How to get rid of bed bugs: Four simple tips to eradicate them from your bed – Express

Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown parasitic insects that prey on you while you sleep. Although bed bugs aren't known to spread disease, they can leave you feeling ruffled in your own home. Their signature style is to leave bite marks on your skin, which can be itchy and red.

To make matters worse, some people may have an allergic reaction that can include severe itching, blisters or hives.

Bed bugs can be fiendishly difficult to capture because they hide in small nooks and crannies.

According to the NHS, typical hideouts include on bed frames, mattresses, clothing, furniture, behind pictures and under loose wallpaper.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to shield your bed from the nasty pests.

According to pest control body Terminix, make your bed an island to help get rid of bed bugs fast by moving it at least six inches away from the wall.

The insect experts also advise washing and drying all bed linens including pillow cases, sheets, comforters and mattress pads at the highest settings allowed by the manufacturer.

"Seal in plastic bags once clean," it advises.

"Post-treatment, use encasements (bed-bug-proof covers) to cover your mattress and box spring. Ensure they have zippers and are high quality to cut down on tearing," says Terminix.

Furthermore, you should check under your bed and discard anything unneeded, advises the pest control body.

It adds: "Items you want to keep should be stored in the same room to prevent the infestation from spreading."

If the bed bug infestation persists, you may need to hire a professional exterminator.

According to Mayo Clinic, they may use a combination of pesticides and non-chemical treatments.

"Some professional exterminators use portable devices to raise the temperature of a room to a lethal temperature," explains the health body.

All stages of bedbugs can be killed at 50 degrees celsius, notes the health site.

"In some cases, you may have to throw out heavily infested items such as mattresses or couches," it adds.

Bedbug bites usually clear up on their own in a week or so but there are things you can do to alleviate them.

The NHS recommends: Things you can do include:

You can also ask a pharmacist about using a mild steroid cream like hydrocortisone cream to ease bed bug bites, says the health body.

If the bites are still very painful, swollen or itchy, or the redness around the bites is spreading after trying treatments from a pharmacist, you should see a GP, warns the health site.

"You may have an infection and need treatment with antibiotics," it adds.

Bed bugs: The two major warning signs you may be dealing with an infestation – Express

Bed bugs are flat, rust-coloured parasites about five millimetres long. The bugs have developed resistance to chemical treatments, making eradication of the pests more difficult. How can you tell for sure that you may have a bed bug infestation?

Bed bugs are tiny insects which feed exclusively off the blood of humans.

Theycan easily spread and lead secretive lives thus making the little critters so difficult to spot.

Only female bed bugs are able to lay eggs and when they do, as many as 300 eggs are laid in their lifetime.

Waking up and feeling a new itch is one of the more common warning signs of a possible infestation.

Other signs of bed bugs include seeing evidence of them on sheets, pillowcases, or excrement left over.

Smelling a certain odour emanating from the bedroom could mean youre at risk.

Terminix said on their website: Like many species of bugs, bed bugs release odours called alarm pheromones.

"When a group of bed bugs gets disturbed, you may be able to smell that odour. Odours may result from bed bug faecal material.

"Other smells could be a coriander smell, or a sweet, musty odour."

Bed bugs have exoskeletons, which mean they shed an outer shell at different stages of their life cycle.

Look for shell-like remains on bedroom furniture, or wherever you may be laying your head at night.

Like all living things in life, bed bugs have the need to release themselves too.

This means tiny black specks can indicate theyve been defecating all over your stuff.

Terminix added: Shed beg bug skin looks almost identical to a live bed bug.

The difference between a skin and an actual bug is that the exoskeleton will appear empty and translucent and obviously cannot move.

Newer infestations have fewer shed skins because adults dont moult.

As the infestation wears on and mating continues, immature bed bugs begin to make up the majority of the population.

At this point, each adult bed bug has already moulted several time and since shed skins do not decompose at the same rate, they start to build up over time.

How to get rid of bed bugs

Bedbug bites usually clear up on their own in a week or so but there are a number of steps you can take to alleviate symptoms in the meantime.

