His girlfriend left him over problems in the bedroom, a caller told Barb Ogg, of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Service.

It wasn't him.

It was the bed bugs.

Bed bug infestations have doubled locally since last year, and they're likely to double every year for some time, Ogg said.

"I probably took between 10-15 calls," in one recent week, Ogg said.

About three-fourths of the complaints come from multi-unit dwellings -- apartments, motels, retirement homes, halfway houses.

"This is the scary time of the year because school's starting and people are moving around and coming into apartments," Ogg said.

Tenants will learn later from neighbors their place had been treated for bed bugs, sometimes several times, Ogg said, and yet the problem remains.

The reddish-brown insects -- last seen in great numbers before World War II -- have rebounded nationally, infesting college dorms, hospital wings, homeless shelters and swanky hotels.

DDT, the main pesticide weapon against them, was banned in 1972 as a possible carcinogen and environmental hazard.

Bed bugs feed on humans, usually at night when they are asleep. They feed by piercing the skin with their elongated mouthparts, which consist of two stylets that normally fold under their body when at rest but fully extend during blood-meal feeding. One stylet has a groove that carries saliva into the wound, while the other has a groove through which body fluids from the host are taken in.

Motel 6 bed bugs bite child

LAKELAND, TN -

(WMC) - A young girl was bitten by bed bugs in a Mid-South motel, and her mother wants answers.

They were staying at the Motel 6 on Austin Peay Highway.

Shelby County Health officials say there have been a total of 15 bed bug complaints this year at local motels and hotels.

This motel guest learned the hard way while waiting to move into her new home.

"When we first checked in everything seemed fine," said mother Telika Howard.

Howard says she and her daughter had only spent one night as guests on April 10.

"The next morning my daughter was itching all over, and so we moved the sheets, and I saw a couple of bugs," said Howard.

When her daughter returned from school the next day Howard says she was covered in a bad red rash.

"Her face, her legs, her arms, so I took her to Methodist North hospital, and they confirmed that it was bed bug bites all over her body," she said.

A bed bug problem was discovered in a motel in Tennessee. And according to a news posted in wmctv.com dated May 01, 2014, it left a guest with bites all over. In connection with it, My Cleaning Products recommended a bed bug spray to help the public deal with the critters safe.

The post relayed that the daughter of one Telika Howard was determined as the victim of the pesky crawlies. It detailed that they stayed overnight in the said Mid-South motel while waiting to move in to their new house.

However, the morning after, Howard shared in the report that her kid started to itch all over. A visit to the hospital, it related, confirmed the bed bug bites on the kid.

Besides this case, Shelby County Health Department said that two bed bug complaints in the motel were filed before, relayed the report. It specified that the first complain was on April 14 and the second one was on April 17.
