Eaten alive by bed bugs – Valley News Live – KVLY …

MOORHEAD, M.N. -- Some Moorhead residents in the Sharp View Apartments aren't too happy with the latest visitors. In the past week residents have found and documented over 10 bed bugs!

One resident told us she had to miss out on her family's Thanksgiving with her 100-year-old mother, because her loved ones didn't want to risk the chance of getting any bugs. Some said they feel a prisoner in their own home and think management isn't doing enough.

"Nobody can sleep, said John Johnson. It's a psychological problem as much as it is a physical problem."

Most fear going to bed to wake up finding red spots from these pesky pests all over their body.

Many are concerned for their health, but afraid to speak against management. The executive director of Moorhead Public Housing Authority said these bugs have been a problem since the beginning of November.

"Since then, we have sprayed the common areas of the building two times, all the common area furniture, every unit in the building, and everything was chemically treated, said Sally Roe, the executive director at Moorhead Public Housing Authority.

Despite the attempts to kill these pests that have out-stayed their welcome, a chemical treatment may not be enough. Fargo Cass Public Health told us these critters have built immunity to the chemicals used since the last scare a few years ago. Now, they're back in the F-M area. The only way to rid them once and for all is a heat treatment.

"Two apartments of the 47 have been heat treated, said Roe.

The goal: to treat all apartments in the next three months. But, residents said it's not good enough, killing the bugs in one room at a time won't prevent them from spreading.

"The first thing in our lease it says you're entitled to a safe, clean, sanitary place to live and we're not getting that, said Johnson.

Bed Bugs Become Growing Problem – KFYRTV.COM – Bismarck …

As people are becoming more mobile, bed bugs are becoming a growing problem across the country, even in North Dakota.

Bed bugs are considered one of the most difficult pests to control because of their quick breeding capabilities and tendency to hide in small, dark places, like headboards and baseboards, electrical outlets and box springs.

Often, people don't even know they have bed bugs until they develop bite marks on their body while sleeping, which could take up to 14 days.

But, there are different treatments available to get rid of the bed bugs.

"The whole home is heated. A crew comes in and they heat up the whole house and they drive the air with the fans and everything to sort of make a giant convection oven inside your house, says Brian Francis of Plunketts Pest Control.

There are also chemical treatments that can be done by professionals. Bed bugs aren't considered to be dangerous, but if people have a bad reaction they should seek medical attention.

Bed Bugs Cost Fargo Shelter $25K, My Cleaning Products Shares Tips How to Kill Bed Bugs Promptly and Avoid the Same …

Fargo, ND (PRWEB) April 07, 2014

Bed bugs showed up at a shelter in Fargo, North Dakota. And according to a report from valleynewslive.com, their presence cost the place some $25,000. In connection with it, My Cleaning Products shared a number of tips how to kill bed bugs promptly to avoid such a huge bed bug elimination expense.

The report about the incident was posted on April 03, 2014. It relayed that the money the facility spent was particularly for the replacement of its 30-year-old wooden beds to metal bunks in order to deter the pests.

However, the amount was too big for the shelter alone to bear, based on the report. And so, to cover the whole expense, it detailed that a family company and a local church contributed.

Besides changing the beds though, the report added that the shelter also plans to build a hot room next year. As it explained, it's an area that gets warm enough to kill the critters in anything that the guests bring in.

Here is a part of the post Fargo Shelter Battles Bed Bugs by My Cleaning Products.

The bed bugs in Fargo in North Dakota showed up at a shelter. And needless to say, they brought in a huge problem.

In an average night, a hundred men stay at the facility. Anyone of them could have brought the critters in given that they are sneaky, hitching a ride on almost anything.

My Cleaning Products said that because bed bugs are everywhere these days, anyone could be their next victim. And that means anyone could be forced to spend big just as the reported Fargo shelter did, it cited.

However, it said that such huge expense is preventable. To do it, it shared that one needs to take preventive steps. Moreover, it stressed that a person must also prepare a bed bug spray. As it explained that it's because those crawlies are sneaky and the product could enable anyone to kill bed bugs promptly and stop them from starting a huge infestation.

Bed bugs in Grand Forks, North Dakota public housing …

Public housing tenants in a Grand Forks, North Dakota public housing development are suffering from bed bug bites, according to a story in he Grand Forks Herald Saturday.

The article, Bedbugs infest GF apartment complex again, said twelve units were infested in the 76-unit Cherry Heights complex (at 110 Cherry Street), which houses those over 62, the disabled, and people on low incomes.

The word again in the headline referred to the fact that one unit in the building was infested back in March. This suggests that either (a) all bed bugs in the original infestation were not killed and later spread to others, (b) bed bug infestations were present at the time in other units that were not known about, (c) one or more tenants or staff have brought bed bugs in since the March infestation, or (d) all of the above.

The article says,

After the report of bedbugs in March, the affected apartment and surrounding units were treated.

We felt that we did have it under control. We felt we did everything that had to be done, [executive dirctor Terry] Hanson said.

From April to July, the housing authority received no reports of bedbugs. But its not clear whether this is a fresh case or a lingering one, Hanson said.

It is possible that other units besides surrounding ones were infested at the time. Its also not clear how many treatments occurred back in March. Most bed bug infestations take more than one treatment to clear up. Some take many more. If tenants do not react to bites, they may not know if bed bugs are gone. The housing authority should therefore not rely on subsequent reports of bed bugs before following up with further treatment.

The Grand Forks Herald said the building was being treated next week with pesticide spraying by Ecolab, and that tenants in the twelve units being treated would be asked to vacate their homes for two days during treatment.

I can only hope residents have been educated about how to avoid moving bed bugs to the hotels, motels, friends or relatives homes where they might stay during that time.