The NHS says to do the following:

Put something cool, like a clean, damp cloth, on the affected area to help with the itching and any swelling

Keep the affected area clean

Do not scratch the bites to avoid getting an infection

Additionally, you can also ask a pharmacist for a mild steroid cream like hydrocortisone cream to ease bed bug bites (children under 10 and pregnant women should get advice from a doctor before using hydrocortisone cream), notes the health body.

Tourists trip to Dublin ruined after she is bitten 77 times by bed bugs in Hotel Riu Plaza The Gresham – The Irish Sun

A SWEDISH woman was treated for bed bugs after staying at a lavish city centre hotel in Dublin.

Sanja Manduric, from Lund in Sweden, forked out almost 350 for a two night stay at Hotel Riu Plaza The Gresham on OConnell Street while on a business trip.

The 54-year-old Swedish Board of Agriculture official was also planning on spending the weekend in Dublin with her daughter when her work commitments wrapped up but she was left in agony after waking up to 77 large red bites on her face and arms.

Sanja told the Irish Sun: I picked the hotel because it had a great reputation.

I never expected that something like this was going to happen.

I have big marks on my face, my neck and my arms.

I tried to show the managers and they were just like No, no.

I travel a lot and Ive never had an experience like this.

Sanja booked the hotel for two nights and checked in on October 30 and stayed until November 1.

She was forced to spend 70 on a visit to the doctor and a further 30 on steroid tablets and cream.

Sanja, who left Dublin last month, said she had to work from home as she had large marks on her face.

She said: The hotel was aware of what the problem was because there wasnt a small infestation.

"I had 77 bites on me. I dont know how many bed bugs there were in total but I saw several. I brought the manager up to the room to show him.

Sanja claimed the manager told her it looked like something but wasnt sure because he wasnt a specialist.

A spokeswoman for Riu Plaza The Gresham said: Please let us assure you that the health and safety of our clients is our number one priority.

We know of the case you refer to and please let us say that we take this matter very seriously.

After the first notification, the hotel contacted its specialised partner and the result of the analysis conducted was negative.

No bed bugs were found in the hotel. In any case, and as a gesture of goodwill, the belongings of the guest were treated via our cleaning partner and the luggage replaced.

The Irish Sun then sent the hotel a video of a bed bug which Sanja filmed and requested a copy of the report from the pest company.

A spokeswoman then told us: Im sorry but we cannot share the report from the pest company, opinate about the video, nor give you further details.

But we can tell you that we have had no other reports of this kind from any other guest staying either in this very bedroom nor in any of the other 339 guestrooms during these dates.

Despite this, if there is the minimum suspicion, we activate the specific protocol to avoid any possible problem from spreading.

How to Know if You Have Bed Bug Bites – TripSavvy

Bed Bug Bites

Bed bugs are a traveler's nightmare. They can be picked up in hotel rooms, leaving red itchy bumps and possibly rashes to ruin your vacation. Or even worse: If you accidentally bring them back with you, they could infect your whole house. To prevent a plague of bed bugs, here are some tips on what to check while you're on the road and how to determine the symptoms of bed bug bites.

Toavoid getting bed bugs while traveling, make sure to inspect the mattress and sheets on the hotel beds, especially near the seams, mattress tags, and box spring. If you see any rust stains, dark spots, or pale yellow patches, this could be a sign of bed bugs. Also, never put your suitcase on the bed itself or you couldbring them homeafter your vacation. Most hotels provide a luggage rack, which is much wiser to use.

Bed bug bites typically appear in groups of three, called the "breakfast, lunch, and dinner" pattern. Each victim's reaction to bed bug bites is unique. Some may have a slight reddening of the skin. Others may have a more severe reaction, causing a raised, itchy rash. A raised rash may obscure the individual bites, making it challenging to identify. Sometimes, bites and lesions can throb and become very painful for days after the bugs bit you.

As a precaution, you can steam, vacuum, and spray rubbing alcohol all over your mattress and box springs. It's also recommended to steam, wash, and dry all the bed linens using hot water and bleach. To clean out your suitcase, spray rubbing alcohol over the luggage, both inside and out. Then, finish the job by vacuumed your bedroom thoroughly.

