Welcome to the TORONTO TRAVEL FORUM.

Indeed Bed Bugs... once thought of as being a "cleanliness" of a Hotel indicator... truly are not. As stated even the classiest Hotels in the world have probably had a run-in with Bed-Bugs.

Bed-Bugs are truly a "human" issue... they travel from place to place because they hitch a ride with the next Traveller.

The only real things that will kill off a Bed Bug Infestation is an extreme change in temperature... so HOT or COLD

To keep yourself safe... you should of course inspect a Hotel Room prior to actually sleeping in it... and

(a) Not put your suitcases on the bed or floor... use the luggage stands... this goes for when you are home as well !!

(b) When you get home... DON'T bring your luggage into the house... but rather unpack (say in the garage) and move your clothes directly into the washing machine... a good rule of thumb is to ALWAYS wash everything when you get home... this will certainly cut down on the possibility of any of the little critters making their way into your house / life.

(c) Items that cannot go in a HOT Wash should be put into the Dryer on a HOT Setting, or bagged up into Ziplock Bags and tossed into the Freezer.

What are bedbugs? Bedbugs are small, elusive insects that belong to the insect family Cimicidae. They feed on the blood of warm blooded animals including humans. Cimex lectularius are commonly called Bedbugs because they are mainly active at night between 2am and 5am.

Bedbugs are a growing source of aggravation, particularly in the developed Western world, because bedbugs were by and large wiped out in the late 1950s with the widespread use of DDT. Prior to 1995, most people under 50 years of age had never seen a bedbug. Bedbugs have since begun making a major comeback worldwide.

What Do Bedbugs Look Like? Adult bed bugs reach 5-8mm in length, while nymphs are as small as 1.5mm. Bedbugs have flat bodies, are wingless, and are sometimes mistaken for ticks or small cockroaches. Bedbugs feed by sucking blood from humans or animals. Adult bedbugs are reddish brown in color while nymphs are clear in color but appear bright red after feeding. Newly hatched nymphs are translucent, and as the bedbugs grow moult, they become a deeper brown.

Symptoms of Bedbug Bites: Bedbugs bite and suck blood from humans. Bedbugs are most active at night and bite any exposed areas of skin while an individual is sleeping. The face, neck, hands, and arms are common sites for bed bug bites. The bite itself is painless and is not noticed. Small, flat, or raised bumps on the skin are the most common sign; redness, swelling, and itching commonly occur. If scratched, the bite areas can become infected. A peculiarity of bedbug bites is the tendency to find several bites lined up in a row. Infectious disease specialists refer to this as the breakfast, lunch, and dinner sign signifying the sequential feeding that occurs from site to site.

History of Bedbugs: Bedbugs were common in the U.S. before World War II and became rare after widespread use of the pesticide DDT began in the 1940s and 1950s. They remained prevalent in other areas of the world and, in recent years, have been increasingly observed again in the U.S. Increases in immigration and travel from the developing world as well as restrictions on the use of stronger pesticides may be factors that have led to the relatively recent increase in bed bug infestations. Bedbugs have been resurgent in the past decade and are nearing epidemic proportions.

Where are bedbugs found? While bed bugs are often reported to be found when sanitation conditions are poor or when birds or mammals (particularly bats) are nesting on or near a home, bed bugs can also live and thrive in clean environments. Crowded living quarters also facilitate the spread of bed bugs.

Bed bugs can live in any area of the home and can reside in tiny cracks in furniture as well as on textiles and upholstered furniture. They tend to be most common in areas where people sleep and generally concentrate in beds, including mattresses, box springs, and bed frames. Other sites where bed bugs often reside include curtains, the corners inside dressers and other furniture, cracks in wallpaper (particularly near the bed), and inside the spaces of wicker furniture. As bedbugs can live for months without feeding, they can also be found in vacant homes.

Methods for Killing Bedbugs:

Bedbugs are very difficult to kill because of two main factors: (1) their natural resilience and (2) their resistance to contemporary domestic chemical pesticides.

Their resilience is largely due to a waxy coating on their bodies which protects them from surface pesticides and the chemical tolerance bedbugs developed during the 1940s and 1950s to chemical pesticides during the widespread spraying of DDT.

I used this company because they had a warranty. I found them online. The other pest control places did not give a warranty and would only say that they would charge separately for each treatment. Cary Title the owner of Bed Bugs and Beyond asserted that the up front cost would include every treatment until they got the job done. I was skeptical but the company is as good as their warranty. It took five treatments. They not only got rid of the bugs finally but after the initial cost they didnt charge me a thing. And I still have a warranty until the end of October. I know that if the bugs come back or I have a resurgence that I can rely on Bed Bugs and Beyond to come back without any more cost to fix to the problem. They crew is efficient, polite and reliable. A great service and company. I have already recommended this company to other people and property management companies. If you have bed bugs you should use this company to get rid of them.

Theres a lot of competition in the Toronto bed bug control market. Bed Bugs and Beyond doesnt take advantage of the hot market. They keep prices fairly low in comparison to other companies offering heat, and offer a 90-day guarantee and a free heat treatment if the bugs do return.

So far, weve been bed-bug free since the initial heat treatment!

Our experience with Bed Bugs & Beyond was great. The owner, Cary, came and did a free inspection on the same day we contacted him even though he had another job in progress elsewhere. The crew who did the treatment was just as compassionate as Cary. They patiently explained the process and helped us and our two cats get out the door bed-bug free so we wouldnt bring them back with us. This involved blowing hot air on us, our bags, and cat carriers as well as inside my car.

Cary did warn us during the inspection that our Ikea furniture would sustain some damage. Indeed, the cheap melamine finishes separated from our dressers. We have been able to super-glue them back down. Our large and expensive Pax wardrobe came through it just fine, though! The only damage to our electronics was to our laser printer, which weve replaced a cost well worth the experience of a good nights sleep

If youve got bed bugs, dont waste your money on steam and vacuum treatments (these things you can do yourself!) and be aware of the fact that chemical fumigation cannot penetrate the nooks and crannies in your walls where these sneaky bugs hang out. Heat is the best way.

I do recommend cleaning up any of the Diatomaceous Earth powder before heat treatment if youve spread it around. The heat fans will blow it around everywhere. Weeks later and Im still cleaning it up!

I also recommend boarding your pets somewhere overnight. Our indoor cats really suffered in the hot house even hours after the treatment. Your house will take 5+ hours to cool off because the walls and floors retain so much heat.

A big thanks to Cary and the Bed Bugs and Beyond crew! Although youre all wonderful people, I hope that I never have to contact you again
