Insects Resembling Bed Bugs – Orkin.com

Some insects, such as bat and barn swallow bugs, share the physical appearance of commonbed bugs. They all belong to the family Cimicidae. The physical differences such as the length of hairs on the thorax often are subtle and require magnification. All of these bugs have short, wide heads like those of the bed bug. Their bodies are broad and flat, enabling them to crawl into narrow crevices. All of them feed on blood, but the preferred source varies depending on species. For example, bat bugs prefer to feed solely upon bats.Furthermore, while bed bugs infest crevices, furniture and bedding within human homes, bat bugs inhabit the abandoned nests of bats, birds and other small mammals.

The poultry bug, also known as the Mexican chicken bug, also resembles the bed bug.Poultry bugs live on poultry farms and, unlike bed bugs, are parasites of birds and domestic fowl, such as turkeys, eagles and hawks.Bed bugs feed primarily upon human blood, although they may choose to feed on other warm-blooded animals as well.

Barn swallow bugs also appear similar to bed bugs. While both insects are approximately the same in color and size, barn swallow bugs are covered in long, silky hair. Barn swallow bugs inhabit the nests of cliff swallows and may inhabit human dwellings when birds migrate. Swallow bugs breed freely in summer and are capable of surviving without food for long periods of time by remaining semidormant.

Are These Bed Bugs or Carpet Beetles? | Terminix

If given the choice between having carpet beetles or having bed bugs, the obvious answer would be neither. However, if you suspect that either one of these pests has already snuck into your home and become a threat to your family, you need to know which is which so you can eliminate the threat.

Bed bugs are in the family Cimicidae, while carpet beetles are in the family Dermestids. The difference here is that bed bugs have a mouth made for piercing skin and sucking blood while carpet beetles have a mouth made for chewing on plants and other fibrous material. The good news is that this means carpet beetles dont bite humans. The bad news? Bed bugs do.

Bed bugs feed on human blood while carpet beetles actually prefer pollen and nectar (which is why they often enter your home on cut flowers). Once inside, carpet beetles expand their diet to include hair, fur, silk, wool, clothes and other fibrous material. While carpet beetles arent an invasive danger to your body (they may produce a rash from skin contact), they can still do some serious monetary damage to your carpets, fabrics, upholstery, furniture, food and family possessions.

Another important distinction to note between carpet beetles and bed bugs: carpet beetles can fly. They can enter your home through cracks, doors, windows and other openings. Bed bugs cannot fly. Instead, they drag their blood-filled bodies across your skin to and from their hiding spots.

Bed bugs are reddish-brown, flat and shaped like an apple seed. Carpet beetles vary in color depending on type (e.g., varied, black, furniture or common carpet beetles). Sometimes they look like a black and yellow ladybug. They have short antennae and round bodies and might also have irregular brown, orange and white scales or be solid brown or black. Carpet beetles are generally smaller than bed bugs.

Carpet beetles typically have 11 segments to their antennae, which are shaped like a club. Their membranous wings are covered by a hard exterior shell. Bed bugs have thick antennae arranged in four segments. They have wing pads on both sides of their head, but no wings (i.e., vestigial or undeveloped wings). Its extremely hard to see a carpet beetles eyes, while a bed bug has eyes that protrude from its head. An immature carpet beetle has tufts of hair sticking out from its body while bed bugs may appear hairless.

Bed bugs typically hide within eight feet of their victims. Check in and around your bed as well as clothing, drawers, cracks, baseboards, floorboards, electrical switch covers and anywhere else that grants these pests easy access to your sleeping family.

Carpet beetles arent always found in carpets, especially since many modern carpets are synthetic. Instead, look for carpet beetles in spaces between walls, chimneys, crawl spaces, attics and basements. Carpet beetles particularly like living in places where other insects have lived, especially if those insects are dead. Of course, flowers are their preferred food source, and they are attracted to sunlight, so indoor plants would be their ideal habitat.

Generally speaking, carpet beetles damage your belongings, while bed bugs damage your skin. Still, bed bugs and carpet beetles can both leave similar evidence of their presence on your skin. Bed bug bites are actual bites. The bug injects anesthetic and anticoagulant into your skin with its mouth to ensure a quick feeding that wont disturb your sleep. This saliva causes an allergic reaction in some people, which registers as raised, red welts that itch. Carpet beetles can also leave red bumps on your skin, but they arent bites. These bumps and rashes are caused by an allergic reaction to hairs or bristles on the abdomen of carpet beetle larvae as well as to traces of the insects blood.

