Two Tennessee Cities Among The Worst In The U.S. For Bed Bugs – iHeartRadio

As people around the country begin traveling more, and staying in unfamiliar places, the number of reported cases of bed bugs has also been on the rise. That's why Orkin recently released its annual list of the U.S. cities with the most reported cases of bed bugs, using data gathered from December 1, 2020 to November 30, 2021.

Two cities in Tennessee earned spots on the list: Knoxville, coming in at No. 29, and Nashville, following closely at No. 34.

"Bed bugs are a concern for everyone because they are master hitchhikers, traveling home with people when they likely don't realize it," said Orkin entomologist Ben Hottel. "Their nature of hiding in difficult-to-find cracks and crevices can make them hard to control, which is why involving a trained professional at the sight of an introduction is recommended."

So what should you do to minimize the risk of infestation? Orkin suggests regularly checking your home for signs of bed bugs, inspecting mattress seams, baseboards and even electrical outlets. Experts also recommend decluttering your home to make spotting the insects even easier and thoroughly inspecting any secondhand furniture before brining it inside your home.

Here are the Top 50 cities for bed bugs, according to the report:

Bed bugs: The smells warning of an infestation including a marzipan odour – TechnoCodex

When bed bugs attach themselves to people or clothing, often in infested public places, they can be inadvertently introduced into homes. People can spot signs of an infestation in a number of ways, including by certain odours.

Many bugs emit odours called alarm pheromones, and bed bugs are one of them said Dodson Pest Control.

The site added: If a large group ofbed bugsis disturbed, such as when someone plops themselves on a bed that they have made their home, they may emit these pheromones.

Bed bug odours can also come from faecal matter.

Interestingly, bed bugs can smell different to different people.

Many people report smelling coriander, but another common description is the scent of spoiled raspberries.

Others report a strong acidic scent or that of almonds or marzipan.

If you notice an unusual smell in an otherwise clean room, it may be time to call in a professional.

If you do not smell anything, dont be concerned, as not everyone can detect an infestation through scent.

Some professional exterminators use portable devices to raise the temperature of a room to a lethal temperature, explains Mayo Clinic.

According to the health body, all stages of bedbugs can be killed at 50 degrees Celsius.

There are two roads to go down: chemical treatments and non-chemical treatments.

Chemical treatments are called insecticides substances designed to kill insects.

If you are attempting to eradicate an infestation without professional help, it is advisable to steer clear of chemical treatments, however.

Bedbug infestation is requiring entire Tennessee legislative office building to be treated – Tennessean

Workers in Tennessee's legislative office building aren't just trying to avoid catching the coronavirus.

Now, there arebedbugs.

The pests were discovered Wednesday in multiple offices on the fifth floor of the Cordell Hull office building, where House members of the General Assembly and their staff work.

All House staff have now been advised to work from home until after Thanksgiving while offices are treated for bedbugs, according to legislative administration director Connie Ridley.

"It appears they were unknowingly brought in from a location away from the Cordell Hull Building on clothing or a related item," Ridley said Thursday in response to a question about how legislative officials believe the infestation began.

Due to the pandemic, traffic in and out of Cordell Hull building is already limited only to those who work in the building or who have scheduled an appointment. Many executive branch employees continue to work from home, though the majority of legislative employees are required to continue reporting to the office.

While no bedbugs have been detected on other floors, a contractor has advised that the entire building be treated for the insects "out of an abundance of caution," Ridley wrote in an email to legislative employees late Thursday afternoon.

Staff and members working in their fifth-floor offices Wednesday were informed that an exterminator was going to be spraying the area in the coming days, but were not initially told that there was a bedbug infestation.

An email that went out to members Wednesday referenced an "insect problem" and advised legislators to reschedule meetings Thursday and Friday or to move them to an alternate location.

Now, exterminators will take more time to treat the building.

"All House staff have been advised to remain away from the office until after the Thanksgiving Holiday, which will give the contractors time and access to appropriately treat the affected areas," Ridley said in a statement Thursday. "The contractors will continue to assess the facility during this period and make further recommendations if necessary."

In an email sent to Senate staff on Thursday, they were advised to inform Lt. Gov. Randy McNally's office if they "notice any unwelcome guests" in offices.

This appears to be the first documented case of bedbugs in Tennessee General Assembly buildings, according to legislative librarian Eddie Weeks, who noted that "in times past such things may have not been named."

A House resolution in 1893, however, ordered the Capitol superintendent to "take up the entire carpet in this room, and have the same disinfected and put away for safekeeping until the time for the meeting of the next legislature.

Bed Bugs – Tennessee

What do bed bugs look like?

Bed bugs are small, flat insects. Bed bugs are reddish-brown in color and do not fly. Bed bug eggs and nymphs are tiny and can be very difficult to see. Bed bug adults can be up to 1/3 inch or about the size of President Lincolns head on a penny.

Bed bugs often bite people at night during sleep. One of the easiest ways to identify a bed bug infestation is by the tell-tale bite marks on the face, neck, arms, hands or any other body parts while sleeping. It is important to look for other bed bug clues where you sleep. These clues include bed bug skins after molting, blood spots on bedding, or a sweet musty odor.

Bed bug bite marks are similar to that of a mosquito or a flea -- a slightly swollen and red area that may itch and be irritating. It is hard to tell if youve been bitten by a bed bug unless you find bed bugs or signs of infestation. When bed bugs bite, they inject an anesthetic and an anticoagulant that prevents a person from realizing they are being bitten. Most people do not realize they have been bitten until bite marks appear from one to several days later.

Bed bugs are not known to spread disease.

To cope with bed bug bites try to avoid scratching and apply antiseptic cream or lotion. Maybe take an antihistamine. People who excessively scratch itchy bug bites can increase the chance of a secondary skin infection.

Bed bug bites affect everyone differently. Some people may have no reaction and will not develop bite marks or visible signs of being bitten. Other people may be allergic to the bed bugs and can react with enlarged bite marks and painful swelling at the bite site. Bed bugs bites are not considered to be dangerous, though an allergic reaction may need medical attention.
