Minnesotans pride themselves on the cleanliness of their towns and cities. They should certainly take pride in these accomplishments. However, there is one threat where no amount of human cleaning can remedy the situation. That situation is bed bugs.

Bed bugs in MN have not yet reached the crisis level that it has in New York. It still needs to be addressed and quickly. Bed bugs are stealthy creatures and they cannot be combatted without a thorough knowledge of how they live, grow and reproduce. Only a pest professional bed bug extermination company can rid you of this pest. The cost of replacing mattresses, pillows, couches and carpet is astronomical. Bed bug Infestations increasing – Emporia Gazette: Center

Bed bugs are small, oval insects but they can cause big problems if they infest a home. Bedbug infestations are becoming more common across Kansas says Jennifer Skiles, environmental health director and facilities manager at the Flint Hills Community Health Center.

In the last year we are seeing Bed bugs a lot more frequently, Skiles said. All through the state it is an increasing concern.

Bed bugs frequently enter homes undetected through luggage or used furniture. Since their bodies are flat it is easy for them to nest in very small spaces. Skiles says any area the width of a credit card can serve as a hiding place for the Bed bugs. Common hiding places include bed frames, headboards, springs, couch cushions and pillows.

They hide, Skiles said. A bed bug can fit into a crack or crevice that is credit card-thin. That makes them so hard to treat because you cant bomb, you cant really spray, because if they are stuck in a little crack (where) you cant get them.

Bed bugs require human or animal blood to survive. They usually bite when people are sleeping. They feed by biting the skin and withdrawing blood through an elongated beak. The Bed bugs feed for three to 10 minutes to become engorged and then they will crawl away and hide. Bed bugs can survive a long time without a blood meal.

There is a thought that if you encase your mattress a bedbug can still survive for a month without a blood meal, Skiles said. They are very difficult to get rid of.

Skiles says that Bed bugs bite and itch. Usually, the bites are initially painless but later develop into itchy welts. Bed bugs will bite any area of skin that is exposed while sleeping. If a person wakes up with itchy areas that they didnt have when they went to sleep they may have Bed bugs.

Getting rid of Bed bugs requires a great deal of effort and expertise. Skiles says it takes relentless work. It can also be an expensive process. Bed bugs can be treated chemically but they can only be treated where bed bugs are found. If the entire area is treated then the Bed bugs will spread throughout the home.

Usually a bedbug will stay within 10 feet of a known blood meal, Skiles said. So if you have a sleeping couch they wont drift further than that. Then at night when you are sleeping they are attracted and come to you. But if you start spraying chemicals they scatter everywhere.

Another good way to treat Bed bugs is heat. This method is known to be the most expensive, but also the most effective. Bed bugs are very sensitive to heat so instead of spraying pesticides some pest control companies will use steam. Skiles says they come in and basically cook your entire house. The benefit is that it only takes one treatment because the heat will kill the larva, the eggs and the living bed bugs.

Bed bugs may be increasing in Cerro Gordo County, officials say

MASON CITY | An increasing number of Cerro Gordo County residents have called health officials about suspected bedbug infestations.

Officials say it's a good reminder for people to know what bedbugs look like and how to distinguish between them and less-invasive household insects.

"We tell people don't panic but take action," said Jenna Willems, Healthy Homes Program coordinator for the Cerro Gordo County Public Health Department.

The suspected infestations aren't verified, so health officials don't know if they are becoming more prevalent in Cerro Gordo County.

"They've been resurging (around the country) for the last couple years now," Willems said. "So in general more people are learning about them and more people are worried about them."

Bedbugs are oval, wingless insects the size of an apple seed or smaller. Their flat, reddish-brown bodies may be mistaken for ticks or small cockroaches.

They tend to concentrate around sleeping areas, but can also live inside furniture, cracks in the walls, drapery or other textiles.

The bugs don't carry diseases but their bites can swell and itch, officials say.

"The bad news is everyone is at risk for bedbugs," Willems said in statement. "The good news is everyone can play a role in limiting the spread of bedbugs."

Bed Bug

Heat Treatment

"Now servicing a 3 hour radius of omaha"

The rapid resurgence of the bed bug, Cimex lectularius L., is perhaps the hottest pest management topic of the day. Over the past few years they have caught the nation completely off guard. There has been a 500 percent increase in U.S. bed bug incidents in the last few years, and infestations have risen tenfold since 1996 in parts of London.*

Female bed bugs may lay from 200 to 500 eggs, in batches of 10 to 50. The eggs are covered with a glue and hatch in about 10 days. There are five progressively larger nymphal stages, each require a single blood meal before molting to the next stage. The entire life cycle from egg to adult requires anywhere from 5 weeks to 4 months, depending on temperature. Bed bugs can go without feeding for 80 to 140 days. Adults have survived without food for as long as 550 days. A bed bug can take six times its weight in blood and feeding can take 3 to 10 minutes. Adults live about 10 months and there can be up to 3 to 4 generations of bed bugs per year.** Temperatures of about 120F are lethal to most insects provided they cannot escape to a cooler location.

BED BUGS!!! – Review of Magnuson Hotel Hattiesburg …

My family and I came to Hattiesburg to visit family for thanksgiving and decided to stay at LaQuinta versus our regular hotel that we usually stay in, unfortunately. The hotel smelled of paint which was refreshing since they obviously have renovated recently, however when we got to our room we were HIGHLY disappointed! The bed sheets not only barely fit the bed, but also were the only material covering a BARE mattress. When we sat on the bed the sheet would pop off to expose an old used mattress, which pretty much made my skin crawl. THEN, I replaced the sheet onto the mattress only to have it pop off again-------RELEASING BED BUGS!!!! Needless to say, we jumped up, packed up, and RAN out of the room! I've stayed in many hotels in my life, and never have I had a bed bug experience. YUCK! My husband went to complain and let them know we, of course, wanted a refund. The front desk personnel didn't seem surprised AT ALL, as if they already new that they had a bed bug problem. She apologized and was kind, but again, not surprised in the least, and went on to say that they have new management and trying to get things straight around the hotel. A new manager isn't an excuse for a bed bug problem! Why are they renting those rooms if they KNOW they have bed bugs? STAY AWAY from LaQuinta!