The two can easily be confused as both bed bug bites and dermatitis caused by carpet beetles often appear in a straight line or row. This is caused by the path the bug or insect takes when crawling over your skin. Both instances may result in itchy welts that can become infected and erupt from excessive scratching.

Both carpet beetle and bed bug infestations are serious matters that need professional pest control treatment. Both of these obscure invaders disperse throughout your home and are experts when it comes to hiding. Instead of carpet beetles vs. bed bugs, it quickly becomes pests vs. your family. When that happens, be sure to call Terminix to make sure the battle is short-lived.

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs – WFSB 3 Connecticut

Experienced Pest Control Companies are the Best Option for Getting Rid of a Bed Bug Infestation

Purcellville, VA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 05/18/2016 -- There has been a resurgence of bed bug infestations not only in the United States but worldwide as well. Bed bugs can show up anywhere, as they do not thrive on filth and dirt. They can appear in the homes of the richest person as well as that of someone living in less than standard conditions. They are, however, attracted to clutter. The more clutter the more difficult it becomes to get rid of them. They can travel easily and can be unknowingly transported by unsuspecting travelers.

Once bed bugs arrive at a new location, they can scatter fast to new hiding places in just about any location in one's house or other living quarters. It is just a matter of time before they multiply and become a real nuisance and challenge to get rid of. If the infestation gets too bad, it is almost impossible to get rid of them without soliciting professional help from an exterminator or other pest control professional.

Many victims of a bed bug infestation generally try to get rid of them on their own. However, this may prove difficult to an untrained person and may only superficially address the problem instead of completely getting rid of them.

Experienced pest control companies are specialists in bed bug extermination and know where to look for bed bugs. They are trained in the most innovative and up-to-date bed bug extermination methods. It is important when looking for a bed bug exterminator to inquire as to whether they utilize an integrated pest management process. As an important first step, they will begin their quest to get rid of bedbugs by performing an extensive visual and physical inspection of the premises that includes beds, furniture and linens. In addition to a visual inspection the pest control professional may inquire as to past infestations, prior treatments, and whether nearby buildings have had bed bug issues. Once an infestation is confirmed, the exterminator such as Environmental Heat Solutions will determine an appropriate treatment for getting rid of the bed bugs.

About Environmental Heat Solutions Located in Purcellville, Virginia, Environmental Heat Solutions was founded with one goal in mind: To help those suffering from bed bug infestations. Malathion is one of the widely used and most effective treatment for killing and controlling fleas. Besides flea control, malathion is also known to treat and control tent caterpillars, adult Japanese beetles, red clover mites, lace bugs, spiders, mites, thrips, aphids and much more. Malathion is a strong chemical concentrate that requires caution when being used to avoid mishandling and ensure effective results.

Fleas

Fleas are microscopic insects which feed on animal and human blood by piercing into their skin. Their bites leave tiny red bumps which may aggravate into hives or rashes when itched. Flea bites can be very itchy and when itched continuously may also get infected. These insects are also capable of spreading diseases to animals and people. Malathion is the most popular flea control treatment. However, other companies such as Backed by Bayer are also known for their flea control treatments such as Temperid Ready Spray.

Malathion Application & Precautions

Application of Malathion requires a little prep. Since its only meant to be applied outside, clear your yard of all kinds of debris, including animal droppings. Avoid undertaking the treatment during wet or windy weathers. Now mix 5 ounces of Malathion into 1 gallon of water and spray the mixture using a garden sprayer. Cockroaches are both disgusting and a threat to human health. One of the most common pests to invade homes, roaches multiply quickly and if an invasion is not checked quickly can be seen crawling all over the property unabashedly.

When it comes to roach control using just one method rarely suffices. In a severe case a commercial roach killer might also need to be applied. Other than that there area several bait such as avert cockroach gel bait, alpine cockroach gel bait, maxforce roach killer bait and the likes available. Depending upon the type of roach invasion one or more of these can be applied.

While these are steps that need to be taken once the infestation has taken place, in order to control its a process of inspection and exclusion that needs to be applied. Inspecting signs of roach activity on a regular basis and keeping an eye out for cockroach eggs and shed skin is helpful.

Talking about exclusion steps can and need to be taken to reduce cockroach-hiding places. Gaps, pipes under sinks and cracks in walls are potential areas where cockroach breeding takes place.

In addition to these, sanitation is the ultimate goal in order to make sure no breeding takes place. Removing sources of food and water is the key and while it is not practical to be able to do this completely, efforts should be made towards minimization.

