To get rid of any bed bugs – Express.co.uk

Bed bugs are usually found in the crevices and joints of your mattress and feed on human blood.

While they are not dangerous and do not spread diseases they can be stressful to live with some people can experience reactions to their bites.

They can cause itchy red bumps on the skin and in more severe cases may cause a rash or fluid-filled blisters.

But how can you identify an infestation and what do they look like?

Adult bed bugs have small, flat, oval-shaped bodies and are wingless.

Their colour can vary between dark yellow, red or brown and are up to 5mm long.

To spot the bugs or their tiny white eggs, it is best to use a bright torch to check your mattress.

Bites on your skin, tiny black spots on your mattress and blood spots on your sheets from accidentally squashing them can be indications of an infestation.

So how do you get rid of bedbugs and how can you prevent an infestation?

The NHS suggests contacting your local council or a pest control firm thats a member of the British Pest Control Association or National Pest Technicians Association.

It writes on its website: A technician will carry out an inspection to confirm an infestation. They can then use special treatments such as insecticide, a steamer or rapid freeze system to get rid of the bugs.

It also suggests a number of steps you may be asked to carry out to help the problem.

The first, is to wash infested clothes or bed linen at 60C or put them in a dryer on a hot setting for 30 minutes.

Next, use a vacuum cleaner with a hose to suck up any bugs you can see. Proceed to dispose of the contents of the vacuum cleaner in a sealed bag.

Consider throwing away any mattress or furniture thats heavily infested.

Use plastic mattress covers that encase the entire mattress - this will stop any bed bugs getting in or out.

If youre looking to prevent bed bug infestations, make sure to inspect your mattress and bed regularly for signs of an infestation and get professional advice if you think you have bed bugs.

Avoid buying second-hand mattresses and carefully inspect second-hand furniture before bringing it in your home.

Finally, keep your bedroom tidy and remove clutter.

How to Prevent & Avoid Bed bugs – Bed bug Prevention Steps

Print Article By DoMyOwn staff

Familiarize yourself with what a bed bug and a bed bug infestation looks like so that you can avoid interacting with an active infestation. While you might not always be able to prevent a few bed bugs from entering your house or apartment, early detection can stop 1 or 2 bugs from becoming a full-blown infestation.

Read our Bed Bug Identification Guide to learn more.

Every time you change your bed linens, you should look for signs of bed bugs. Check linens for bugs and blood spots. Inspect your mattress, paying close attention to the folds, tufts, and seams. Look for live bedbugs, feces, or cast skins.

A mattress cover and box spring cover on each bed will eliminate hiding spots and make bed bug inspections easier. We also recommend placing bed bug traps under each leg of the bed. These traps catch bed bugs before they can climb up onto furniture and make it easier to identify a problem.

Do a thorough check of your hotel room or guest bedroom when out of town to prevent bringing bed bugs back home with you. Inspect the mattress, headboard, and dresser(s) before placing your personal belongings in the room.

We recommend packing some bed bug travel spray just in case you encounter a bed bug or infestation. Travel sprays are not intended to treat an entire room or combat an infestation. Instead, they are to be used on your belongings to prevent you from bringing back an unexpected souvenir (in the form of a bed bug) from your trip. Read our article on How to Avoid Hotel Bed Bugs for more information.

Always check for bed bugs after you have had guests spend the night. Friends and family members may not be aware that they left behind bed bugs, especially if they have been traveling for long periods of time. Inspect any area where your guests' luggage was stored and where guests spent time resting and sleeping.

Do not pick up any furniture that has been discarded on the curb and be very cautious when purchasing secondhand. A quick inspection of used furniture can save you from the nightmare of a bedbug infestation.

We highly recommend treating any used furniture with Sterifab before it is brought into your home. Sterifab not only kills bed bugs and bed bug eggs on contact, it also acts as a bactericide, germicide, and deodorant.

We recommend using bed bug traps and bed bug monitors to detect infestations early. Caught quickly, you can avoid weeks of headache and treatment. If you notice bed bugs at any point in time, you will need to start treatment immediately as a small infestation can grow quickly. Read our guide on how to get rid of bed bugs here.

