Bed bugs in Washington, D.C.? Yes! And growing in number …

The Washington City Paper has a cover story today on bed bugs! In it, Audrey Dutton reports on the status of bed bugs in that city, and on the citys plans to fight the problem.

We have known there were lots of bed bugs in D.C. for a long time. The Norwood Apartments tenants we mentioned back in 2007 have been battling them for years, with 10 units still infested, according to Dutton.

We havent heard from the ladies of D.C.s Phillis Wheatley YWCA in a while, but I fear they may still be infested too.

And so this is very good to hear: the citys Department of Health is taking a keen (and hands-on) interest in bed bugs. The article notes:

Gerard Brown, who heads the departments rodent-control division, first spotted an issue with bedbugs in June. Ever since, these tiny pests have eaten up a sizable chunk of his anti-vermin portfolio.

Browns people operate under a different set of rules from the [D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, which enforces the city's housing code] instead of monitoring the infestations, the Department of Health can actually treat them and does so regularly in homeless shelters. It tries various methods to educate the public, including working with neighborhood groups to get the word out. Its also been tracking reports since June.

When we realized that it was a beginning to be a problem, then with the support of the mayors office and our directors office, I started doing research, says Brown.

So far Brown has taken calls on more than 50 properties. Almost one-fifth of those are hotels. The rest are single-family homes, apartment buildings, a school, and a dialysis center where a patient was infested. When Brown goes out to deliver presentations on bedbugs to community groups, senior housing centers, halfway houses, or property managers, he hears even more reports, he says. He was approached by a government worker whose own apartment building was totally infested.

Since the Department of Health is involved in dealing with bed bugs, they are developing a keen understanding of the reasons bed bugs are spreading and why theyre so tenacious, especially in multi-unit dwellings. Dutton reports,

One of the reasons for the bugs ubiquity in multi-unit dwellings is that that property owners dont want to pay to treat multiple units. So bugs in the unit that exterminators are paid to treat just pick up and move next door, or upstairs or downstairs. Two weeks later, a fresh crop of baby bugs hatches and settles into its new home.

What Are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are flat, wingless, blood-sucking insects less than long. They range in color from light brown to reddish-brown. Bed bugs lay up to 540 eggs in a lifetime, and each baby can be ready to reproduce in only 21 days. Bed bugs are a nuisance pest only and are not known to spread disease.

If you have bed bugs, do not panic. Bed bugs can be contained and eliminated from your home with the proper course of action.

It is recommended to hire a pest management company to locate all bed bug hiding areas and apply a treatment that will effectively eliminate the population.

Bed bugs may originate in furniture brought from other locations.

Bed bugs may crawl through walls and enter new rooms. Lines indicate where people may transfer bed bugs to other locations of their house. Bed bugs are moved either by transferring them on their person or by moving them around in other items, such as laundry. Note: A laundry room in a different part of the house, could become a prime transfer location, as clothing from an infested room comes into contact with clothing going to other rooms.

Bedbugs are "lazy" insects. They do not run, travel long distances on their own, or fly. In fact, they may stay in the same location without food for up to one year!

Decades ago bed bugs were eliminated in the United States by certain pesticides, such as DDT, which have since been banned by the Environmental Protection Agency. Recently, with increased traveling, domestic and international, bed bug activity also began to resurge in this country as people moved around more. Although more environmental-friendly pesticides are on the market, some bed bug populations are becoming resistant to these chemicals. Until an effective pest management strategy can be developed, bed bugs are on the rise.

Bed bugs may crawl into or attach themselves to clothing, luggage, furniture, or any other item a person leaves in an infested area. Wherever this newly infested item is moved, bed bugs can make a new home and stay.

Fact: Bed bugs are on the rise! They can be found any time, anywhere, and when you least expect them. You just dont know what other people bring with them.

Bed bugs Caneel Bay Forum TripAdvisor

4. Re: Bed bugs

I have never heard of a bed bug problem at Caneel. When I googled Bedbug St. John, I found a few comments on Trip Advisor about problems at the Westin several years ago, but none at Caneel and given the tendency to complain about all manner of insects on St. John, I would think it would have come up. Tropical bedbugs are a slightly different species than temperate zone begbugs. Maybe easier to control? (you can find the most interesting information on the web!) I also found this article regarding noseeums and other insects from US Virgin Islands News, 4/23/12.

"BTW, Todd Roskin , the islands well known pest exterminator, says in the six years he;s been doing pest control on the island, hes never seen a bed bug. Thats ANOTHER way St. Johns better than New York."

Doesn't seem like something to worry about. (by the way, before you comment, the 'St. John's" above is a contraction, not the typical mistaken possessive. I read it a couple of times because it threw me, thinking it was the town.)

Bed Bug Pest Control – RI & MA Exterminator

K & A Pest Control was created to provide cost effective, results based pest control. Pest Control in not a rocket science ... even though most exterminators would have you believe that. Whether it is a bed bug, cockroach, ant or a flea you loose your sleep over we can help.

We offer a number of choices to address any bed bug problem. All of them are based on Integrated Pest Managment (IPM) and can be customized to address your needs and budget;

We thoroughly inspect the premises, starting with beds, mattresses and other furniture in your bedroom since that is where vast majority of bed bugs will be found. At this time we may also recommend inspection of adjoining units.

If our inspection confirmed bed bug infestation, before the treatment is scheduled, we will ask you to remove any items you don't want our technicians to see. In majority of situations we will bag all that is necessary only nothing else. Items that were bagged will have a detailed instructions sheet attached to them. You or your residents will not have to spend all weekend doing laundry and bagging all of your belongings. Rather than taking "carpet bombing " approach to bed bug treatment, we will strike with surgical precision. We will answer any questions unit occupant or the property manager may have.

At this point we will suggest treatment protocol we think will best suit the situation. In most cases a dry steam treatment for your mattress and box spring, upholstered furniture and edges of the carpet will be used. This will provide an immediate and very significant reduction of bed bug and bed bug egg population, and avoid unnecessary use of pesticides. Subsequently, a variety of eco friendly products or safe, state and federally approved products can be used. From liquid pesticides, combined with insect growth regulator and/or various synergists to improve efficacy of the treatment, to more natural sprays and dusts, we have all the tools needed to get the job done.

In approximately 10-14 days follow-up visit and treatment should be scheduled. The unfortunate survivors of the first treatment will be vanquished and your piece of mind restored. Some situations require more treatments before that point is reached. Each bed will be equipped with a protective and monitoring devices which will trap any bed bugs coming to or leaving your bed. Prevention is an integral part of controlling bed bug population. With so many potential sources for reinfestation, education is the best weapon. We will explain how to protect yourself and your apartment/house from these unwelcomed guests.

Whether our clients own/rent residential or commercial space, small studio apartment or a sprawling estate, sole proprietor or thousands of square feet of commercial space, K & A delivers pest solutions through sound evaluation and problem solving .