In the end, all one can do is take care of these things but if all else fails and an attack does take place, pest control services are imperative. The professionals will use a commercial roach killer and get rid of the pests and after that it is a matter of continued maintenance.

Want to control roaches? Use the steps above for guidance and get started today!

Essential Oils Fail at Killing Bed Bugs | WIRED

Slide: 1 / of 2 .

Slide: 2 / of 2 .

Caption: Graph of products tested. Only the first two products significantly killed bed bugs--when sprayed directly on them. Singh et. al 2014

Consumers desperate to eradicatetiny domestic vampireshave created ahuge marketfor natural bed bug control. Salesarehigh, as are some of the claims; bogus bed bug products have prompted multipleFederal Trade Commission (FTC) actions for deceptive advertising.

Newresearch put11 over-the-counter bed bugspraysto the test to see if essential oils can do more than make your bedroom smell nice. The results were underwhelming.

Potential of Essential Oil-Based Pesticides and Detergents for Bed Bug Control. 2014. N. Singh, C Wang, & R. Cooper.J. Econ. Entomol. 107(6); DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1603/EC14328

The products tested containedingredients foran aromatherapy overdose: cedar, cinnamon, geraniol, clove oil, peppermint, rosemary, lemon grass oil, citronella, and others. Additionalingredients were soap (sodium lauryl sulfate, a foaming agent commonly found in shampoo); salts (potassium sorbate); and 2-Phenethyl propionate, which occurs naturally in peanuts.

Most of the products failed a very simple test: if you sprayed the stuffdirectly on live bed bugs in a petri dish, would they die? Researchers measured bug deaths after 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 days to make sure they captured any lingeringeffects. Two conventional pesticides were included for comparison purposes in the tests:Temprid SCandDemand CS. There also were control bed bugs that got spritzed with water as a mock spray treatment.

Seven of the natural products tested did not manage to kill even(50%)of the bed bugs sprayed, measured by dead bugs 10 days later.

Only Temprid SCandEcoRaiderkilled 100% of the bugswhen applied directly. AlthoughTemprid SC, a synthetic pesticide, killed 100% of the bed bugs on the first day, only88% of bedbugs in the EcoRaider tests had died by the 5th day. None of the compounds tested acted as repellents to bed bugs in climb-up tests, where the bugs had to walk over a treated area.

Thesecond synthetic pesticide, Demand CS, performed poorly in these trials, probably because of resistance to pyrethroid insecticidesin the bed bugs tested. It did, however, do betterin residual tests; 14 days later Demand CSwas still killing on a level with EcoRaider and Temprid SC.

It Might Not Be the Essential Oils, Anyway

Perhaps the most interesting and confusing conclusion from this research is that essential oils are probablynotwhat killed thebed bugs. The same active ingredients inEcoRaider and Bed Bug Patrol were also in other products (Bed Bug Fix, Green Rest Easy, and Essentria, for example) thatwerent effective killers. What actually killed the bugs is likely something in the spray formulation.

Adjuvants, wetting agents, spreaders, stabilizers, defoamers, stickers, and solvents are all in these sprays, and might work in tandem with the essential oils by improving penetration into the insect, or slowing detoxification. Those formulations are generally proprietary and secret, so figuring out what works may take a while.

No, Mr. Bug, I Expect You to Die

If you see a bed bug and spray it with EcoRaider, it probably will kill the insect, based on this research. The problem is, you generally dont see bed bugs. Thats why they are so insidious. Bed bugs are remarkably tiny, flat, and fast. They can live inside the slot of a screw holding your bed-frame together. They mightlive inside electrical outlets near your bed, or behind photo frames. They can bide their time and wait; bed bugs can go for months without feeding. Its the bed bugs you cant see that you should worry about.

As someone whos written about bogus insecticide products for years, the dismal performance of green pest spraysisnt a shock.Bed bugs offerfertile ground for hucksters in the same way that serious medical conditions invite exploitation of the ill. Both topics involve a lot of anxiety and stress, dont have easy solutions, and people are willing to pay lots of money to find a solution.

Ecoexempt, the worst performer in these tests, sells for $84/gallon;Stop Bugging Meis $90/gallon.Over-the-counter insecticide foggers are not effective for bed bug control and are still sold widely for that purpose.

Natural pesticides qualify for exemption from the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). They dont actually have to provide efficacy data for registration. With an over-loaded regulatory systemand a low cost of development, manufacturers can roll out new products quickly, and rake in the profits.

Hopefully theFTC will follow up on this research with additional warnings to get some of these ineffective products off the market. Consumers usingthesesprays may justgive theirbed bugs alovely peppermint scent.
