Bed Bugs | Angies List

A bed bug is a parasitic insect from the Cimicidae family known to wreak havoc in bedrooms around the world. The common bed bug, known as Cimex lectularius in the scientific community, feasts on human blood and takes its name from its preferred living space YOUR BED.

The tiny bugs are red or brown in color and have a flat, oval-shaped body. Adults can grow up to 5 millimeters in length.

Bed bugs thrive in climates similar to human beings. Although bed bugs cannot fly, they are fast movers around floors and walls.

Bed bugs use their stylet fascicle to pierce the skin of their hosts to extract blood, often without being detected. As a result, many people experience skin rashes, allergies and other infections from bed bug exposure.

Aggressive efforts after World War II nearly wiped out the common bed bug 60 years ago.The invasive pest re-emerged around the world, but nobody's quite sure why. Experts suspect increased travel, lack of public awareness and resistance to modern pesticides all play a role.

The good news about bed bugs is they are not a serious health threat. Their bites can cause large red marks and swelling in some people, but they are not known to transmit diseases.

Fortunately, exterminators are trained to eliminate bed bugs through various techniques, from chemicals to steam to freezing.

Native Indian Remedy to Get Rid of Bed Bugs | eHow

Follow

Cimicidae, commonly known as bed bugs, are parasites that feed on the blood of warm-blooded bodies. They are called bed bugs because human homes, and beds in particular, are their abode of choice. American households are suffering with the recent upsurge of this major predicament. When it comes to getting rid of bed bugs safely, you can rely on some native Indian remedies still effective after centuries of use.

There are various types of bed bugs. What they have in common is that none of them are pleasant. Cimex lectularius is the most commonly found bug, which thrives on the blood of birds, bats and poultry alongside human blood. Other kinds infest bats, primarily. But all types will infest homes if they get the chance.

Bed bug bites have a wide range of effects, ranging from no effect at all to mild irritation, skin infections and lasting blisters. One thing is certain: if you have a bed bug infestation at your home, you will want to get rid of it soon. Research shows bed bugs are now resistant to most pesticides and DDT, which is why some native Indian remedies still prove effective compared to modern chemical fumigation.

The use of smoke by the native Indians to drive away pests and bugs is almost as old as time itself. Bed sheets, mattresses, blankets, rugs, clothes and other items are exposed to smoke. Water is sprinkled over the smoke to make it heavier for greater impact and the smoke is fanned to produce more smoke.

Another defense native Indians use against bed bugs is mint leaves -- a natural insect repellent. Fresh mint leaves are crushed and spread around sleeping quarters to repel bed bugs. These can also be dried, crushed and sprinkled around beds and rugs to keep away bugs. Rubbing mint oil over the skin also effectively repels bed bugs.

Cedar wood is another natural element effective against this troublesome pest. Cedar wood smoke drives away bed bugs. Applying cedar oil over bed posts keeps the bug army effectively at bay. The scent of cedar is the agent that wards off bed bugs and is used plenty by the Indians in their war against bed bugs.

Black walnut is a common antidote used by Native Americans. The plant is commonly found and has a multitude of uses. Its bark, leaves and fruit rind have therapeutic effects and not only have astringent and laxative properties but also are effectively used as an insecticide against bed bugs.

Bed Bug Relief – How To Treat Bed Bugs

Ever encountered the situation where your bed sheets are stained with small spots of blood and you wondering how can this be when there are no cuts or bruises over your body. Well you may very well be under the attack of the tiny warriors known as bed bugs. Wait do not panic. As there is a solution for every problem you encounter so there is a solution to wipe these small creatures out of your house. On the market today there are some of the best bed bug pesticides. These pesticides can help you lead a bed bug free life, that is provided you have a little patience to read the following few paragraphs. Bed bugs are a huge problem not only in rural areas but also in the posh urban localities too. The first measure you have to take once you realize that your house has been infested with these creepy crawly creatures is to buy a good bed bug pesticide available in any supermarket or even hardware store. Once armed with this weapon you are just about a few hours away from the victory of eradicating these pests off your living space. Before you start, the house has to first be cleared of clutter completely and the room where you are going to use the bed bug pesticide has to be virtually emptied. This means that you will be required to move the furniture, cot, tables, and movable cupboards all to another room first before using the bed bug pesticide. Then the instructions on the can or bottle of pesticide have to be read carefully. Read the guidelines and if they have any requirements like wearing gloves or a mask, they have to be complied with. Once you are all set you can now spray the bed bug pesticide all through the room and mainly concentrate on the corners and dark areas of the room, as bed bugs love the dark. Bed bugs are in fact creatures who only crawl out in the middle of the night when it is completely dark and quiet. Once you finish disinfecting, the rooms with the bed bug pesticide do not move back all the furniture into the room until you has disinfected each piece of the furniture with bed bug spray. Once you are sure you have sprayed the bed bug pesticide in every nook and corner of the furniture, bed, cupboards etc. then you can move it back into the room. Bed bugs also hate sunlight so you can also put the bed linen and clothes out in the bright sun for a while before using them again. It would be great if you were able to keep the furniture out in the sun for a while before moving it back to its place. If that were not possible then its ok, the bed bug pesticide would have worked anyway. This method has to be followed for every room of the house as bed bugs can crawl anywhere and everywhere. Even the accessories like the computer, television, music system etc. have to be sprayed with the bed bug pesticide as these small pests can hide just about anywhere and crawl out when you least expect. Bed bugs are so insidious you find that most of the time they can go unnoticed for a really long time. This gives them ample time to actually breed right under your nose. These cheeky creatures are a sure pest but can be eradicated by use of bed bug pesticides. If you feel that doing this mammoth job of clearing the bed bugs from your house is tough you might as well hire a professional who is able to free your house of these pests easily. These professionals specialize in the art of eradicating bed bugs as a profession so it is obvious that they will prove a better option if you are the less patient type. Eradicating bed bugs from your house does need a good bed bug pesticide but it also requires the person on the job to have a reasonable amount of patience. A good bed bug pesticide can do the job beautifully and give you a good nights sleep when used properly with patience and care. These bed bug pesticides are a huge boon for humans whose houses have been infested by these creepy bed bugs.

Charlotte Co. movie theater treated for bed bugs – NBC-2 …

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, FL -

We have confirmed a Charlotte County movie theater has been treated for a bed bug infestation.

TheRegal Cinemas 16 Theater in Port Charlotte Town Center was affected.

The Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County confirmed they received a complaint of bed bugs on Nov. 7. An investigation into the complaint accusation was discovered to be true.

Move theater employees say the bugs were found in theater four.

"We went into the ladies room disrobed shook our clothes out and saw specks on the floor. So, it isn't just theater number four," Sherry Ballou said.

Dozens of our viewers reached out to us after our story first aired on Wednesday. They tell us they first told management about the problem back in September.

"We took them at their word that they would look into it, and it would be resolved because we said if it doesn't get resolved we will report it to the health department," Ballou said.

Officials with the Florida Health Department in Charlotte County tell us the theater was closed for several days as a pest control company treated the place. It has since been reopened.

"It just takes one female bed bug to hitchhike on one person. That person can take it into their home, and the next thing you know they have thousands of bed bugs," exterminator Keith Gross of Gross pest services said.

Movie goers we spoke to Wednesday night say they had no idea anything had happened.

"Some sort of notice would have been good. I don't want to go in there and carry something home on my jacket to get my house infested," Fabian Gomez said.

We've contacted Regal Theaters multiple times, but our calls have not been returned.
