Some state workers sent home after bedbugs found in Docking building

State workers tried not let the bedbugs bite Wednesday, after the itch-inducing insects were discovered in the Docking State Office Building and employees in the affected area were sent home.

John Milburn, spokesman for the Department of Administration, said there were reports of bugs on the third floor of the building and that facilities management, a division of the department, was investigating.

The Kansas Department of Revenue resides on the third floor. Department spokeswoman Jeannine Koranda said an exterminator confirmed Wednesday that bedbugs had been found.

Rebecca Proctor, executive director of the Kansas Organization of State Employees, said revenue employees on the third floor were told about the bedbugs in a meeting Wednesday morning. She said an employee who was in the meeting who had spoken with her indicated bedbugs were initially found before Wednesday, but that a nest had now been found in an office chair in a cubicle.

The employee who called us was really concerned about it, because its not like the bedbugs are only going to be in that cubicle, Proctor said.

Koranda initially said the department became aware of an issue on Tuesday.

What I was told was that they were alerted to it yesterday, and we brought in the exterminator, Koranda said.

Koranda then called back later to say a supervisor had identified a suspected bedbug on Monday and at that point an exterminator was contacted. She then said an exterminator examined the area on Tuesday and found bedbugs.

A Revenue employee who works on the third floor, whose name was withheld because of fears of reprisals, said the first bedbug had been found in late November. The individual said department leadership spoke to employees about the bedbug issue for the first time on Wednesday.

Proctor said she had been told by an employee that the area will be isolated in plastic and that the heat will be increased in an effort to kill the insects. Bedbugs die when their body temperature exceeds 113 degrees.

Bed Bug Report for Hyatt Regency Newport, Newport, RI

anonymous on 07/06/2012

Stayed at Newport Hyatt May 10th & 11th, 2011. Can't remember the room number. Rash on feet and legs over past few weeks. Just discovered bed bugs. Called hotel. They stated they had no problems and that it was "too long" from period of my stay.

Hyatt Regency Newport on 05/19/2012

We take bed bugs and all forms of pest issues very seriously at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Spa in Newport Rhode Island. Any sitings of pests are immediately acted upon and remedied. When we saw the post about room 516 a week after the guest had stayed here we immediately took action and called in our pest control company (Eco Lab) to inspect the room. The results were negative for any type of pest infestation. For any guest to accuse a hotel of a bed bug infestation and not report it to man

agement during their stay is beyond our comprehension.

Regards

Veterans living with bed bugs in building not zoned for residential use

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -

Bed bugs, broken doors, and a moldy bathroom describes the condition that Local 10 News found some South Florida veterans living in a Pompano Beach building zoned for "heavy business" use and recently cited for renting a unit which the violation read is an improper use.

Several were stacked in a room; another veteran was sleeping in a closet.

The veterans who spoke with Local 10 said they were placed there by the Veterans In Need Foundation, which is located on the first floor of 1350 S. Dixie Highway.

Michael Janet, a Navy combat veteran in Vietnam, told Local 10 the organization is not delivering the services it promises when it solicits money from people at rest stops all across South Florida.

"These are veterans who have served with dignity and honor and deserve better treatment," Janet said. "They deserve a clean place to sleep (and) a clean mattress to sleep. Take some of that money that is given to you and give it to the veterans, provide better living conditions, doing things that you say in this brochure."

On a Veterans In Need Foundation solicitation card obtained by Local 10, the organization writes that donations collected will provide "free temporary housing assistance for homeless veterans." Janet said he was asked by the organization's leader, Joseph Haddy, to pay more than $500 in rent from his Veteran Affairs-issued benefits check.

When Haddy "found out how much I get from my veteran's check, then I was told I need to pay $535 a month to live there," Janet said. "I asked the other veterans who received veteran's checks. Some of those guys would pay $400. He charged you what he wanted to. It wasn't no set price. I thought that was unfair. I had to move out. The bed bug infestation was so bad. It was so bad I just had to move out. I would rather sleep out under the stars out on the streets than have to sleep in a place like that."

