Bed Bug Dust – Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Natural Solution

One of the most popular and environmentally safe ways to kill bed bugs is by using bed bug dust AKA Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE), also called bed bug dust. DE is a fancy name for fossilized water plants (algae-like plants called diatoms) that are ground to a fine dust and used to kill bed bugs. Its popular because when placed in a spray bottle (duster such as a plastic ketchup container) and dusted into infestations, you avoid paying added fees for commercial (and often toxic) pest control solutions. You can find this product at almost any feed and supply store or online from a number of companies.

Tip: Are you sure you have bed bugs but being told you dont or cant find them? Read how Mimi found bed bugs using a bug sniffing dog when the pest control companies could find them!

Warning! The diatomaceous earth you find at the pool supply store is NOT what you want to use! You want Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth which is a safe all natural pest control which you can find at your local feed store; you can also look for Fossil Shell Flour at other stores.

Another Warning! Bed bug dust (DE) works by absorbing lipids from the waxy outer layer of their exoskeleton causing the bugs to die from dehydration; this absorbent quality will also cause significant drying of your hands if applied without gloves. It is also dangerous to breathe, so MAKE SURE TO WEAR A DUST MASK!

This is a completely natural, environmentally safe way to win the war against bed bugs (also called chinches), so let let me explain how it works.

When the bug comes in contact with DEs microscopic razor sharp edges, their protective covering becomes damaged; without protection and exposed to the elements, the bug becomes dehydrated and quickly dies.

How to Apply Bed Bug Dust (DE)

Youll need three weapons. First, create a mixture of %40 alcohol (ethyl alcohol works), %40 water and %20 dish soap [the spray]. Second, youll need to place your diatomaceous earth in a duster [the dust] and third, youll need a powerful vacuum with attachments used for sucking loose bedbugs out of their hiding places.

Bedbugs love to hide and do a great job at it! If you read the comments throughout my site, youll see case after case where the victim went months without finding signs only to discover later that there was an infestation right next to them! Know where to look, see my bed bug checklist; Ill cover some of their hiding places below.

Phase One Cleaning: We need to clean, and good. Wash bedding and surrounding material with hot water that is at least 120 degree in temperature. Items such as pillows, toys, extra blankets should be cleaned and sealed in plastic bags for further decontamination later.

Bed Bug Report for Hotel Helix, Washington, DC

Bummed on 09/28/2012

I submitted the post below. I was incorrect and didnt want to slander this hotel falsely. I had aquired them a week earlier in NY. Sorry for the negative post.

bummed on 09/24/2012

I was staying with a large group in the Helix for the second and third week in September 2012. We were all on different floors. I was on the third floor. After the second week, a rumor was going around that there were bed bugs in some of our rooms. I discounted it as a mistake because my room appeard to be ok. Upon returning to my house which has never had an issue, I started having a problem. I live alone and my house was vacent for weeks. All of the sudden I now have bed bugs. And I am certain

it was something I brought home from the Helix. I am never staying there again.

Anonymous on 08/21/2012

I stayed in Room 712 in August 2012. I had absolutely no bed bugs in my room. This hotel was very clean. (I have experience with bedbugs so I would have known if I'd been bit- I am allergic to bed bugs!)

Do this for a living on 05/25/2012

I feel the need to respond to the 2 previous guest comments regarding rooms 1009 and 703. The Hotel Helix is my account, I am the Steritech specialist mentioned in 1009. My training is extensive in bed bugs and I deal with them on a regular basis. Any time The Helix has any complaint of bed bugs I am called in immediately. I personally inspected both of the above mentioned rooms and found no bed bugs or evidence of bed bugs. I feel confident in my findings (or lack there of)and I find it sad tha

t a disgruntled hotel guest can go online and try a ruin a hotels reputation.

Bed Bug Information From The Pest Control Pros In RI, MA And CT

Bed bugs are small insects that feed entirely on human blood. They were nearly eradicated from the US at one point, but due to stricter regulations on chemicals used in pesticides and increases in international travel, bed bugs are making a strong comeback.

Bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed. They are flat and oval shaped and are reddish brown in color. Bed bug nymphs will look like smaller versions of the adults. The eggs are all white and extremely small. They are very difficult to detect with the naked eye.

Yes. Bed bugs are nocturnal, which means they hide during the day and are active at night. They usually hide close to a food source; under the sheets, behind headboards, behind outlet covers and other undisturbed places. At night they come out and feed on human blood.

Bed bugs are not known to carry or transmit any diseases to humans. However, their bite often results in an itchy, red welt on the skin. These bites often are in straight lines and several bites in a row.

If you are waking up in the morning with insect bites that you did not have when you went to bed, there is a good chance you have bed bugs. Other common signs include:

Small spots of blood on your pillow or sheets - These are leftover from nighttime feedings.

Caste bed bug skins - As bed bugs grow they shed their old, empty skins.

Small, white eggs Bed bug eggs are very small and hard to see, but if you find small, white insect eggs, they could point to a bed bug problem.

If you find these, or any other signs that make you think you may have a bed bug problem, call your local pest control professional today! Big Blue Bug Solutions has been providing effective and responsible solutions to bed bug problems in Rhode Island for over 75 years. Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers. The bed bugs in your home most likely caught a ride in your luggage, in your briefcase, on used furniture, or even on your clothes. Bed bugs can be found anywhere. They are commonly encountered in cabs, on the bus, in airplanes, in motels and in thrift shops or other places that sell used clothing. Contrary to popular belief, bed bugs are not a sanitation issue; you can just as easily get bed bugs at a five star hotel as you can at the run down, side-of-the-road motel down the street.

North Carolina’s misguided Landlord/Tenant Bed bug Liability …

The North Carolina Senate will be considering a bill in 2012 that would have a huge impact on how landlords and tenants deal with bed bugs and who pays for treatment in the state.

H721, also known as the Landlord/Tenant/Bedbug Liability bill, passed in the North Carolina House in June. I have some concerns about its provisions.

The bill would prohibit landlords from renting a unit known to be infested by bed bugs. However, if the landlord gets an inspection from a licensed inspector, prior to leasing the unit, with a written report stating no bed bug evidence was found, then the landlord wont be liable if a problem is discovered later.

If the landlord does not get an inspection before renting the unit, and then a tenant complains bed bugs are present within 60 days of renting the unit, the landlord must hire someone to treat within five days of this complaint. All neighboring units must also be inspected.

Landlords must also provide educational materials about bed bugs to new tenants.

The bill also requires tenants to refrain from knowingly introducing bed bugs to the unit, stating: tenants shall not knowingly or recklessly introduce onto the premises any person or thing infested with bedbugs.

Tenants must notify landlords in writing within five days of suspecting they may have bed bugs.

If the landlord got an inspection before the tenant moved in, or if more than sixty days have passed since the tenant moved in, the tenant must pay all costs of bed bug treatment hiring a firm within seven days.

This tenant would also need to cover any fees charged by the licensee [PCO] and any damages associated with the presence and elimination of bedbugs from the premises and any attached units and spaces.

[Emphasis added.]