If you believe that you found traces of bed bugs, immediately cover the mattresses and box springs with plastic mattress covers. In worst case scenarios, you'll need to hire an exterminator to come inspect your home.

If you got bit by bed bugs, use ice packs to relieve the swelling and itchiness. Go to the doctor if symptoms persist. They will usually prescribe you a dose of antihistamines and antibiotics. Additionally, they may instruct you to bathe multiple times a day and apply a special cream to the rash.

Should I Use an Anti Bed Bug Lotion to Fend Off Those …

Bed bugs, unlike fleas, lice, and other nuisance insects, are attracted to open skin. And even when their bites leave not marks (which often is the case), you will wake up itchy, itchy, itchy on the very spot they bit you.

Besides taking measures to kill off the beg bug population that is booming in and around your mattress, you may also wish to look into using an anti bed bug lotion. It wont solve your problem by itself, but it can ward off at least some of those vampires of the mattress and help you get a good nights sleep (for once!).

There are a number of possible anti bed bug creams and lotions to choose from that will give you some relief. Read on to find out more about them.

If you read the online reviews, or talk to people whove tried it in person off line too, youll find theyre quite mixed on anti bed bug lotions. Partly, thats because there are different lotions (some more/less effective), and partly, because there are different bed bugs (some more/less immune to particular lotions.)

Click on the relevant links for more information on bed bug repellent, bed bug powder, or bed bug strips.

In general, understand that there are lotions out there that are quite effective at killing bed bug bite itch, and some that will at least minimize the chances of getting more bites or of getting large numbers of bites in a single night.

Soap and Water As LotionThe most basic lotion you can use isnt a lotion at all. Its just plain soap. Take a bar of soap, wet it, and rub it till you create a thick lather on your hands. Then smear that soapy lather over your bed bug bites. Rub it in hard, and dont rinse it off: just let it dry where it is. That will give some anti-itch relief, believe it or not.

Read on to learn about specific bed bug lotions and how they can be an effective tool in your ongoing war against bed bugs.

There are as many chemicals and substances unpleasant to bed bugs as there are unpleasant to people, so it isnt surprising that a host of anti bed bug lotions exist. Some of these are natural, some are re-purposed household products, and others you may need to buy just for the occasion.

Never scratch bed bug bites or risk making things worse!

We should also mention that simply rubbing an ice cube on the bite will numb that unpleasant sensation, and that you can take oral antihistamines or pain relievers to help as well.

But if you want to know about calamine lotion and topical medications, read the next two sections.

You may, perhaps, have had your complaints about calamine lotion in the past, but then again, you probably never used it as an anti bed bug lotion.

Mosquito Repellent Wont WorkAll studies and experts seem to agree that mosquito repellent wont repel bed bugs. Bed bugs are a bit more determined to suck your blood than are mosquitoes, it seems, and will crawl up and sit right in the repellent while biting as usual.

Medicated topically applied creams are not going to keep the bed bugs from biting. But they will definitely help get rid of the itch.

A steroidal anti-itch cream, bought over the counter, can do very nicely. Look for something with hydrocortisone or cortisone as an active ingredient.

Anti bed bug skin lotions can reduce bed bug bites.

With a doctors prescription, you could get even more powerful relief, from a heftier cortico-steroidal cream. And if itching and swelling is bad and continues for a week or two, better see your doctor.

Some medications to consider buying include:

What are the top three anti bed bug lotions?

Thats a very opinionated matter, of necessity, but well go out on the proverbial limb and recommend these three:

If you are just going to use one anti bed bug bite lotion, we would again site our top pick: calamine lotion.

But, the real story is that you are going to have to experiment a little to see which anti bed bug cream or lotion or homemade solution works best for you.

But we cant say that just putting some cream on at night will kill all the bed bugs that have been bothering you or that it will 100% for sure prevent all new bites. The effectiveness on stopping the itch is much more solid, though.

Combine calamine lotion for prevention with a hydrocortisone cream for existing bites and any few new ones that the calamine doesnt stop, and we feel thats about the best approach you can take. But a hundred other specific strategies could be cobbled together as well, and who knows if one of those would work best for any particular bed bug beguiled individual?