Bedbug Infestation – What Causes Bed Bugs – orkin.com

Bed bugs are flat and small in size, allowing them to hide easily from view during the day when they are not active. They hide in mattresses, bed frames, bedding, furniture, carpets, baseboards and bedroom clutter. They are most commonly found in the seams of mattresses orinside box springs. However, it is not necessary to locate a specimen to identify an infestation.Their excrement leavesbrown toblack stains on mattresses and linens, and bloodstains may be visible where bed bugs have been accidentallycrushed.

Bed bugs are commonlytransported within luggage, allowing them to spread anywhere humans settle. Infestations have become a problem in domestic households, hotels, dormitories and other places of residence. Because of their small size and propensity to hide within mattresses and furniture, controlling a bed bug infestation can prove difficult.

The presence of only one fertile female bed bug in a friendly environment such as a single or multiple family dwelling is an infestation that is waiting to happen. Since a healthy, blood-fed female bed bug can produce from 200-500 healthy eggs during her lifetime and may lay from 2-5 eggs each day, the likelihood of an infestation of bed bugs is extremely high unless bed bug control efforts by your pest management professional are employed to eliminate the infestation.

Bed bugs getting the heat treatment at downtown building – KTOO

Over a third of the units in a downtown Juneau apartment building are being treated for bed bugs.

Managers of the Mountain View Apartments on West 12th Street noticed the pests in some units earlier this month.

In 2008, we had a similar kind of outbreak, said Corry Isabell, the Juneau Family Investment Center manager with the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, which operates the apartment building. It doesnt happen overnight. Its a build up.

This example image shows a canvas strap of old box spring covering that is housing adults, skin castings, feces and eggs. (Photo courtesy of Dr. Louis Sorkin)

Isabell said theres a good amount of changeover in the clientele at Mountain View.

We probably turn 20units a year, she said. So, a third new clients every year, and keeping everybody educated, aware of the situation, acting aggressively on what they bring into their homes is always a challenge.

Isabell said they hired a Seattle pest control company and their K-9 unit sniffed out the common areas and all 270 residential units in their Juneau facilities.

Isabell said bed bugs were found in 25 of the 62 units for fixed- or low-income clients at Mountain View Apartments.

The pests were also found in five other units in other of the corporationsbuildings.

Theyre all over, said Mariah Jerman, an environmental program specialist focusing on pesticides in the Department of Environmental Conservations Division of Environmental Health. Were a very transient state. They travel all over the place.

Jerman said bed bugs are non-discriminatory.

They are called the hitchhiker bug because they will latch onto anybody if the opportunity is right, and they can follow us anywhere, she said. It doesnt have anything to do with economic class, cleanliness. Although, it can be harder to eradicate if the environment is very cluttered.

Bed bugs need blood usually human blood to grow and advance through each of the half-dozen stages in their life cycle, culminating with the final egg-laying stage.

At that point, theyre about the size of an apple seed.

Jerman said bed bugs can be found hitchhiking on clothing and furniture.

Often times, if they come from an infested location, they might end up say on the street with a free sign, Jerman said. That free sign, people like oh, hey, free couch theyll take it home and there will be eggs inside of it. Then, they just spread that way. Thats how apartment buildings will often get them, used furnishings that have them inside.

Furniture can be vacuumed, heat treated or wiped down with a solution, but Jerman advises against blowing or splashing off the eggs.

Clothes can be treated by placing into a dryer at high heat for 40 minutes.

Bed bugs can leave itchy bite marks on human skin, but thats about it. Unlike mosquitos, they are not known to transmit any diseases. Still, Jerman warns against excessively scratching any bites to avoid infection.

In addition to cautions about bringing home second-hand furniture, Isabell said theyre also encouraging Mountain View Apartments residents to police themselves and question guests who may be sneaking into the building.

Isabell said theyre starting the month-long process of heat-treating units at the building. False walls with plastic sheeting will be used to seal off hallway sections. Portable heaters will increase the temperature to 140 degrees to kill the bugs and their eggs.

Before heat treatments, maintenance staff will seal off any cracks or openings in rooms to prevent the bugs escape.

Some people are not going to be prepared when they are supposed to be treated, Isabell said. Other people are going to be prepared early. And so the schedule will flex. The goal will be to have it all done by the end of July.

Residents cannot remain in their rooms during the nine-hour heat treatment. They can wait in the buildings common room that is free from bed bugs, but which has been recently closed to the public to prevent the spread of any potential infestation.

You can find more information about bed bugs at the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