Vietnam veteran Roger Jones told Local 10 News consumer advocate Christina Vazquez that he was currently paying $400 in rent from his $1,000 a month VA check to live in his upstairs unit. He said the four other men sharing two small bedrooms covered their rent from donations they collected from the public.

Bed bugs are biting: Can Casper stop them?

CASPER, Wyo. Christopher Stratton lives on the second floor at the Star Apartments. There is no artwork on his walls. He has no furniture, no bed. He sleeps on a military blanket and pillow on the floor. Since moving in on March 7, he claims he hasnt had a good nights sleep.

Strattons apartment is infested with bed bugs. Squished bodies of those hes killed stick to his walls. Festering open wounds cover his arms. The outlines of old bite marks are still visible on his neck.

Theyre hungry little buggers unfortunately, he said, surveying the apartment. Really, we didnt want to bring anything in.

Stratton has a girlfriend who lives at her grandparents' in Casper. She has two children. They dont bring them by the apartment.

Its hard to live that way, he said. Its not an environment that anyone should live in.

The number of reported bed bug cases in Casper is rising, according to the Casper-Natrona County Health Department. As Stratton's case demonstrates, there is little the city can do about it.

Stratton reported his case to the Health Department after a visit to the emergency room Saturday. The department took his complaint and said it would be in touch with the apartments management. He was offered this recommendation: Leave the apartment and go to the Central Wyoming Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter.

A cook at McDonald's who pays $600 a month to live at the Star Apartments, Stratton was insulted.

I have a job. Being told I should go to a homeless shelter, he said, Id rather see the problem fixed.

John Drinnon, environmental health division director for the Health Department, called Strattons case pretty alarming, but said there was not much his department could do.

Bed Bug Report for Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort …

Anonymous on 10/16/2014

My family and I recently stayed at the Wilderness Resort for a weekend vacation. I almost always inspect a hotel for bedbugs, however for this trip we didn't arrive until very late Friday evening. My niece was already sleeping in the room and our infant was ready for bed when we arrived, so we quickly got settled and went to bed. I woke up Saturday morning with two bites on my neck, which I assumed to be either spider or mosquito bites. We didn't think too much of it and went about our day.

Sunday morning I woke up with several more clusters of bites on my arm and neck. After doing research on the pattern and type of bites, we discovered they were identical to that of bedbugs.

I called first thing Monday morning to discuss the bedbug situation. The woman I spoke with stated that she would speak to housekeeping and would call me back. After waiting 24 hours with not hearing back, I decided to send an email and include pictures of my arm and neck. After about 6 hours from sending the email, I received a phone call from Josh Jones, manager at the Wilderness. He did report that there was some spotting found and one dead bug, that there was most likely a minor infestation in the room. He stated that the room had been taken out of order and was going to be heat treated and exterminated. He apologized and stated the cost of our room would be refunded to us. He also asked if there was anything additional they could do to help us out.

Kudos to the manager for admitting they had found evidence of bedbugs and for the positive customer service. Unfortunately, I just don't think I can stay here again after being through this. Even though they are following correct protocol to treat the bedbugs, I'm completely grossed out by the thought of bedbugs, especially after being bitten several times and dealing with the after effects of the bedbug bites. I'm just praying that my infant daughter doesn't have bites emerge in the next couple days or that we somehow brought any creatures back home (we made sure to launder every item we had with us, including luggage).

If you go to the Wilderness, the waterpark area was great...please though, make sure to thoroughly inspect the room prior to unpacking and sleeping in the beds.

Bitten on 01/20/2014

Stayed there January 11, 2014. Didn't even think about bedbugs for the amount we paid to stay there. First bites didn't show up for a few days, then more. Met two out of town friends there and they both had bites show up later as well, so we are sure that we all got them from the Glacier Canyon lodge at the Wildnerness - we stayed on the third floor.

Anonymous on 01/15/2014

July 18-21, 2013. We stayed in a two-bedroom condo on the fourth floor of Glacier Canyon Lodge. While we did not see bedbugs when we were there, we subsequently had an infestation in our home. While we are not 100 percent sure that they came from this hotel, it is our best guess.
