The Allegany County Public School System recently responded to instances of bed bugs and head lice in schools.

The staff is trained to follow procedures outlined in an integrated pest management policy in school buildings and on school grounds.

In recent years, bed bugs have been more prevalent because certain pesticides have been banned due to their negative environmental impact.

Neither bed bugs nor lice carry diseases, however, the best method of preventing an infestation is regular inspection.

Custodial personnel at the school system are aware of specific instances of bed bugs and head lice and are working diligently to clean any contaminated areas to ensure that all staff and students are provided a safe learning environment.

I amabout 3 months into a 2 year lease and found bed bugs abouta month and a half ago at the condo Im renting. The owner claims that the bed bugs were not there before we came, but we did not have bed bugsbefore we moved in soI think its difficult if not impossible to prove if:a) We brought the bugsthere b) The bugs were there alreadyc) The bugs arrived after we got thereSince I have a friend in the pest control industry I decided not to bother the land lord right away and just try to deal with the problem myself. Here is what we have personally done over the past month to get rid of the bed bugs:1) Sprayed the entire house 3 separate times. The cost of the chemicals at wholesale price was $70. Besides the cost spraying for bed bugs is time consuming and my wife developed anallergic reaction to the spray for which she needed to go to the doctor.2) Threw away our two year old mattress. It will probably cost $700-$900 to replace and weve been sleeping on an air mattress for the past month. We will continue to sleep on an uncomfortable air mattress until our lives are bed bug free.3) Laundered all our clothing and bedding twice.I estimate that this has cost us about $70.4) Sprayed bed bug foggers from HomeDepot twice.Cost for foggers: $60.In summary weve spent a substantial amount of time and about $200 + the cost of a new mattress to deal with these pests on our own and they are still around. My two questions are:1) What legal rights do I have to request that my Landlord take care of the problem? Is it his responsibility or mine? I dont plan on trying to charge him for the work/money I have already spent but it isobvious to me that this is a problem that needsthe help of a professional pest control agent that specializes in bed bugs. 2) Ifmy landlord does not or cannot rectify the bed bug problem am I entitled tobreak the lease withoutpenalty? Thanks for any advice you might have. Paul

Bed Bug Extermination Prices Try Our Free Quote Request Tool!

Bed bug infestations have been on the rise in the United States for the last couple of decades. Once associated with poor hygiene and poverty, the bugs resurgence is, according to research, caused by international travel, immigration, changes in pest control practices, and insecticide resistance. Bed bugs live in places where there are ample human and animal hosts such as homes, apartments, hotels, and dormitories. Theyre difficult to eradicate and exterminator fees often run into the thousands of dollars.

While they dont carry disease, bed bugs present an existential nightmare for most. The surest way to identify an infestation is to find a live bed bug. Adult bugs can be spotted with the unaided eye; theyre oval, flat, rusty-colored, and about 5 mm long. After feeding theyre slightly more elongated (see a pre and post-feeding bed bug picture here).

Short of finding a live bed bug (which is tough to do because they feed at around 4 a.m. and hide during the day), household members or visitors might notice small, pink, itchy skin welts that resemble mosquito bites. Many bite victims dont react at all, although extreme reactions can lead to asthma, hives, and in rare cases, anaphylaxis. Other ways to identify bed bugs are their excrement (tiny dark spots), shed beg bug skin, and blood smears from crushed bugs.

If youre like most people, even the slightest evidence of bed bugs is cause to call an exterminator. Heres what to expect once the local bug guy or gal arrives:
