Bed Bugs in Missouri & Bedbug Pest Control Information

Bed bugs have returned with a vengeance after being eradicated from the U.S. after World War II with a newly introduced chemical known as DDT. Researchers have named mostly third world and underdeveloped countries as the source of this insect, and concluded that the resurgence here in the United States and Missouri is due to international travelers who have visited these regions and unknowingly brought back bedbugs in their clothing or luggage.

The biggest problem we face with the bed bugs insect is their habitual treatment with inferior or weak solutions of pyrethroid-based products. Over-exposure to mild, inadequate or improperly applied chemicals has resulted in more resistant strains of bed bugs. In short, a bedbug infestation problem is not one you want to take shortcuts on exterminating. Call your bed bug pest control expert immediately if you suspect a bed bug infestation.

The bed bug specie is highly adaptable to its environment, very difficult to access and can live in solitude for long periods of time after feeding, and theyre egg-laying machines. Tell-tale signs of a bedbug infestation are blood stains on the mattresses, the presence of bedbugs, skin or egg casings, and recurring bite marks on your person. These small, reddish welts from bed bug bites can occur in clusters, usually around underwear lines or the side you sleep on. Bedbugs tend to live in mattresses, bed frames, dressers, wall voids, picture frames and under baseboards. Bed bug infestations are often found in hotels, nursing homes, college dorms, apartments or wherever there is a large aggregation of people. Bed bug treatments are a little pricy, but incredibly important to completely eradicate the infestation quickly.

Elimination of a bedbug problem in your home or business requires a fast and thorough pest control program and must be designed to completely eliminate the infestation.

Common Bed Bug (Human Bedbug) | Missouri Department of …

Description:

Adults are reddish-brown or brown, oval, flattened, wingless bugs. The hind wings are absent and the front wings reduced to padlike structures. There are many signs of their presence in a home. See the external links at the bottom of this page.

Similar species: Sometimes misidentified as small cockroaches. Also, bat bugs are nearly identical to bed bugs, but their primary host is bats. You need strong magnification to tell them apart: On bat bugs, the hairs along the edge of the pronotum (the shieldlike structure just behind the head) are as long as, or longer than, the width of the eye. On bed bugs, those hairs are shorter than the eye width. Bat bugs can infest human homes just like bed bugs, except they usually arrive on bats. If you have bat bugs, then you probably also have (or had) bats in your home or attic, too. If your bats leave for some reason, then the hungry bugs may wander around and find you.

Bed Bugs Biting in Missouri | KOMU.com | Columbia, MO |

COLUMBIA - Recent studies show bed bugs are at an all-time high nationwide, mostly due to a newly-developed resistance to commonly used pesticides. This problem has found its way to Columbia, as local living areas and furniture stores have had to take extra precaution to make sure that bed bugs don't infest their beds, couches and carpets.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Jefferson City recently came under fire for having furniture from its store infested with bed bugs. Regional coordinator Major Kendall Matthews insists that the store goes through every precaution to make sure that the furniture sold in the thrift stores are clean and safe for families. He said, "We want the community to know that we do not allow for any creepy crawlies in any of the furniture that we sell at our stores."

With bed bug outbreaks hitting all across the country, residents have to deal with a large hassle before finally getting rid of all the bugs. University of Missouri senior Laura Swan moved into a house that was already infested in July, and explained that she and her roommates had to perform extensive cleaning on top of hiring an extermination company.

Plus, the bed bugs leave a nasty bite. "The bites are super painful," Swan said."They're like a hundred times more itchy than mosquito bites, so it was miserable to be outside."

Because the bed bugs have developed a resistance to more basic and weaker pesticides, experts recommend calling a professional extermination company when dealing with a bed bug infestation.

Bed Bugs Are Biting

Bed bugs forced a hospital to temporarily close a waiting room. It happened at Cox South in Springfield. An exterminator treated the waiting room today.

We wondered how common bed bugs are, and how to deal with them. It turns out bed bugs are making more appearances around this area recently. Exterminators tell us what we need to be aware of if these creatures pay our homes a visit.

"They're parasitic insects they feed on blood," says David Blake with Ortex Pest Management Professional. Blake says bed bugs are bittng more of us lately. "Three to four years ago I'd get one to two calls a week. Now I'm getting five to ten calls a week and we're just one of many companies," says Blake.

Many don't realize bed bugs are visible. "They're the size of Lincon's head on a penny," says Blake.

Plus, bed bugs leave a mark. "Bites on skin is the number one thing. Or the stains they leave behind are rusty brown," explains Blake.

Travel increases the spread of bed bugs. "Springfield's a big college town so you've got kids coming in from all over. You've got Branson right down the road, so people coming to travel to go to Branson," explains Blake.

Bed bugs are attracted to our body heat, and the carbon dioxide we exhale. "So as you're laying in bed at night, you're warm, you're exhaling a lot," adds Blake.

Joel Z. Williams created a youtube video of a homemade method of exterminating bed bugs on a budget called "Create a Co2 Bedbug Trap using The "Missouri Method." Williams says, "I will teach you how to put together a long lasting, non-toxic, bed bug trap that relies on CO2."

There are also other methods. "There's a lot of circumstances with pests where it's okay to use homemade stuff but with something as severe as bed bugs, I wouldn't use anything like that. I'd call a professional who knows what they're talking about and knows how to apply the chemicals directly," says Blake.

Exterminators use a B&G gun to kill bed bugs. If they need to use this in your house, be prepared to leave for about five hours. "And it is expensive to get rid of," adds Blake. Blake says the minimum cost is about three to four hundred dollars. "But it can go up from there into the thousand dollar range," adds Blake.
