, there is a greater risk for anemia. This study helps to reiterate the importance of identifying infestations and taking measures to reduce the impact bed bugs can have on humans.

These findings, combined with the recent research that bed bugs can have a measurable psychological impact on humans, may cause certain people to think twice about labeling bed bugs as a non-health risk.

One of the important things about our study was that we were able to prove that bed bug populations have a greater potential to grow than we originally thought, said Dr. Roberto M. Pereira, Associate Research Scientist at the University of Florida. Because we allowed them to feed on a daily basis, our research showed that bed bugs consumed about three times as much blood as were used to seeing. With this boost in feeding and consumption the bed bugs ended up producing three times as many eggs, therefore population growth was a lot faster than expected. This study proved to us that the potential of blood loss in humans is actually real and can get to harmful enough levels within 15 20 weeks.

Technical Director of Bed Bug Central Jeffrey White weighs in with his thoughts. It has long been thought that if you have enough bed bugs present they may be able to take enough blood to cause a health risk. This study gives us a time frame to keep any eye on in regards to when an infestation may be at a risky level. The next step would be to conduct a follow up experiment in an actual infestation to see if this model actually correlates with what happens in the field.

Seeing that it appears bed bugs are back and here to stay knowledge is the best weapon in staying protected from infestations.
